SALAD BAR LUNCH OPTION Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will have the option of a salad bar on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month. In September, we will be offering the salad bar option on Thursday, September 15, only. The salad bar will include a variety of protein items, vegetable items, and condiments. A breadstick and choice of milk will also be available for students. Students will need to order this option on the Monday of the week it is offered.

5-Day Rotation Schedule Students will be on a 5-day rotational schedule for special classes, including physical education, music, art, library, computer and guidance. A calendar of the rotation schedule is posted on Riverside’s webpage.

SCHOOL PICTURE DAY Photographers from Lifetouch Photography will be at Riverside on Monday, September 26, to take student pictures. Students will be bringing home a flier with more information on how to order portrait packages. All students will be photographed for the yearbook, so please dress accordingly—and don’t forget your smiles!

A Message from the Principal Dear Riverside Families, We have had a wonderful start to the 2016-17 school year. I am excited to have our students and staff return for a new year of learning. Over the summer we had been very busy making improvements to our building and our staff participated in numerous professional development opportunities. This summer our teachers learned about a way to systematically teach writing that will provide consistency across the grades in our school and throughout the district. We are excited to implement the curriculum and see our

students increase the amount they write and the quality of their writing. Our hope is with this focus on writing our students will increase their skill level and develop pride in their writing which will lead to increased enjoyment. We will share more with you throughout the year about what we are doing in writing and more importantly how the kids are doing. I would also like to encourage parents to become involved or help out in any way they can in our school. You can do this by signing up to volunteer on SignUpGenius which is posted on our Riverside homepage, volunteering in your child’s classroom, helping with clerical tasks, or participating in the Riverside PTO. If you would like to get involved with our PTO you can attend any of our meetings on the second Monday of every month at 6:00 in the Riverside IMC. We are looking forward to working with you to provide the best educational experience for your child. Sincerely, Kevin Kampmann

PA TY INVITATION

Please do not bring or send invitations to parties

(or party thank-you notes) to school with your

child. This creates a situation where the feelings

of others can become hurt and it is also a

distraction to the purpose of school. Please use

the U. . Postal ervice for sending invitations.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAYS Please note that during the school year there will be days when there will be no school for students or they will be released at 12:00 Noon . These inservice days will give teachers time for staff development, long-range planning or to work on special building projects. On early release days, students will be served lunch before dismissal. Please note the following staff development dates for the 2016-17 school year:

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE DATES

The following dates have been established for Parent-Teacher Conferences for the 2016-17 school year:

voicemail. For doctor or dentist appointments, please bring a slip from the Dr.’s office to have the absence considered as a medical excuse.

• iPads & Textbooks: All iPads and workbooks needed for the education of your child will be furnished by the school district. These items, and all other school property, are to be handled with extreme care by the students to ensure long use. Any property that is damaged by a student will be replaced by that student at his/her expense.

earlier since, prior to that time, teachers are not available to provide necessary supervision. School begins at 8:42am.

• Student Dismissal: When picking up your child at the end of the day, be sure to sign out your child at the podium in the lobby or at the office. Please wait in the lobby until classes are dismissed. For the safety of our students, parents are not to wait in the hallways for their child. Students must leave the building at the end of the day through the front door entrance.

• Alternate Pick-Up Plans: Please be sure to send a note to your child’s teacher if there will be a change in transportation for your child after school. It is very important for the teacher and child to know after school plans. It is difficult at the end of the day to contact teachers and students for last minute changes. All students will be put on their regular bus at dismissal time unless they have a note with alternate instructions.

• No Animal Policy—Animals should not be brought on school grounds. We have students with allergies and we also have this policy for the safety of our children. We cannot anticipate how an animal will react to an individual. We also want to keep our school grounds clean since children play on our grass.

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM At each elementary school, students are assigned a PIN (personal identification number) for their student lunch account. Parents are asked to make payments to their child’s lunch account to cover the cost of their child’s meals. Each child inputs their PIN into a computerized register at mealtime. The cost of their meal is deducted from their lunch account. BREAKFAST: Riverside offers a grab-and-go breakfast to students each day that school is in session, unless there is a school delay. Cost of breakfast is $1.25. There is no charge for students receiving free or reduced price meals. Students need to order breakfast the day prior. Following is the grab and go breakfast menu:

Monday: Breakfast Meal Break (cereal, Breakfast crackers and ½ c juice) Fruit cup Milk

Tuesday: Fruit cup Fruit juice Cereal Bar String Cheese Milk Wednesday: Fruit cup Fruit juice Muffin Yogurt Milk Thursday: Fruit Cup Fruit Juice Mini-Bagels Milk Friday: Fruit Cup Fruit juice Zucchini bread

Milk The elementary school meal prices for 2016-2017 are as follows: Lunch, $1.65 per day; breakfast, $1.25. Reduced Lunch, 40¢ per day; breakfast, no charge Students who carry their lunch to school may purchase milk for 40¢ per 8 oz. carton. The cost of this milk will also be deducted from their lunch account. Parents should maintain a sufficient balance in their child’s lunch account to cover the cost of snack milk, school breakfast, school lunch, or lunch milk. Please make checks payable to Riverside School and include the student name and PIN with the deposit. Parents are encouraged to sign up for mySchoolBucks found on the DCE website and following the Food Service link. mySchoolBucks will allow parents to view their child’s lunch account activity and make payments to their child’s account.

2016-17 Meal Costs Daily: Lunch--$1.65; breakfast--$1.25; milk--40¢, reduced meals--40¢ Month: Lunch & snack milk--$41.00 Quarter: Lunch & snack milk--$92.25 Semester: Lunch & snack milk--$184.50 Guest Lunches: $3.15. If you would like to come in and eat school lunch with your child, PLEASE let the office know the day before so that we can order the right amount of lunches from Food Service. Also, if you could bring the exact amount, that would be helpful as we don’t always have change in the office.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

SMART SNACKS IN SCHOOL The D.C. Everest District is implementing the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Smart Snacks in School initiative.

For any foods BROUGHT to school: This includes birthday and other food items brought to school by students, staff, or parents. Our policy states that in order to

prevent possible food contamination or food-borne illness, foods brought for classroom distribution by students or staff must be commercially prepared and in the original packaging. Any food items brought to school that do not meet these requirements will not be distributed. So, birthday treats are still welcome, but must be purchased (not baked at home) and in original packaging.
