The main objective of these talks (and therefore the scripts of these talks), is to stimulate thinking.

Sensible, rational and logical thinking. So, my message, think, think & think!

Be sensible, be rational and be logical.

    Please Note

    1. I have had the great privilege, (since Aug 2010), of presenting talks on the weekly Radio ProgramCulture of Islam [Every Friday 8 to 8.30 pm, Radio Sri Lanka - FM 97.4]

    2. Since these are Radio Talks, I refer to, or address the audience as listeners3. I am well aware that the audience to these talks would consist of people belonging to a variety offaiths. So as to make people of all faiths feel included, I very often use words and names that are

    common to all religions.

    4. For these reasons, I use the name GOD, as well as Abraham, Moses, Jesus etc as well as thenames Allah, Ibrahim (Alaihis Salaam), Moosa (Alaihis Salaam), Easa (Alaihis Salaam) etc

    5. Muslims by habit usually say Sallallahu Alaihiwasallam, when the name of Prophet Muhammadis mentioned, and Alaihis Salaam' when the name of a Prophet is mentioned. However, in these

series of talks I have reduced the use of these prayers & sayings to the bare minimum.

    6. Muslims, also by habit, use a number of Arabic prayers or sayings, such as Alhamdulillah, InshaAllah and so on. Again, I have reduced the use of these prayers or sayings to the bare minimum.

    7. Sometimes I have to write Arabic words in the English script.I have devised my own way of writing Arabic in English, as follows;th s DHL H Gh

    95. Evidence of GOD Part 1

    Dear Friends,

    Assalamu Alaikum,

Alhamdulillah, tonights topic is one that would interest not only Muslims, but people of allFaiths. Insha Allah, I hope that through this talk, I would have provided all you listeners with

some arguments as well as some pointers to evidence to the presence of GOD. The God who

possesses infinite attributes each of which are infinite in scope.

Islam as a religion is very GOD centric. In fact to just become a Muslim or to become a follower

of this Religion Islam, a person would have to sincerely declare his or her belief or his or her

Faith to the presence of this GOD and the fact that this GOD is One. Which means that there is no

    other GOD whatsoever.

    This declaration is commonly referred to as the Kalima, is in Arabic, and states as folows;

Laa ilaaha IllaLLaH, which means there is no GOD or no Ilaa, except Allah

When a person becomes a Muslim, as he keeps on learning, he is also expected to declare similar

    such Kalimas.

The second of these Kalimas or the Second Kalima is commonly referred to as the Kalima

    Shahaadath. Now the word Shahaadath means testimony or witness and states as follows;

    Ah-hadu an-l ilha il-lal-lahu,

    wah-dahu, l sha-reeka lahu

    Which means;

    I bear witness that (there is) no GOD except Allah;

He is One, He has no partner (whatsoever).

The first Kalima is Laa ilaha IllaLLah and means There is no GOD except Allah and the second

Kalima begins with the words, Ah-hadu an-l ilha il-lal-lahu which means; I bear witness that

there is no GOD except Allah

So we do notice a build up or a development.

First a Muslimwould declare that there is no GOD except Allah, and then he would declare;I bear witness that there is no GOD except Allah and I also bear witness that GOD is One and

    has no Partners

Now, as a Muslim, I used to declare these Kalimas fervently, but I always felt some confusion.

    What would be that confusion?

    Let me explain.

Well, I say I bear witnessto the presence of GOD

Now to me the word witness is a big, big word.

It is not something to be taken lightly. In the World all of us associate this word Witness to a person giving evidence in Court.

  • 7/29/2019 095 Evidence for GOD Part 1

    4/11

    4 95 Evidence of GOD Part 1

    Now, that is serious.

A witness who gives evidence in Court has to first swear upon their Holy Book or sincerely,

solemnly and truly declare that the evidence he gives shall be the truth, the whole truth and

    nothing but the truth.

Now, that is very very serious.

So (*in Court*) when I say I am a witness, what I am very seriously saying is that I saw, I heard, I

am aware of the background of these events and so on.

So (*in Court*) a witness would be someone who has seen or heard or touched or what ever.

He is a person who has had a very real life experiencenot a dream or some hazy hallucination.

Now, to explain my big problemhow can I state,

    Ah-hadu an-l ilha il-lal-lahu,

    wah-dahu, l sha-reeka lahu

    Which means;

I bear witness that (there is) no GOD except Allah; He is One, He has no partner (whatsoever).

When I have not seen GOD, or heard Him or touched Him.

How can I say I am a witness to this fact?

I agree that I can say I believe in GOD that makes sense,

but then to say that I bear witness can I say that I am a witness?

Now that is very very confusing.

It has been confusing, not only to me, but I am sure that this thought would have crossed the

minds of many other Muslims too.

So, todays talk would be to sort out this confusion and clarify that fact that if we look, then we

would indeed be witnesses to GOD, and that He is One and that He has no Partners, nor is He in

    need of any partners whatsoever.

To understand this, let us come back to Court. Let us imagine that the Judge is trying a Murder

Case. Somebody has been murdered. There is a scene of crime, there is a dead body, there is a

knife immersed in to the body, there is blood, there are finger prints and other bits of evidence.

Now the Judge or the Jury or the media or the general public, have not visited the scene of crime,

have not seen the dead body, have not examined the knife used or the would or the signs of the

struggle in the room, nor do they know anything about the background or the sequence of eventsthat lead to this murder.

But then what happens is that the Police visit the scene of Crime, they meitculously collect all

evidence - the murder weapon, the fingerprints, they take measurements of many things in the

premises, record statements of many people, send the body for autopsy, get the autopsy report on

cause of death etc and then arrest a suspect or arrest suspects.

All this evidence is placed in front of the Judge, the Jury, the Lawyers who are in court, the family

members who are in Court, the public who are present in Court, and the members of the Media

who may also be present in Court.

  • 7/29/2019 095 Evidence for GOD Part 1

    5/11

    5 95 Evidence of GOD Part 1

The Police would prosecute and would lead evidence that they have collected, against the

accused, whilst there would also be a Lawyer or even ateam of Lawyers raising a number of

questions about the validity of the evidence.

So one party is presenting the evidence, presenting a case, presenting a sequence, presenting a

pattern. Another party is creating doubts, searching for gaps in the presentation, gaps in the

sequence, gaps in the pattern, even going to the extent of creating doubts about the credibility of

the evidence as well as the credibility of the witnesses themselves.

After meticulously examining all evidence and listening to the arguments of both sides, the

prosecution as well as the defense, the Judge gives his verdict. Now let us say, that the verdict is

Guilty what the Judge is telling us that he has examined the evidence provided by the

prosecution as well as the defense and he has been able to clearly observe a sequence, a pattern

that establishes beyond all reasonable doubt the fact that the suspect committed the murder.

In other words, the Judge declares that he has no doubt.

How? The Judge was not present at the scene, when the murder was committed. The judge was

not present when all the events and currents were in motion, maybe over a period of several years, that led to this murder. The Judge just did not know the victim or any of the accused or even any

of the witnesses. How can the judge say I have no doubt?

I am sure every one of us know the answer to that question. In short, the judge examined the

evidence. Was satisfied with the credibility of the evidence, was able to discern a clear pattern or

a sequence that made sense as to the events that led to the murder, and in most instances, all of us

would say the Judge is right.

Now similarly for us to say Ash-hadhu or I bear witness it means that just like that judge, we

should examine all evidence in front of us and we should come to the conclusion that even though

we cannot see GODour eyes just do not possess the capability, we cannot hear GODour earsjust do not possess the capability, we cannot touch or feel GOD, our touch receptors just do not

posses that capability, but then we must come to the conclusion that GOD is present, that GOD is

One and that He has no partners whatsoever.

    How do we do that?

Our eyes cannot see GOD, our ears cannot hear GOD, our touch receptors cannot sense GOD, but

then we possess a mighty processing brain. This brain is able to process what we see, process

what we hear, process what we feel, and through this processing system we can arrange all the

evidence presented by our eyes, our ears and our other senses to discern a very obvious pattern. It

would be more than mere pattern, I would call it discern a well thought out design.

That is the importoant worddetect or discern the design.

If there is design, there has to be a designer, there has to be purpose.

So, it finally comes down to, is there a design? Who is this designer? What is the puropse?

Three very very important questins that every human being has to have asked, has to ask, and it is

equally important that we should seek answers to this question during our lifetimes itself.

Insha Allah, that is very very important.

Now let us examine the evidence.

Where do we start? There is so much evidence. In fact everyting around us is evidence.

  • 7/29/2019 095 Evidence for GOD Part 1

    6/11

    6 95 Evidence of GOD Part 1

Infact I would even say there is no such thing in this world or in this Universe that we can simply

brush off as as not evidence

    Everyting is evidence.

    Even nothingis evidence.

    Amazing isnt it?

So, where do we start from. What is the evidence I choose to first present?

Let us return to that Murder Case once more.

Now in this Case, what would be the best evidence?

The Knife or the Murder weapon?

    The Autopsy Report?

    The eye witness acconts?

    The finger prints?

The best evidence would be a true confession provided by the suspectthe person who planned

and executed the murder. The truthful account by the first person is the most credible and the

    most valuable.

So when we look for evidence about the presence of GOD or better still when we look for the

proper view or the proper reading with which to analyze the presence of GOD it is GODs words

that direct us towards this viewthe view that points out to us the grand design.

So Muslims would turn to the Quran, the Christians to the Bible, the Jews to the Torah or the Old

Testament, the Buddhists to their scriptures and the Hindus to theirs and so on.

I am very very sure all of them describe the very same design or designs. The design or designs

which if we read correctly, we would decalre that we are witnesses to GOD. We are witness to

His infinite attributes. We are witness to the infinite scope of each of His infinite attributes.

The Quran presents to us the Aayaths or the Signs or the pointers to the Signs of Allah, or I would

even prefer to refer to them in this talk as the pointers to the designs of GOD.

In the Quran Allah describes to us seemingly simple examples, but they have to be very very rich

    in meaning.

Since GOD has infinite attributes and each of those infinite attributes are infinite inscipe then it

must follow that each word in the Quran is infinite in depth of meaningit is for us to seek.

If each word is infinite in depth of meaning then each phrase, each sentence is infinite in

describing or bringing out the subtelities of His Grand Design.

So from the 6,236 Aayaths in the Holy Quran I would like to present the story that describes the

process that Prophet Abraham or Ibrahim (AS) underwent to becoming a witness to GOD, as

described by Allah, in the Holy Quran.

First I would like to relate a story of Ibrahim (AS) that I heard in a bayan in Pakistn, maybe over

25 years ago. This story is not found in the Quran or in any Hadith that I have read, but I like this

story and it makes a lot of sense to me.

    Let me explain.

  • 7/29/2019 095 Evidence for GOD Part 1

    7/11

    7 95 Evidence of GOD Part 1

Ibrahim (AS) as a child was very curious as to how the World functioned. So one day he asked his

Mother, Mamaa, who is my Rabb? (Rabb is an Arabic word that appears many times in the

Quran and means Creator, sustainer, nourisher, protector and so on).

Well his Mohter replied Son, I am your Rabb, I feed you, I look after you, I protect you

Ibrahim (AS) was satisfied by this answer.

But then after a few hours he returned to this Mother with the question, Mamaa, then who is your

Rabb? His Mother replied, Son, as you can see, your Father, he is my Rabb

The next question that Ibrahim (AS) asked was; Then Mamaa, who is my Fathers Rabb?

His Mother replied, Why, the King. The King is the Rabb of your Father

I am sure you listeners would be able to guess the next question.

Ibrahim (AS) then asked OK Mamaa, then who is the Kings Rabb?

Well his Mohter replied. Oh, do not ask that question. The King is the Rabb of all his subjects

Obvioulsy Ibrahim (AS) was not satisfied, and now in his search we are introduced through the

Holy Quran to his manner of seekingseeking His Rabb and the Rabb of all the Worlds.

    Two important points that I try to bear in mind, when I read the Aayaths of the Quran;

    1. GOD has infinite attributes and each one of these infinite attributes are infinite in scope.

Therefore each word, phrase and entence in the Quran has infinite depth.

    2. Look for Designif there is design there has to be a designer.

So keeping those two points in mind let us see how GOD describes to us the manner in which

Ibrahim (AS) seeks and recognizes GOD, through GODs designs.

(6:76) When the night covered him over,He saw a star: He said: "This is my Rabb."

But when it set, He said: "I love not those

that set." (6:77) Later, when he saw the moon rising,

he said, This is my Rabb. But, when it

vanished, he said, Had my Lord not

guided me, I would have been among

those gone astray. (6:78) Thereafter, when he saw the sun

rising, he said, This is my Rabb. This is

greater. Again, when it vanished, he said,

O my people, I disown whatever you

associate with Allah (6:79) I have, indeed, turned my face

straight towards the One who created the

heavens and the earth, and I am not one of

those who associate partners with Allah.

  • 7/29/2019 095 Evidence for GOD Part 1

    8/11

    8 95 Evidence of GOD Part 1

Now when we first read these Aayaths, the meanings sound very simple and does not impress us.

Obviously in Arabic there has to be great impact to those who are listening. But then, let us read

in to the meanings of these Aayaths.

In those days, it even happens nowadays as well, people had great faith in the influence of stars.

They noticed that the night sky had simply millions of stars and they were also able to work out

arrangements of stars which we call constelations. So they noticed that these stars moved in the

night skyever so slowlyand that they moved all together, and that over weeks and months the

constellations moved across the night sky and vanished giving room to new constellations, and

they also recognized that there was a pattern a sequence in which these constellatons and in fact

    all the celestial bodies moved.

Does this not draw attention to the fact that there is design in the whole night sky.

Ibrahim (AS) may have been informed about the star that he was linked to, so he declared Haazaa

Rabbithis is my Rabb. But then when the star set or was no longer visible or moved out of the

night skyhe realized that that star could not be his Rabb, because it vanished or set or moved

    out.

But then Ibrahim (AS) observed the design of the night sky, how everything moved together as if

they were all connected, and he noticed the Moon. The Moon was larger and had its own course

it moved independently from the other stars and contellationsso maybe Ibrahim (AS) thought

Oh this is the Master, the one who controls all the celestial bodies, so this must be my Rabb.

Then we are told that when the Moon vanished, he again realized that the Moon cannot be his

    Rabb, because the Moon vanished.

So now he turned his attention to the Sun, the clelstial body which his so bright, it outshines the

light from the Stars or the Moonit dominates the Sky during the day, it stimulates or triggers of

so many life supporting systems in the Atmosphere and on the groundso he thoughtOh thishas to be my RabbHaazaa Rabbee Haazaa Akbarthis is my Rabb, this is the greatest.

But then again we are told, that when the Sun set, Ibrahim (AS) realized that this too could not be

    his Rabb.

Through his seeking Ibrahim (AS) recognized design, great design, the whole of nature was a

symphony of design, such marvels such wonders worked in to this design and he realized that we

are taking objects of this design as our Rabb and not recognizing that there has to be a great

undetectable Rabb creating, guiding, sustaining, managing every one of these great phenomenal

    designs, and thus Ibrahim (AS)s groundbreaking declaration;

(6:79) I have, indeed, turned my face

straight towards the One who created the

heavens and the earth, and I am not one of

those who associate partners with Allah. Is there not a huge huge lesson or huge huge lesons for all of us in these few simple, but infinitely

    rich words?

  • 7/29/2019 095 Evidence for GOD Part 1

    9/11

    9 95 Evidence of GOD Part 1

See the workings of the Universe, see the workings of the world, see the workings within us and

recognize that there is great great design. If there is design ther has to be a designer. If there is

design there has tobe a purpose.

    Who is that great designer?

What is the great noble purpose?

So what does GOD tell us about Ibrahim (AS)?

That Ibrahim (AS) realized that the he as well as the whole Universe has to have a planner, a

designer, a creator, a sustainer, a manager and so on.

That Ibrahim (AS) spent time trying to find out this Rabb.

That Ibrahim (AS) recognized design and then came to the conclusion that through the design we

can identify and recognize GOD and through this design we can work out our purpose of creation.

So he says, I have, indeed, turned my face straight towards the One who created the heavens

    and the earth.,

Now I ask this question, Why did he say, I have turned my face?

The face is actually the institute that contains the tools of detection as well as the front of the head

that houses the brain. So through his eyes, and ears he takes in information,, and through this brain he processes that

informationkeeping in mind one objectiveto recognize GOD, to recognize His design and to

to seek the message encapsulated in the design.

Ibrahim (AS) thus turned his face to this task to this objective.

So we have this faceI would like to use the word interfacein which is placed the eyes and the

ears and which houses the brains.

And out in the Skyespecially visible at night are the Stars and the Moon and visible at day time

is the Sunand there is design!!!

Let me now try to describe this design. Let us try to identify and recognize the designer.

Now through the inter face (that is actually the face) we take in information through our sense

organs and process them in our brain. The face has direction. The sense organs and the brain is

involved in a well connected task, an objectiveto serve GOD.

    Now comes the interesting part.

Our Brain contains around 100 Billion Neurones. I am sure every listener would find that easy to

    understand and to believe.

Now the next factWithin our brain, there are Billions of chemical reactions occurring every

second and signals are being transmitted at speeds of over 260 mph, our brain is rapidly analysing

and responding to all the Sights, Sounds and Smells all around us.

Imagine 100 Billion Neurones and Billions of chemical reactions every second.

Remember there are over 5 Trillion cells in our body!!!

These are not random haphazard chemical reactions, but each one of them is well controlled, has a

well defined target and each reaction does not interfere with any other reaction unless it is

    designed to.

  • 7/29/2019 095 Evidence for GOD Part 1

    10/11

    10 95 Evidence of GOD Part 1

All these billions of reactions being generated every second and all 100 Billion Neurones are

working in tandem, well synchronized, well designed.

These Chemical reactions keep the heart working, the Liver working, the Kidneys working , the

skin functioning, the thoughts and mind processes working, the list could go on and on.

Imagine a Cricketer running across a Cricket field and diving to catch a ball imagine the number

of muscles all working in tandemnworking together. In runing, in sighting, in working out the

speed at which he is running, his direction, the direction the ball is taking, the speed at which the

ball is travelling, hearing the cheers all around him, feeling the adrenaline surging all around his

system, controlling the effects of the adrenalineOh there are so many million things happening

at once, and right through, his heart must work, his lungs must work, his kidneys, his liver, his

thinking, and all at precise ratesagain the list could go on and on.

Is there not great design? If there is design is it not obvious that there should be a designera

    geat magnificent designer?

So our face is the interface to the sense organs of seeing and hearing and our face is the front of

the head that houses our brains that contain approx 100 Billion Neurones all working in tandemnas one body with one purposeis there not design? Great design?

    Now looking at the Sky.

We see the Sunit is the center of our solar systema system that contains the Sun at its center

and 9 planets going around it. The Earth, our Planet Earth, is the 3rd Planet.

The Sun is considered a very small star. There are many bigger stars most of which are the centers

of the many other Solar systems.

There are many such Stars and solar systems that make up our galaxy which we call the MilkyWay, and it would interest listeners to know that there are many other galaies as well.

Now concentrating on our Galzxythe Milky Waydid you know that the Milky Way has over

    100 Billion Stars!!!WOW

Just imagine our brains hold 100 Billion Neurones and the Milky Wayour Galaxycontains

100 Billion Starsjust as all the neurones are connected, working in tandem so are all these

Billions of Stars working in tandem as that gereat body of stars the Galaxy we call the Milky

    Way?

Do we not recognize design. In the smallness of the neurones in our brain to the mighty stars that

make up our mighty but realtively small Galaxy.

Seek the evidence, study the evidence, you be the judge, you be the jury, you be the Lawyers, you

be the Media, you be the visitor to the court House, you be the publicin every one of these

roles, what would be your verdict.

Is there not design? Great design, majestic design, intricate design?

    Then who is the designer?

Are we so dumb as to not be able to come out with the obvious?!

Should we not, like Ibrahim (AS) spend the rest of our lives turning our faces to trying to

recognize, identify this great designer and should we not keep or faces turned to seek out thepurpose of palcing this great design or great designs.

It is the goal of every religion. It is the message of every great religious leader.

It is the goal of the religion Islam and the message of our Prophet Muhammad (Sal)

    Should we not say with sincerity and conviction;

    Ah-hadu an-l ilha il-lal-lahu,

    wah-dahu, l sha-reeka lahu

    Which means;

    I bear witness that (there is) no GOD except Allah;

He is One, He has no partner (whatsoever).

I hope that all you listeners enjoyed listening to this talk as much as I enjoyed preparing for it.

May Allah Taaalah guide us all and accept us all
