PageLatest News on Spanish Airports

Aena will attend Routes Europe in Aberdeen from 12 to 14 April 2015.

Our Airline Customer Relations and Airport

Marketing Team will attend the route

development event along with Tourspain and

tourist board representatives from some of

the most important regions in Spain. Please

request an extra meeting with us if you want

some information from our airports and you

don’t have one scheduled yet.

Awards, awards, awards

In the past months some of our airports have

received awards in recognition of the good

results and performance of 2014. Adolfo

Suárez Madrid-Barajas has been elected as

Best Airport in Southern Europe by Skytrax

while Barcelona-El Prat has been second. Both

of them are amongst the 10 best in the world

of their traffic categories. In addition, Adolfo

Suárez Madrid-Barajas has been awarded by

CAPA as the Best International Airport in 2014.

And last but not least, Murcia San Javier has

been recognized by the passengers as the

Best European Airport of less than 2 million

passengers according to ASQ awards that are

given by ACI (Airports Council International).

Self-bag drop trials at Aena.

Aena, in collaboration with airlines that are interested in offering their passengers this service, is currently developing a pilot project in order to evaluate different self-bag drop solutions available on the market. These systems allow passengers to introduce their luggage in the automated baggage handling system with the aid of a user-friendly machine.

The airports that are participating in the program are Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat and Alicante-Elche.

This initiative is part of the Fast Travel program developed by IATA that aims to reduce the time spent by passengers at airports.

A successful IPO

On 11th of February, Aena launched its IPO,

Europe’s biggest since 2011. It was a historical

moment and the floatation was extremely

successful. The Children’s Investment Found

(TCI) remains as the biggest single private

shareholder and is represented on Aena’s

Board.

Aena, the world’s biggest airport operator in

terms of passenger traffic, remains a publicly

owned airport operator with 51% of its share

capital in the hands of the State.

Long Haul Route: Asunción

General overview

Asunción is the capital of Paraguay and one of the oldest cities in South America. Founded in 1,537 by the Spanish explorer Juan de Salazar y Espinosa in the Colonial era, the city is historically connected to Spain and served as starting point of conquerors that seek gold and silver in Alto Peru.

It is also known as “The Mother of Cities” because some colonial expeditions departed from Asunción to found Buenos Aires and other importan cities.

Asunción is today a cozy city full of contrasts with old buildings and modern towers, neighborhood stores where you can buy handcraft products and amazing shopping centers, modest hotels and restaurants which include typical food and international cuisine. This combined with its romantic nights and entertainment makes of this city a real sense of pleasure.

According to the National Statistics Institute of Spain in 2014 there were 74,910 Paraguayan people living in Spain, mainly in Madrid (24,978), Catalonia (13,014) and Andalusia (10,618).

Potential routes.

Spain has no direct connection with Asunción since 25 years ago, however in 2014, 73,319 indirect passengers travelled from Asunción to Spain.

Madrid, with 46,665 indirect passengers and Barcelona with 15,148 indirect passengers in 2014 are the main destinatios to consider a new route to Asunción.

Airport charges frozen until 2025

The Spanish Government approved last 5th July the RD-Law 8/2014 which includes the freezing of airport charges levels until 2025 and exeption of cargo charge.

The document also defines the new regulatory framework for Spanish Airports for the next years.

Incentive Scheme for 2015

The new route would benefit from the incentive scheme valid for 2015 with discounts in the passenger and security charges. Check this information in the Price Guide 2015 by clicking here.

PagePublic Holidays in Spain

The festive stage par excellence in Seville is Spring and its calendar begins with the Semana Santa, the Holy Week, of universal fame. Already in the 16th cent the Passion of Christ was commemorated with processions carried out by different religious associations denominated Hermandades or Cofradias (brotherhoods or fraternities). Every day during the Holy Week, starting on Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) there are processional parades at late night. Beside, on Viernes Santo (Sacred Friday) at dawn eight brotherhoods take part in the processions, among them the famous Macarena and the Gran Poder.

The images go accompanied by Nazarenos, members of the different brotherhoods who march in procession, dressed with a different tunic for each fraternity covered with a pointed hood and a mask. Immediately behind the float the penitents that carry crossings go equally dressed but without any hood.

An important element in the procession is the music that can sometimes be a simple accompaniment of bugles and drums of military inspiration.

A special mention deserves the Saeta, a flamenco song interpreted without instrumental accompaniment.

On the other hand, the Holy Week has a specific gastronomy composed by the cod plates and a series of candies among which the “Torrijas” are the favorites.

After a brief interval of time, the Feria de Abril takes place. Created as a commercial fair by the middle of the 19th cent, as time went by, the festive aspects that accompanied the agricultural and cattle activities in its origin were only the ones to last. During the Feria, people get dressed with the typical suits inspired by the traditional Andalusian rural attires. The ferial enclosure is composed of

hundreds of canvas huts that settled in an ephemeral way for the days of celebration of this feast, being adorned the streets with farolillos (paper lights) of bright colours.

In the early afternoon the Paseo de Caballos (horse drawn carriages ride) takes place, and from the Domingo de Resurrección (Easter Sunday) there are bullfights in the Maestranza bullring. The music during this Feria are mostly the popular Sevillanas. The Fair is inaugurated at midnight in the so-called “Alumbrado” (“Lighting Test”), concentrating the crowds around the Portada (Gateway) an ephemeral architecture adorned with thousands of bulbs; and it is closed at the same hour six days later with a show of fireworks.

Don’t miss it!!

This is evident in many of its iconic monuments and buildings, such as the Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site), La Almoina, the Serranos and Quart Towers and the Cathedral. Its Mediterranean cuisine.A rich and varied cuisine whose key ingredient is rice prepared in a variety of ways, with paella as the signature dish. Its beaches. In Valencia, you have seven kilometres of beaches on which to find your perfect spot. Choose from city beaches, which you can get to by metro or tram, or more unspoilt beaches, such as El Saler in the Albufera Natural Park. Its lifestyle. In Valencia, thousands of people soak up the sun all year round at an outdoor bar or café, while having a few tapas and a glass of wine or cold beer. And at night… there are lots of

Its most important festivals include Las Fallas, when the city is filled with gigantic sculptures that are burned to mark the arrival of springtime. Other festivals include Maritime Holy Week, the procession of Our Lady of the Forsaken, Valencian Corpus Christi and the July Fair.

Its green spaces.Valencia converted the former bed of the River Turia, which used to run through the city, into an enormous 9 km long park. Today it is a green lung in which to walk, cycle, play sport, go to cafés, etc. Valencia also has a unique and fascinating nature area: the Albufera Natural Park. Its cutting-edge architecture.Great 21st century buildings, such as the City of Arts and Sciences designed by Santiago Calatrava, The Conference Centre by Norman Foster and the Veles e Vents building by David Chipperfield, have all helped to make Valencia a landmark of architecture and a symbol of European avant-garde.Its unique nooks and crannies.Valencia will fascinate you with its charming little spots that do not appear in guidebooks but that you will discover during your visit. The mansion houses and plazas of the Barrio del Carmen, the Plaza Redonda, the Santa Catalina Church - in whose square you will find the narrowest building in Europe - the frescos in the San Nicolás Church, the clock of the Santos Juanes Church, San Vicente’s baptismal font in the San Esteban parish church or the alligator over the door of the El Patriarca Church are just some examples of the hundreds of surprises that Valencia has in store for you.Further information: www.visitvalencia.comwww.valenciatouristcard.comValencia Cathedral, floral offering (Virgin of the Forsaken)
