The Mobile Library made a special appearance at Kid’s Day of Lexington held on Saturday, April 28 at Virginia Hylton Park. Over 600 people attended the event. Youth Services staff from Lexington Main Library shared stories and songs. Families learned about all the resources, programs and services available at the library and are excited about Summer Reading.

Cayce-West Columbia Branch Library hosted S.C. History: What Lies Beneath Columbia on Tuesday, April 30 with 30 attending. Burned by the Union Army in 1865, debris of the Old South Carolina State House filled its basement. A defeated and destroyed city quickly forgot about this symbol of a lost cause. No one cared about what may have been hidden in her basement. Over 150 years later, a DNA match led to the search for Columbia’s first tavern and the great flood of 2015 revealed artifacts of the 1790 tavern and its neighbor, the Old State House.
At our Lego Block Parties, children use their imagination curiosity and problem-solving skills to build different creations. Legos enhance learning with hands-on activities that promote reading and critical-thinking at all ages. Chapin Branch Library presented Lego Mania on Friday, April 12 and May 17 with 7 attending. Gilbert-Summit Branch Library presented Lego Club on Wednesday, April 10 with 3 attending. Lexington Main Library presented Lego Storybuilder’s Club on Thursday, April 4 with 39 attending and Spring Break Lego Party on Friday, April 19 with 24 attending. Swansea Branch Library presented Lego Challenge on Friday, April 26 with 13 attending.
Chapin Branch Library and the Dutch Fork Historical Society hosted author Tom Poland on Monday, April 29 with 19 attending. Participants took a trip down the back roads of South Carolina to discover the sights, places and history that inspired Poland’s newest book South Carolina Country Roads: Of Train Depots, Filling Stations & Other Vanishing Charms. A veteran journalist and Southern storyteller, Poland has been writing about the disappearing rural south for nearly four decades.

IRMO HOSTS JOB FAIRTeens came dressed to impress looking for summer jobs at Irmo Branch Library’s annual Job Fair on Thursday, April 11 with 416 attending. Over 15 businesses and job agencies participated in the event. This is a great way to reach out into the community to make partnerships.
The Friends of South Congaree-Pine Ridge Branch Library hosted its first Mother’s Day Tea Party on Saturday, May 11 with 25 attending. Participants enjoyed a lovely time — sipping tea and feasting on various sandwiches, scones, and fruit.
Swansea Branch Library presented Soap Making on Monday, May 20 with 13 attending. The DIYers had good, clean fun making soap with many different shapes and scents.
PROMOTING SUMMER READING IN SCHOOLSMay is manic — Youth Services staff from all library branches visited local schools to promote Summer Reading and encourage online registration. Throughout the entire library system, 145 programs were presented to over 19,357 students. Batesburg-Leesville Branch Library visited Batesburg/Leesville Elementary, Middle and High Schools with outreach to 645 students. Chapin and Irmo Branch Libraries visited with students in Lexington/Richland 5 School District with outreach to 3,967 students. Lexington Main Library visited White Knoll, Carolina Springs, Meadows Glen and River Bluff schools with outreach to 549 teens. They also visited Lake Murray, Pleasant Hill, Red Bank, New Providence, Carolina Springs, White Knoll, Meadow Glen, Lexington and Saxe Gatha Elementary schools with outreach to 5,967 students.
Irmo Branch Library hosted local poet and arts advocate Al Black in honor of National Poetry Month on Tuesday, April 23 with 11 attending.
Gilbert-Summit Branch Library held Legal Clinic: Family Law on Thursday, April 11 with 10 attending. Participants received free legal advice about family court and issues that can arise in family court proceedings. The program was presented in partnership with the South Carolina Bar Association.
PALMETTO SCRIBEIrmo Branch Library hosted its second annual short story writing competition this year open to 11th and 12th grade students in School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties with a grand prize of $500.
The Palmetto Scribe event was held on Saturday, April 27 with 395 attending. Participants talked with local authors and enjoyed music. The program was sponsored in partnership with the Friends of Irmo Branch Library.
Lexington Main Library presented S.C. History: Lake Murray on Tuesday, May 28 with 30 attending. Spanning 50,000 acres and over 600 miles of shoreline, Lake Murray is the focal point of our community. Participants discovered the rich history and vast recreational opportunities of Lake Murray. The program was presented in partnership with Lexington County Museum.
Preschoolers enjoyed a spectacular spring surprise at Gaston Branch Library’s Storytime on Tuesday, April 30 with 22 attending. Over the past few weeks, children observed the amazing life cycle of butterflies. After the butterflies emerged from their cocoons, it was time to release them into the wild.
Students from Batesburg-Leesville High School visited Batesburg-Leesville Branch Library on Thursday, April 11 and May 20 for a special Sensory-Friendly Storytime with 11 attending both. The program accommodates the special needs of individual students while focusing on literacy. In May, the group celebrated the high school graduation of two members. Youth Services staff gave both graduates their very own copy of Curious George On Your Way.
Because every pet deserves a loving home, the Irmo Branch Library worked in partnership with Lexington County Animal Services to host a Pet Adoption on Saturday, May 4 with 34 attending. Participants met adorable pets, learned how to best care for them and minimize problem behaviors.
MASTER GARDENERSJust in time for spring blooms, Lexington County Master Gardeners presented programs at several Lexington County Public Library branches. Chapin Branch Library held Hummingbirds Gardens on Monday, April 1 with 16 attending; Irmo Branch Library held Native Plants on Wednesday, May 22 with 55 attending; Lexington Main Library held Hellebores on Monday, April 15 with 16 attending and Hummingbird Gardens on Wednesday, May 15 with 31 attending; Pelion Branch Library held Hummingbird Gardens on Saturday, May 4 with 8 attending; South Congaree-Pine Ridge Branch Library held Gardening for the Birds on Thursday, May 30 with 5 attending.
EGGCELLENT EASTER CELEBRATIONSFor many branches, it was an Easter Egg-Stravaganza and families hopped in for fun Irmo Branch Library hosted a Job egg hunts, crafts, games, face painting and more. Chapin Branch Library’s program was held on Monday, April 8 with 135 attending and Swansea Branch Library’s program was held on Friday, April 19 with 15 attending. Lexington Main Library hosted its annual Pascua event on Saturday, April 6 with 120 attending. The holiday celebration featured bilingual stories, crafts, songs and selfies with the Easter Bunny. Presented in partnership with Lexington School District One Parenting Center.
Pelion Branch Library hosted Cook the Book: French Cuisine on Tuesday, May 11 with 10 attending. The idea is simple, choose a recipe from the same book, prepare it, gather and share.
