We must grow more large High Tech firms

Large firms formed in the area stay here more often than foreign implants
Cambridge was little affected by the Dotcom bust because firms chose niches with low failure rates
Micro (1-4 person) firm numbers now falling
Many micros were formed in 2002-4, especially in software – this slowed in 2006 and it is the poor survival rate of these micros which is causing the fall
How can we make more Abcams and Red Gates?
Next steps• More help for the Greater South East
– Cambridge Network currently receives very little government funding, but major funders are keen to help our companies grow and succeed and our users find work
– Current initiatives include :• expanding the jobs service;• enhancing the support given to employers; • improving training and opportunities for growth-oriented companies
• More help for Members– Members are confused by the enormous number of jobs, events and news items being generated
by our website by our rapidly expanding Member base– Current initiatives include :
• CEO peer-to-peer coaching; • streaming video of events available to all members;• improved targeting and alerting of relevant job offers, events and news for individual users
• More hands-on support from a growing core team– Automation of the website and users alert services allows the team to focus on helping Members
get the most out of their Memberships
