Cromer Sea Defence Work Comes To A Close

Work to help protect Cromer from rising sea levels and potentialstorm damage has come to a close more than two years after itstarted on site in January 2014.

The 8million pound scheme, carried out by contractorsVolkerStevin, was increased signicantly to include repairsto the sea defences and foreshore infrastructure caused by theexceptional storm surge of Dec 2013.With a pause for the summer seasons (end of April to end ofSeptember 2014 and 2015) the focus has been on ensuringCromer Promenade, the sea defence foundations, walls and

groynes are strong enough to help protect the town for futureyears.

Dear Editor,I am motivated to write to express my dismay at the Childish andunhelpful Political wranglings over the forthcoming Brexit Referendum.

Once again our elected o cials have descended into self-indulgenthyperbole leaving the public a mixture of afraid and confused.I earnestly urge people to read up, attend debates and think about it, it isimportant. For myself when i look at the prospect of Donald Trump in America,Putin in Russia and Little Kim in North Korea i cant help but feel thatwe should stay part of the Europe Gang. I dont think its a good time togo it alone.Democracy means we get to vote but how much more is each voteworth if it is cast by someone who has an informed opinion.Mr J Thornton (Cromer)

    Drawn-Together: The Art of HavingFun

Children are invited to come and join artist Kirsty OLeary-Leeson create Roald Dahl and Illustration inspired artworks at herBig Friendly Art Club at Cromer and North Walsham Librariesafter school in June and July (dates below). The workshops arelottery funded with all materials and very importantly squashand biscuits provided free of charge. Last year Kirsty received

lottery funding to run a variety of local art workshops, and Crabtales went along to see one that was running at Cromer Juniorschool, where artistry, creativity and fun were in full swing; sheis thrilled to have received another grant this year and is workingwith the libraries, in conjunction with their Summer readingchallenge, to inspire young people to discover the books of RoaldDahl and the weird and wonderful creatures and characters thatinhabit them.

There will be craft sessions where the bugs from James s GiantPeach will come to life and BFG inspired Dream Jars will bemade, as well as sessions where children will learn dierentillustration techniques.

Another result of Kirstys contact with the National Lottery was

they approached her to submit a drawing for an exciting projectthe Lottery is organising for Olympic Team GB athletes. Whenour sports men and women are in their rooms at the AthletesVillage in Rio this summer, they will have an Olympic inspiredColouring Book to help them relax, and Kirstys design has beenchosen to be included.

So North Norfolk readers are getting a sneak preview of it, beforeany of the Olympians do!

PanamaniaWritten by Miranda Marshall Director at Hayes + StorrTrusts have received all sorts of bad press over the last few weeks. They have becomeemblematic of underhand arrangements designed to deprive HM Treasury of their dues

by those more than able to pay.Let us examine some of the common misunderstandings.

Trusts are only for the wealthy: Wrong.

Trusts are a way of concealing the true ownership: Ah well, there is more thana grain of truth in this; but the purpose of setting up a trust is often primarily protectiveand is usually with the best intentions.

Trusts are for avoiding tax: Generally, this is not the case. Trusts have their owntax system which, put simply, often taxes them as severely as the very highest earners. Ifthe income is paid out to beneciaries, then usually they can claim back that higher ratetax so the income they receive is taxed at the same level as their own income.

What is certain is that trusts are complicated and the law behind them is oftenmisunderstood or poorly grasped, including by nancial journalists eager for a quickheadline. So, why create a trust, if not for nefarious reasons? The best and most frequent reason is to leave assets, often by Will on death, to children, the young or nancially-immature. This way the funds can be used to help with theirupbringing or education, at the discretion of those with their best interests at heart.Often, the funds are held back until they reach not just 18 or 21 but more often 25. Ihave seen vesting ages of as late as 30, where the parent or grandparent fears for thechild and/or there is much growing up to be done. In the meantime, the trustees canmake payments to or for the benet of the eventual recipient.Indeed, trusts can be a way of continuing to exercise control from the grave; butusually with kind intentions.Trusts are also a way of making gifts to those who are vulnerable so as to be able todrip-feed funds to them throughout their life without making them ineligible for state

benets.Trusts can be managed so that beneciaries with drink, drug or other di culties, whichit is hoped they will in time overcome, can have the funds paid to them when they willmake better use of them. The main use of trusts in tax planning is to pass assets on, without any reservation of

benet by the giver, without losing control and without seeing the funds dissipated orotherwise misused. This means that the gift can be made sooner than otherwise and it ismore likely therefore to pass tax free.

Trusts arose as a legal concept when the Crusaders left theircastles to others to look after whilst they went o to the HolyLand and in case they didnt come back. Trusts have anhonourable English legal tradition and must continue to do so.This article aims to supply general information, but it is notintended to constitute advice. Every eort is made to ensurethat the law referred to is correct at the date of publication andto avoid any statement which may mislead. However no dutyof care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted forany omission or inaccuracy. WEST RUNTON BEACH ONE STEPCLOSER TO BLUE FLAG STATUS.

West Runton beach has been ocially designated as a bathing water, akey step on the way to winning sought-after Blue Flag status.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Aairs (Defra) hasannounced today that West Runton has successfully passed the tests to

    achieve the designation.

Beaches and inland lakes that attract a large number of bathers can bedesignated as bathing waters under the Bathing Water Directive. Waterquality at bathing waters is tested during the bathing season, which in

England runs from 15 May to 30 September.Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: The district isvery proud of its four Blue Flag beaches at Cromer, Sheringham, Sea

Palling and Mundesley. The Blue Flag status helps both visitors and locals understand how

clean a beach and its waters are, as well as the high quality of facilitiesprovided. It is something which is recognised worldwide.

Bathing water designation is one of the crucial steps on the way towinning Seaside Award status, and then Blue Flag status.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, ward member for the Runtons, said: This isfantastic news for local people, local business and visitors. The quality

of the beach warrants the designation, both in terms of its beautifulvisual appeal and in terms of its history. We have coachloads of young

people coming here on regular occasions to learn about the West RuntonMammoth, the chalk reef and the Cromer Forest Bed.

The application for the designation was formally made by North NorfolkDistrict Council following a local consultation. Defra ran its own

consultation which was completed in March.West Runton has RNLI Lifeguards operating from July to September,

public toilets at the bottom of the gangway, car parking, bus and railservices, a caf by the gangway and other food outlets and shops in the

village. It also has a voluntary beach warden and a dog free area betweenMay 1 and September 30.

    LORNE GREEN ELECTEDNORFOLK CRIMECOMMISSIONER.

Norfolk science ction fans weredelighted to hear that Lorne Green hadbeen elected Norfolks next Police and

Crime Commissioner. With CommanderAdamma from Battlestar Galactica at thehelm Norfolk residents could feel safer

from criminals and Cylons.Sadly it turns out that Lorne Green died

in 1987, quite aside from the fact that henever expressed any interest in Norfolk

    Politics.

One of these is Lorne Green ournew Crime Commissioner

A Walk on the Wild Side! More Mundesley Mumblings.Wow, we did it. We actually had a bank holiday weekend and managed almost all of it dry. And we even sneaked in some sunshine.Amazing. I am sure I am not the only person who has welcomed at last a little warmth in the spring sunshine. Though we have hadour fair share of sun it has been down right chilly. The beach walks have been spectacular though. This weekend was marked by thefact I saw more snakes in 2 days than I have seen in years. Saturday saw us walking around Holt country park and seeing not 1 but 2Adders. An indigenous snake that I have to confess never having seen in real life.On Bank holiday Monday however the prodigal son, husband and I ventured out to Martham to visit the Scarecrow festival andvillage fair, and well I can only say it was a resounding success. Bravo to the organisers it was absolutely brilliant. The pics showour son gingerly holding a 14-year-old female Boa Constrictor (it had denitely been fed as it had a bulge half way down!) which was

surprisingly docile. Thankfully the snake did not seem phased by being held by a Tiger. It is lovely to watch your child turn into areal little monster right before your eyes. But back to the festival. There were all sorts of stalls, and even a fun fair. Along with thede rigour tombolas which meant we dragged yet more soft toys home to add to the growing zoo we already have, but my real aledrinking husband was gutted that all he won was a bottle of lager. Maybe the powers that be were telling him something? If nothingelse, it was worth the leg pull! The range of handy crafts, and also animal shelters was wide and varied. We got to stroke a tiny Foxcub that had been rescued, a baby Hedgehog, and along with the Boa, there was an Owl, a Tortoise, a Crow amongst others, all weneeded was a pussy cat and a pea green boat! Not only that but we even managed to have the rst Bar-B-Que of the year, and theweather is set to turn positively balmy. There is something positively English about stoically sitting in the garden in various eecesand cardigans, stubbornly waiting for the food to cook. It was only when I realised that even the dog had given up the ghost andgone indoors, and not even the promise of a sausage was enough to keep her out in the wind and cold. We struggled on until the wind

picked up and even the salad was being tossed out of the bowl. Never mind, we will get there. However, I know its nearly summer when the harbinger of the summer months is the rst roll up of the year at the bowls club inMundesley. This year it was a perfect afternoon, and the season is now in full swing. My mum has now joined the Bowls seasonwidows, though secretly it gives her a chance to do some things on her own but dont tell my Dad! There is something verysoothing about the sound of the players ribbing each other, the clack of the bowls every now and then. One of those sights and sounds

that takes me back to pass times of when I was a child, and even memories of village cricket, though that was marred by my unclebatting splendidly and only spoiled by the fact I got whacked in the head by the cricket ball. Probably explains many things..

Looking ahead we now have the touristseason starting in earnest and festivalsand events taking place all over the area.Great news for us locals as we get totake advantage of it all on our doorstep,I wonder what adventures will be instore for usOh and by the wayapparently Tigers drink the juice of athousand worms, something I was notaware of and I am not really sure I had zookeeper added to my parenting CV! 2016 ART TRAILThe Art Trail is an annual event that uses an art theme to createa journey of discovery in the Cromer and Sheringham area. This

Years theme is Beach Huts.Around a hundred hand crafted miniature Beach Huts are

located at many of the most iconic local points of interest. Openthe doors and reveal the art as well as see much of whats best

about our lovely area. The organisors tell us, This year were delighted to have

teamed up with wonderful local charity About WithFriends who will be hand-crafting our specially designed

beach huts in their Cromer workshop. This active andenergetic charity supports people with learning disabilities

and, as well as the workshop, they also oer gardeningand catering services, and run a super community cafe

Our sample hut has been decorated inside with a deep seadiving theme, and were looking forward to seeing what ourlocal artists & creatives can do with these superb little huts...

just the right size to hang as a small wall cupboard at home!

Trail starts at Easter, there may be 100 huts to spot....a greatway to explore our towns & surrounding areas.

Leaets will be available from Tourist Information Centres &many places around town.
