SOLAS requires a Cargo Securing Manual (CS Manual) for all types of ships engaged in the carriage of cargoes other than solid and liquid bulk cargoes..

Having an approved CS Manual is a statutory requirement, which a class society can approve on behalf of the flag authorities

The minimum standard of lashings given in the CSM must be followed. The Master may insist on further lashings in view of circumstances.

The CSM also contains a list of the type and number of portable lashing gear on board.

This list must be maintained up to date. The dates of repair, receipt and landing of lashing gear must be entered.
