OXFORD Update SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2021 ISSUE: 3138 VOL : 06 Patriots, As I walk around campus throughout the day, I see students focusing, studying, working, collaborating, stressing, laughing...it is amazing that unstructured and unhinged our students are taking initiative and using their time to be productive. And sometimes being productive doesn't necessarily mean working on school work---but taking the time to blow off steam by playing volleyball in the quad or posting silly TikToks making others smile. I want to reassure you that that is okay. We all need time to relax and let our brains rest on something that is low stakes and fun. Not all of us have mastered the idea of this balance and some of us have to be very intentional in finding it---as educators and parents this is our charge for our youths. In a world where everything seems like a competition from the ACT scores, to the shoes you wear or how extra you are in asking a date to prom----and in a world where everything seems immediate and instant in gratification never missing a beat of a phone alert, let's remind our children that the true secret is the balance of everything that life throws you. My father never went to college, got married to my mom at 17 years old and started his own company at 24. He just recently went through a 5 year buy out of his company after 30 years of success and establishing a nice legacy to his name and dream. My dad was always working. My mom was a stay at home mom which allowed for him to focus on building his company and making sure we were always okay. He would be out of the house before I was awake---and sometimes not home before I went to bed---but I always remember him being "there". If I had an award assembly at school at 10am in the middle of his day---he was there. If I had golf practice, he took me. If I was singing in a choir show, he was front row. And when I needed help with my math homework, well he tried so hard, but it usually ended up in a fight of frustration because we were both so hard headed LOL. What I am trying to say here, is that he mastered the key to balance. He figured out what was the most important things and made sure he was there. HE knew how important it was to work and battled the pressures daily of providing for a family and growing a company---but he also knew he would reap rewards and be rich in other ways by taking the time to show up for others. And at the end of his career, he could say he truly had it all. May you all find the necessary balance in all you do. So our word for the week is from our Physical Education department: All the best, Principal Houston
