registration for the Session 1938-39 was ' presented ,
copies being circulated to members of the Senate . Th e
total number of students enrolled as at October 7th ,
1938, was 2275 .

For the information of Senate the following repor t
was read setting forth the action taken at a meeting o f
Heads of Departments, called by the President, aad hel d
on September 9th, to study the question of adjustmen t
of time-table made necessary by increased enrolment, -
1. That there be four periods in the morning ,8 :30 to 12 :30 .
2. That the noon period be one hour, 12 :30 t o1 :30, in which absolutely no lectures no rlaboratories shall be held .
3. That there be four afternoon periods, 1 :30 t o5 :30, and no lectures nor laboratories (excep textra-sessional classes) be held after 5 :30 .
4. That in the first instance the present thre emorning periods be moved back (i .e ., earlier )one half hour, and that the Chairmen of th eTime-Table Committees be authorized to mak enecessary adjustments having in mind con-flicts and accommodation .
A letter from the President was read announcing tha t
Dr . W . Ivor Jennings, visiting professor in the Depart-
ment of Economics, Political Science, Commerce and Socio-
logy, would be the speaker for the Autumn Congregation .

announcing that the Board of Governors, at a meetin g
held on September 7th, 1938, had passed a resolutio n
that limitation be not enforced for the Academic Yea r
1938-39 . Limitation would still stand in the Teache r
Training Course and in Second Year Nursing, but not i n
First Year Arts and Science and Agriculture or Secon d
Year Applied Science .
At a meeting on September 26th, 1938, the Boar d
of Governor's passed a resolution that limitation i n
Second Year Nursing and Health be raised from 20 to 25 .
The communication was received for the informatio n
of Senate .

Matriculation Scholarship s
The recommendations of the Senate respecting th e
resolving of the tie between Robert Mack Lane and Joh n
Malcolm Russell Margeson, and the awarding of a specia l
scholarship to Albert Desmond Turner, Senior Matric-
ulant, had been approved by the Board of Governors on
August 29th, 1938 .
Re-organization of the Committees on Physica lEducation and on the Management of the Gymnasiu m
A communication from the Board of Governors wa s
received, together with a copy of letters from Dr . G . M .
Shrum relative to a proposed re-organization of th e
Committees on Physical Education, and on the Management
of the Gymnasium . The Board had agreed that thi s
matter be referred to the Faculty Council .

A list of the Autumn Awards of Prizes, Scholarship s
and Bursaries made by the Chairman of Senate on th e
recommendation of the Joint Faculty Committee in con-
formity with the resolution of Senate of December 18th ,
1929, was submitted for the information of Senate .

and Scholarships in reference to the award of Specia l
Bursaries was received for the information of Senate .
The Committee had found itself faced with tota l
requests amounting to $16,128 .00 with only $7,175 .0 0
available . The strictest scrutiny of every case an d
the greatest economy in allotment of money had, there -
fore, been necessary . The attention of Senate was drawn
to the high academic standing of the greater proportio n
of applicants for aid .
The Chairman expressed great appreciation for th e
painstaking and thorough way in which the Committee had
dealt with the distribution of the bursaries .
It was pointed out that the work of the Committe e
involved a personal interview with every one of th e
candidates .
A letter from Dr . D . O . Evans, Head of the Depart-
ment of Modern Languages, was received, announcing tha t
the French Consul for Western Canada had succeeded i n
obtaining for the University the award of a second
French Government Scholarship for this year, and statin g
that the award had been made to Mr . A . E . Carter . Th e
award of two scholarships to The University of British
Columbia in a single year by the French Governmen t
constituted a precedent .

The course of study for General Science V of th e
High School curriculum was presented, and the question
of the acceptance of this course for students enterin g
the Faculty of Arts and Science and not intending to do
major work in a science in the University or to ente r
the Faculty of Agriculture or the Faculty of Applie d
Science, was considered .
Attention was called to the fact that the revised
courses in Physics and Chemistry for Grade %II had no t
yet been drawn up but would probably be ready in th e
near future .
The following recommendation was presented by th e
Faculties, -
"That we approve, without prejudice, th eprogramme for General Science V for th eyear 1938-39, but that the whole ques-tion of the content of this course b etaken under revision when the special
