Saturday 24 March saw 25 women, mostly young mothers, enjoy a special day at the Wheatland Motel. There were stalls for the ladies to browse, along with tickets in the Dalwallinu Playgroup raffle to purchase, but the most important part of the day was the opportunity to network, with one attendee saying “it was like a girl’s birthday party for mums”.
After the 3-course sit down lunch it was time for some fun, smashing the pink flamingo piñata, listening to music and of course, more networking. “Such a great way to meet new women”, another lady said, “excellent food, fantastic music”.
This is the second time the Wheatland has held this event, but Tessa is planning on holding another later this year, either after football has finished, or on a bye weekend. Keep an eye out for info on the next ‘Ladies who Lunch’ event!
Last Thursday Dalwallinu Early learning Centre farewelled its Centre’s Manager and long term staff member Tiana Morgan. Current and many former children attended the lunchtime party to say their goodbyes. Tiana has looked after many of the now school aged children in Dalwallinu.
Tiana first started with the centre when she was in year 12 at Dalwallinu District High
School as part of her traineeship.
Tiana has looked after and cared for many of the children in town and she will be dearly missed by the children and community. Tiana is relocating to Sydney with her Partner where she will continue to work in childcare.

If the President of the United States, the Queen of England or the Prime Minister of Canada would call you by your name, everyone would quickly realise that you were personal friends. Somehow great meaning is connected with being on a first-name basis with someone who is great.
When the Saviour first came into the world, the angel announced that His name was to be “Jesus,” because He was to save His people from their sins. When we accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour, we were most certainly put on a first-name basis with Him.
But perhaps just as important, He is also on a first-name basis with us. He knows every action, every move and every thought we have. Someday, when we stand before Him face to face, we will certainly thank and praise Him for His wonderous grace. But more than this, we will stand before Him either pleased or ashamed for the way we served Him, the One who came to be the Saviour of the world.
While some people take His name in vain, we who know Him personally can say, “Jesus is the sweetest name i know.”

Good Friday’s Storm which lashed through various parts of the Wheatbelt was certainly felt in Kalannie.
The local Sports Club had its roof blown off !
Easter Saturday saw many families enjoy another day of “Fun in the Park” organised by the Dalwallinu Baptist Church.
There were lots of fun activities to choose from such as, Bouncy castles, face painting, obstacle courses and craft tables. The Lions also held their famous sausage sizzle. Keep an eye out for anther “Fun in the
Park Day”.

Ground-breaking of Northam Solar Farm project
Work gets underway on the Northam Solar Farm project 30 local jobs to be created during construction Project expected to be operational by October 2018 Energy Minister Ben Wyatt has today attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the State's newest solar farm at Northam.
The Northam Solar Farm project will be developed by Carnegie Clean Energy in partnership with Indigenous Business Australia and Bookitja Ptd Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Perth Noongar Foundation.
This partnership will provide important contracting opportunities to a number of Aboriginal businesses, as well as the opportunity for ongoing Noongar employment during both the construction and operation phases of this project.
The 10-megawatt project is expected to generate enough power for 3,000 households over the next 25 years.
Comments attributed to Energy Minister Ben Wyatt: "Projects such as the Northam Solar Farm illustrate the great potential we have in Western Australia to take advantage of the technological advances in the energy sector. We can create regional opportunities built around cleaner, cheaper renewable power.
"This project is particularly exciting because of the opportunities it will provide to local Aboriginal people and businesses as a result of the joint venture."

Living on the edge (of the clearing line) At the end of the ‘clearing line’ – the boundary between the extensive remaining native vegetation of the inland rangelands and the more extensively-cleared agricultural zone – and sharing a boundary with Lake Moore, Bininninga Farms is a broadacre farm full of life.
Grant and Stacey Hudson have been farming at Bininninga Farms, near Kalannie, since 1997, where they recently fenced-off more than 300 hectares of remnant vegetation along the edge of the salt lake system.
Wildlife abounds on the property, with numerous bird species, reptiles, and native mammals often seen. The often elusive Malleefowl is also present on the farm, with the nearby Goodlands Nature Reserve providing additional habitat for the birds to forage and breed. Unfortunately there is also an ever present
threat of feral predators – especially foxes and feral cats – in the area.
While Grant has seen relatively few foxes in the area during the past eight years, he has noticed an increase in the number of feral cats – with many seen around the homestead, especially during harvest.
“Feral dogs are also an issue,” he said. “But trapping and baiting has seen their numbers controlled.
“Emus can also be nuisance, especially when they get into the crops, but as long as they stay in the bushland, we are happy to share the landscape with them.”
The Hudson Family also supply local Kalannie business Kochii Eucalyptus Oil with material for their oils. Kochii Eucalyptus Oil is produced exclusively from plantations of Eucalyptus kochii, grown in the Central Wheatbelt area of WA – and only Eucalyptus kochii trees that have been planted are harvested for oil production.
NACC Biodiversity Coordinator Jessica Stingemore visited the property recently to inspect the completed fencing. She said that while they were often overlooked due to not being arable farming land, salt lakes and other naturally saline systems were still valuable features of our landscape.
“Although they may appear barren, many are actually rich ecosystems which incorporate unique flora species and provide specialised habitat for animals including reptiles, mammals, birds, and invertebrates.”

How to make a complaint Consumer Protection regularly reminds consumers in Western Australia about their rights and the regulations in place to protect them, but what happens when you actually need to make a formal complaint about a retailer or business? The first step in the process is always to approach the trader and attempt to get a remedy for the issue. We have a handy checklist on our website to guide you through the process at www.consumerprotection.wa.gov.au, or you can call us for advice on 1300 304 054. If you have not been able to resolve the issue with a trader, then you can lodge a formal complaint with Consumer Protection and we may then attempt to conciliate the matter for you. This means that we will talk to the trader on your behalf to find an outcome that is acceptable to all parties. This is a free service and conciliation is often the most efficient and effective way to handle complaints. Most complaints received by the department are resolved in this manner. When Consumer Protection receives a formal complaint, we will look at it to decide:
what the dispute is about and options for helping to resolve the issue; if there is any applicable law that may have been broken; and whether the matter would be better handled by another organisation – in this case
the department will refer you to the most appropriate organisation. Consumer Protection will contact each person involved in the dispute to try to find a satisfactory resolution. While the aim is to resolve most complaints within 30 days, this isn’t always possible if the issue is complicated or there is a lack of co-operation. Consumer Protection cannot order or direct anyone to resolve the complaint, only a court or a tribunal can do that. If a mutual agreement is not possible then you will be told about other options that may help, for example applications via the Magistrates Court, tribunals such as the State Administrative Tribunal, or other government departments, or independent legal advice. More action will also be considered if it is necessary to protect other consumers or address market misconduct. This may not help to resolve your particular dispute, but it will help to prevent future problems for you and for other consumers. We also take proactive steps to ensure traders are doing the right thing. For example, our Trader Engagement Program works with selected traders to ensure they are aware of their obligations under the Australian Consumer Law. We analyse records of enquiries and complaints received from consumers to determine which businesses could benefit from the program. The program aims to encourage those traders to change their behaviour by identifying conduct that causes, or has the potential to cause, consumer detriment or dissatisfaction and we work with them to ensure future compliance with legislation. The newest strain of rabbit calicivirus to Australia, known as the Korean variant (RHDV1 K5), is set to be released across the Wheatbelt again this autumn in an effort to control pest rabbit numbers. RHDV1 and its associated strains affect both wild and domestic European rabbits. The disease is acute and highly contagious with no cure. Therefore it is vital that all pet rabbits are immunised against RHDV1 with the Cylap® vaccine prior to the release. The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) recommends vaccinating rabbits against RHDV1 as follows:
Kittens: 4, 8, 12 weeks of age, then 6 monthly for life
Adults: 2 vaccinations 1 month apart, then 6 monthly for life
Contact your local veterinarian for advice on vaccination
In addition to vaccination, the following precautions may assist in minimising the risk of infection:
If possible, keep pet rabbit indoors, at least until they can be vaccinated and your vet advises it is now safe for them to be outside.
Prevent direct and indirect contact between domestic and wild rabbits. Rabbit-proof backyards to prevent access by pest rabbits.
Regularly decontaminate hutches, bowls etc. with either 10% bleach or 10% sodium hydroxide.
Limit contact between and handling of unfamiliar pet rabbits.
Avoid cutting grass and feeding it to pet rabbits if there is the risk of contamination from wild rabbits.
Decontaminate hands, shoes and clothing after handling rabbits other than your own.
Good insect control (especially for fleas and flies) is vitally important. Insect control should include insect proofing the hutch or keeping the rabbits indoors.
Remove uneaten food on a daily basis.
Infected rabbits should be isolated and any dead rabbits should be disposed of in a manner than will minimise environmental contamination. Contact your local vet for more information.

Year 5&6 students visited Parliament House as part of their school camp. The tour leader told the students that they were a credit to themselves, their teachers, their parents and their school.

I am seeking information and photos of a migration camp that was located just North of Dalwallinu. North of he Caltex Depot, and I think the present stock yards are located there.
The camp operated between 1950 and 1954. It consisted of a kitchen lean-to, one room timber frame house and tents for the children. About 15 families lived in this camp and most of them worked for the railways as labourers.
My family were refugees from Germany. There were refugees from Germany, Russia, Lithuania, Poland and Yugoslavia.
We lived in Dalwallinu for 10 years and my parents only moved to Perth to allow their children an high school education.

Speak Easy No adult should require someone else to manage their feelings for them. We all know those people who make life miserable for anyone they get close to. The poor things usually have miserable lives themselves, but it can be hard to feel sorry for them when it’s so obvious they are the ones causing the problems in their own lives. They can’t see that, though. For them, it feels like everyone else is to blame. Deep down, they sometimes wonder if they are the one with the problem, but because their behaviour is constantly triggered by others, it makes sense to them that if other people just wouldn’t trigger them, they’d behave nicely all the time. They’re right, in a way. They really are nice people. But they have no way of calming themselves down when they are upset, so if other people didn’t upset them, they’d be fine. Of course, life doesn’t work like that, and it really isn’t anyone else’s job to walk on eggshells trying to not trigger other adults. We are all responsible for managing ourselves. So these people actually have two clear problems. One, they can’t soothe themselves when they are upset. Two (and this is the worst part), they believe they have a RIGHT to have other people do it for them. That combination of emotional dysregulation and entitlement is a disastrous, toxic tangle for any adult over the age of 3. And God help anyone they are in a relationship with. This is how it starts: The person somehow missed out on learning how to self-soothe in the first place. Maybe this was because they grew up with adults who didn’t know how to either. Mum or Dad would have a meltdown when things went wrong, and the child didn’t ever get to watch and learn how to manage themselves. Worse, while Mum or Dad were having a meltdown, the child probably got in the firing line, upsetting the child directly. So that child grows up with two problems: 1) no example of how to calm themselves down, and 2) a feeling of upset already inside them from being on the receiving end of someone else’s moods. The third problem they grow up with is the lesson that you are allowed to take your feelings out on someone else. They grew up thinking that adults have that right. And from what I’ve seen in all the adults I’ve talked to like this, it was their Dad that was the one who couldn’t handle emotions and acted like they had the right to have other people tiptoeing around them.
It’s not always the case. But it’s a very common pattern. A lot of people had a Mum who couldn’t handle being upset, but it doesn’t usually seem to leave the same sense of entitlement in the kids as when the Dad does it. So, if your Dad had trouble managing himself when he was upset, or if he took out his moods on you, or your Mum or your siblings, then you’re doing really well if you haven’t followed in his footsteps. That’s an extremely hard family pattern to break. Kids who grow up with this family dynamic can end up feeling crazy, because the parent’s logic is actually crazy. It goes like this in their heads:
“I can’t regulate my emotions so you MUST behave in a way that makes me feel calmer” “If you don’t behave the way I want you to, I have no choice but to be upset.” “Since I have no choice, it must be your fault I am upset. You are upsetting me.” “If you don’t change your behaviour, then you are upsetting me on purpose. I therefore have the right to punish you.” “If I go too far with my punishment, I may feel bad, but really, it’s partly your fault.” “I will maybe apologise for part of the problem, but you must accept responsibility too.”
No. You don’t. None of their upset, and certainly none of their behaviour, is your responsibility. Any upset adult has 100% responsibility for making themselves feel better. If they are having trouble trusting you, that is their problem. If they have trouble feeling happy at work, it’s their problem. If they feel stressed when the kids mess up the house, or when their dinner isn’t the way they like it, or if they can’t get what they want, or if people disrespect them, or any of the things that adults get upset about, it is their problem to calm themselves down and find a solution, without bullying anyone or sulking. And a lot of adults out there, especially ones who had a skill-less, entitled father, don’t have those skills. If you weren’t given self-soothing skills as a child, you must start with yourself. Never think that someone else should make this easier for you. That thought will keep you trapped. It’s that time of the year again when the Winter sports are starting and the Pool season comes to an end. It’s been another busy season at the pool considering the Summer we have had and I would like thank all user’s of the pool for making my job enjoyable.
Great to have laughs and chats with people from all different backgrounds. This season I ran the Swim To Rotto program for the 6th season and again had big numbers being involved. The program is all about being active, and what better place to do this in Summer than in the water. Some may beg to differ on this! Especially the early morning swimmers. But the thermometer doesn’t lie!! 26 on most mornings. The distance from Cottesloe to Rotto is 768 Laps or just over 19km. This season saw 113 people add to the tally from 7yr old through to 80+ so this is great to see so many people trying to stay active and healthy.
Over the past 5 seasons I have been tallying up the total km swum as a town with the challenge to swim all the way around Australia. To start us off we headed East and reached Melbourne give or take a few km after the second season. From there we headed North up the East coast as far as Cape York after the 4th season. 5th season saw us as far as Daly Waters and now with the 6th season done we have headed into Darwin then back out and down as far as Derby. This season saw a total of 95561 laps swum as a town which is the equivalent of 2389km. Another huge effort from everyone.
The table shows a list of swimmers and laps done. Big congratulations to Christie Andrews who topped the list with over 10,000 laps for the season, great effort for someone who’s not competitive ? Hopefully will see you all back next season and the rain can come anytime now. Good luck for the season ahead.

Cookery Corner
Ingredients: 1 teaspoon stock powder or paste 1 teaspoon curry powder 1 cup raw cous cous 1 cup (250mL) of boiling water 425g can chickpeas
1 large tomato Small bunch parsley 1 spring onion Rind of 1 orange 100ml orange juice
Butter Chicken - Serves 6
Couscous Salad - Serves 6 Method: 1. Measure out and combine stock, curry powder ad couscous in a bowl. 2. Add the boiling water. 3. Stir quickly, cover with lid and leave covered for 5 minutes. 4. Wash vegetables. Chop tomato and spring onion into small pieces. 5. Finely chop parsley leaves, throw out stems. 6. Grate the orange rind, avoiding the white pith. 7. Cut orange in half. Press and twist onto juicer to remove juice. Measure out 100ml juice. 8. Add rind to juice, then stir. 9. Drain and rinse chickpeas. 10. Fluff up couscous with a fork. 11. Add tomato, spring onions, parsley and chickpeas to couscous and stir. Mix in orange dressing, then serve.
These recipes are part of the Food Sensation course, currently running at the Dalwallinu CRC. The last class is next Monday at 11.00am.
Ingredients: 800g skinless chicken breasts Cooking spray oil 1 medium sized onion, chopped 1 teaspoon crushed garlic ½ teaspoon crushed ginger 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon dried coriander 2 teaspoons paprika ½ teaspoon cumin ⅛ teaspoon chilli powder (optional) 2 teaspoons chicken stock powder 4 tablespoons (no added salt) tomato paste 1 tablespoon cornflour 375mL can evaporated light milk
Note: You can replace chicken with rump steak, pork or 600g tofu. Method: 1. Cut chicken into bite-size pieces. 2. Coat a large non-stick frypan with cooking spray. 3. Sauté chicken, onion, garlic and ginger until chicken pieces are nearly cooked. 4. Add all the spices and stock powder and stir to combine for one minute. 5. Add tomato paste and stir through chicken. 6. Blend cornflour with milk then add to pan, stirring continuously mixing well until boiled. 7. Serve with cooked rice and a green salad or vegetables.
