GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE My Brother Knights and Members of the EDW Community, In our Holy Catholic Church the month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. St Francis de Sales tells us “the rosary is the finest of all prayers.” Scripture tells us that Mary, at various times, pondered and treasured things in her heart. I read a book in which the author says that these acts by Mary are similar to what we do when we reflect on the various mysteries of the rosary. PGK Kenny Goss Jr. leads our council in praying the rosary each Sunday at 12:30PM. We meet in the council home and then decide if we want to pray at the statue or inside. We always pray for the sick members of our council and family members. We also always pray for our deceased brothers. Our council was honored by a visit from Immediate Past State Deputy Tom Harger at our September 5, 2013 meet- ing. Tom presented us with our “Contest of Champions” trophy for membership gains in the 2012-2013 fraternal year. Congratulations to EDW, especially Greg Strizek, Membership Chair! I also would like to thank Deputy Grand Knight John White for another successful season of Biergartens for the benefit of KOVAR. We collected over $500.00 on Labor Day. That brought the total to over $5,000.00 donated to KOVAR in the 8 times we have done this. Thanks also to our very own Favio Garcia, owner/brewer at Lost Rhino brewery in Ashburn, VA. Favio is an EDW member and great supporter of the Biergarten. Look for Lost Rhino at various beverage stores in the area. Ask for their “Face Plant” IPA!! My last point is a reflection using the bully pulpit of the Grand Knight. I am saddened and disappointed by the rancor I see among certain parts of our membership. Saddened and disappointed because I have spoken with many members on topics of concern and, to a man, each of them cares deeply for EDW and the Columbus Club and wants what is best for each. Obviously there are differing views on what is best and how to achieve but lets’ talk and listen to each other. My brother knights let us remember what unites us, Char- ity, Unity and Fraternity. Have a great month. Vivat Jesus! Pray the rosary! Stephen McTeague Grand Knight THANKSGIVING 2013 This year we celebrate Thanksgiving on November 28. Our annual charity event tradition continues this year. Thom and Marijo Galvin will team up with David, Shannon Nassar and family to make the event even better. Please mark your calendars. As in years past we will be look- ing for volunteers the night before and the day of the event. We also need people to volunteer to cook unstuffed 20 lb. turkeys. Those can be dropped off in the main hall the night before. Also financial donations are needed. Those can be sent to the council office to the attention of the Financial Secretary. Mark “Thanksgiving 2013” in the memo section. Thank you all very much and especially to Thom and Marijo.

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGEMy Brother Knights and Members of the EDW Community,In our Holy Catholic Church the month of October is

dedicated to the Holy Rosary.

Our council was honored by a visit from Immediate Past State Deputy Tom Harger at our September 5, 2013 meet-ing.

The End of the Year Pool Party was a great success this year thanks to all involved for their hard work and dedication. A special Thank you to Rob Hanna and his wife our resident Dee Jay who managed to keep the children and some adults occupied with various activities and dances throughout the afternoon.

The Deep End exceeded our expectations again this season, Thanks to our Deep End Manager, Thom Galvin, and his staff for a job well done.

As fall arrives we will ready the campus grounds for the spring season. Refilling and reseeding all the bare spots on the grounds caused by the constant summer foot traffic, a welcome repair. There will also be some tree trimming and plantings around the property.

Please remember to join us our annual Crab Fest October 4, Main Ballroom, Annual Car Show, October 19, Council Home Grounds, Family Breakfast Octo-ber 20, Main Ballroom and the Supper Club on October 25, Paradise Ballroom.

Keep in mind volunteers are most welcome at all our Honor Flight Luncheons, it is a great feeling to see the expressions on our WWII Veterans faces when they enter the grounds and are greeted by our flag waving members. Our next Dinner will be held October11, 5:00pm, Main Ballroom and our next luncheon, October 19, 12:00 noon, Main Ballroom.

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH I would like to recognize a third generation knight. I recognize this man for his

service and charity to the council and the club. He, when he was club VP helped lead us through some troubled times. He has donated many hours of his personal and professional time in serving the club for the benefit of all members.

The countless times he has taken time to work on our grounds or to plow after a snowstorm has not gone unnoticed. That helps make the facilities available to members and those who are using our facilities.

This man is affectionately known as “The Third”. Please join me in recogniz-ing John O’Neill III as October Knight of the Month. You might catch up with him at the council home watching a Redskins game or a fine game of pool in the Kelly Room. You might also join us at the Halloween party to see him “pimpin’“ around! Thank you brother knight for all you do!

RETIREES It has been said that “old” is good in some things: old songs, old movies, and best of all, old friends. How about some jokes that are so old some of us forget we ever heard them. We don’t usually sing or watch movies but we can supply the rest. We meet every Wednesday and Ladies Day is always the third Wednesday. And widows never pay. October 16th will be our Fall Ladies Day buffet luncheon. Stop in and see what you have been missing. October Birthdays: Dominic D’Alexander, Mick Daley, Marie Gallagher, and Nancy Rougeux. October Anniversaries: Dick and Mary Jane DeCorps, and Franklin and Eliza-beth Michels. Please pray for all of our Brothers and their families, especially our sick retirees. Mike Casey

Greetings! Summer is officially behind us and Hallow-een is just around the corner. Ladies U-Knighted met on September 5 and we are forging into fall with many fun and exciting events. LUK wants to thank all of you once again for your gracious donations and charitable support to the baby shower held to benefit “Gabriel Project” and “A Women’s Choice.” Special thanks to our Anonymous donor – your gift will go a long way to provide help to these young women.

We also would like to thank all of you who stopped by the Ladies U-Knighted table on Labor Day. We always enjoy promoting our group and chatting with all of our friends, members, families, and potential members. Congrats to Art Gamotis for winning the 50/50 raffle.

There is less than a month to go before the 10th An-nual Halloween Party. (See ad in this month’s Knight Life.) As always, LUK members, fellow Knights, and the Columbus Club are teaming up to offer you an exceptional experience. The Adults-Only party will begin at 9:00 pm on Saturday, October 26. For one night, the Old Council Home will be transformed into the house on haunted hill. MS Project will journey from Transylvania to share their music. It’s time for you to think about a fun and unique Halloween costume. You could win one of several prizes in the annual costume contest. As always, there will be plenty of weird and wonderful food, no cover charge, a cash bar, and a live band. This is an event that you do not want to miss.

Because of the cooperation, dedication, and creative talents of so many people, this party continues to be one of the more successful events year after year. For those of you that would like join in and help decorate the Old Council Home for this wild and wonderful party, please stop by the Old Council Home on Friday, Oct 25, after 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in providing food for the party or helping with the clean up on Sunday, Oct 27, please contact Jo Balsamo Wood @ [email protected], 703-263-1185. Your outstanding support is always appreciated.

Please join Ladies U-Knighted in wishing Nanette O’Neill (10/10), Nancy Rougeux (10/19) and Liz O’Connell-Edmunds (10/31) a very Happy Birthday. The next Ladies U-Knighted meeting is October 3 at 7:30.

EDW’S 54TH NEW YEAR’S EVE GAlA October - crisp, cool Fall weather! Multiple Holidays on the horizon; and little over two months until EDW’s 54th New Year’s Eve Gala! It’s really not too early to think of contacting friends, relatives, neighbors, etc. to suggest getting a group together for this special event. This festive evening kicks off with an open-bar social hour w/light hors d’oeuvres; followed by a full 3-course (sit-down) dinner (w/choice of 3 entrees; see Nov. KnightLife). Then danc-ing to the wide range of dance music & vocals offered by the 5-pc. Jim Bowie Band (from 9pm-12:30am). Your evening’s entertainment also includes: numerous door prizes; a bottle of champagne on ea. table @ 11:30pm for your New Year’s toasts; continental breakfast; and complimentary beer, wine & soda all evening (all included in ticket cost). All this for only $100. per couple ($50. single). I hope all those who attended last New Year’s Eve @ EDW (about 220) come again; bring more friends. Those who’ve not yet attended: Try it! You’ll Like It!! Any ideas, suggestions, questions? Anyone interested in helping? Call me; Bob Mus-champ, cell: 703-489-2856.

YEAR OF FAITH PIlGRIMAGE TO THE BASIlICA

State Deputy Tony Fortunato sends along his thanks to all knights who attended this year’s pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The event was marked by a noon mas on September 8, 2013. Over 500 Sir Knights (4th degree) processed down the center aisle in full regalia. In addition many other knights served as ushers. Virginia knights answered the call and stepped up in a big way. Thank you.

KIDS INSPIRE EDW, OR VICE VERSA

EDW Council takes pride in our many charitable activities conducted through the year. The auxiliary, Ladies U-Knighted, also pursues projects solely to benefit others. Good news:The children of EDW are watching and learning from our good examples. Alex Strizek and Emma Foy, both 10, prove the point. On their own, a need came to their attention. Between our usual “big holi-day picnics,” they make handicraft items. At the picnics, they set up a table and sell them. Over two summers and four picnics, all proceeds - - totaling $1,759 - - have gone to KIDS V CANCER, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting research into pediatric cancers. See www.kidsvcancer.org for more information. Well done, Emma and Alex!

THINK YOU ARE TOO OlD FOR COVERAGE? MAYBE NOT

You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need. When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older. If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. This change came in response to a question we’ve heard before: “My wife and I are almost 80, do the Knights offer anything to take care of our final expenses?” And it can also help the members who thought they were “too old” to attain our coverage. This extension of our coverage ages allows us to help mem-bers we couldn’t help before. We look forward to discussing coverage with you.
