Silver anniversary■ ALAN SLOAN

[email protected]

Celebrating its 25th year, the originalBen Hogan Tour for aspiring profession-al golfers looking to earn a PGA Tourcard — now web.com Tour — has hadthree reliable stops nationwide all 25years.

Knox County has been one of those— with Farragut’s Fox Den CountryClub hosting the past 16 years afterFarragut’s Willow Creek Golf Club host-ed the first five (1990-94).

A field including former PGA Tourpros joins a former Farragut HighSchool star golfer, Brandon Bunn, as a156-man field descends upon Farragutand FDCC for 2014 News Sentinel Openpresented by Pilot Thursday throughSunday, Aug. 14-17.

Six former News Sentinel Openchamps are among the 156: DarronStiles (2002, 2012), Hunter Haas (2004,2006), Jeff Gove (1999), Vaughn Taylor(2003), Jarrod Lyle (2008) and KevinJohnson (2009).

Purse is $550,000, with $99,000 goingto the champion.

Of the three remaining web.com Tourcities/towns from 1990, Farragut “wasthe first one on the list that year, so wehold our head high in saying we are theoldest one,” Scott Moran, FDCC HeadGolf Professional, said.

Highlighting this silver anniversary of“minor league” professional golf inKnox County and nationwide — whilecommemorating PGA Tour “majors”champions such as Bubba Watson, LeeJanzen and John Daly who have playedat FDCC — “They are going to have apavilion this year by the putting green,”Moran said of what he called a “historytent.”

“It’s basically a historical pavilion …and will have a list with all the namesincluding myself and a few other peo-ple. There’s about 20 or 25 local players, amateurs and professionals, that haveplayed in the News Sentinel Open,” headded.

“A lot of life-sized stand-up [cutoutimages], like Tom Lehman and Bubba

Watson, life-sized stand-up photographsthat kids can have their pictures takenwith. It’s just going to be like a neat lit-tle historical tent that people can visitand see the history from the Ben HoganTour to what it is now, the web.comTour.”

Also on display will be the trophy “ofthe winner of the very first Ben HoganTour event [in 1990], which was held inCalifornia,” Moran said. “He sent us histrophy to put on display.”

Tee times for the par 71, 7,071-yardcourse are on page 19.

General admission is $10 daily and$25 for a weekly pass. Tickets are onsale each tournament day at theentrance gate. Purchase pre-sale andgroup tickets by contacting tournamentheadquarters at 865-966-7693.

Parking in the field off Smith Roadabout one-half mile north of the SmithRoad-Kingston Pike intersection is $5,which benefits local Shriners.Transportation is provided to and fromthe course from one hour before firsttee times to one hour after each round.

Copper Cellar 19th Hole Pass is $125per day, which includes admission. Passprovides an all-you-can-eat buffet pro-vided by Copper Cellar Catering.

Heineken House on 16 Pass is $65 perday, with tournament admission. It pro-vides full service hospitality in an out-door setting at hole No 16.

As for changes in course or individualhole design, “Nothing has changedwithin the last two years,” Moran said.

Moran made it clear that neitherWeb.com Tour nor PGA officials oragronomists “have ever influenced whatwe’ve done on the golf course.”

Working through “the golf committee, the greens committees and our golfcourse architect, Bill Bergin, we haveestablished things we know that weneeded to improve and change,” Moranadded.

“The only thing the PGA Tour agrono-mist will do is they will kind of give usrecommendations as to the mowing pat-terns, and trying to increase some areasof turf conditions and the health of thegolf course.”

A two-time state PGA Player of the Year whoearned his way into three PGA Tour majors(1986 U.S. Open plus 1994 and 1996 PGA), WaltChapman of Farragut said he’s played Fox DenCountry Club’s golf course “probably 75 to 100times.”

Chapman, 52, said he’s received feedbackfrom “30 or so” web.com Tour professionalsabout FDCC, “at least a dozen” of whom cur-rently play on the Tour.

“I think a lot of the guys like the course OK,they like the clubhouse, they get treated reallywell,” Chapman, Director of Instruction atFairways and Greens Golf Center in WestKnoxville, added. “They do a really good jobwith the tournament from what I’ve heard frommost of the guys.”

Web.com Tour’s annual News Sentinel Openpresented by Pilot, celebrating its 25th year inKnox County and 16th straight year at Fox Den,brings a field of 156 — including former PGATour pros — to Farragut Thursday, Aug. 14,through Sunday, Aug. 17.

Tee times for the par 71, 7,071-yard courseare on page 19.

With FDCC being “a placement-position golfcourse, it really takes the driver out of theirhands a lot. That’s the only complaint I usuallyhear,” Chapman added. “You just don’t hit a lotof drivers there if you hit the ball a long ways. Some of the other courses on the web.com Tourare longer and more straightforward. This one

has a little more strategy and placement to it.” Overall, however, “I think most people like

the golf course,” he said. “You can be a shorthitter or a long hitter and still be competitiveon it.”

As for Chapman’s favorite holes, “I like 15[par 4, 427 yards] for the challenge, for thepositioning and the second shot,” he said.“Sixteen [par 3, 214] I think is a really good par3 for a challenge.”

As for the most difficult holes for theweb.com Tour pros, “No. 15 is one of them,”Chapman said. “Seventeen [par 4, 458] can getyou in trouble, definitely, because it’s a longerpar 4 to get up and down if you miss the green.No. 4 [par 4, 436] is a difficult hole because ofthe way the green slopes kind of away from youon the second shot. It’s hard to hit that green.”

Chapman analyzes each of FDCC’s 18 holesfrom a web.com Tour perspective:

No. 1 (par 4, 482 yards): “The first hole they converted to a par 4 last

year, it’s normally a par 5. It’s a dogleg to theright and a lot of guys will hit driver over thecorner, or possibly even long ones will hit a 3-wood.

“It’s a pretty hard opening hole because youhave to hit a good tee shot. And then you’reprobably going to have a middle iron into thefirst green.”

No. 4 (par 4, 436 yards): “Dogleg right, again a position hole. Most guys

are going to hit 3-wood out there, keep it left ofthe tree. The key to that hole is the second shot. The green is kind of narrow from front to back,so you’ve got to have the correct distance on thesecond shot. And even the pond on the leftcomes into play on your second shot as well, soclub selection on the second shot is importanton that hole.”

No. 2 (par 3, 193 yards): “A par 3. On the green, if they put the pin on the left it’s a

really tough pin placement because they’ll have the greenspretty hard, and if you pull it a little bit it can actually hit onthat green and go into the water. So most people will try toaim a little right of the pin.”

No. 3 (par 4, 409 yards): “A par 4, little dogleg to the right. Again, a position hole. A

lot of guys will try to hit a driver over that tree [along the fair-way] and then have a short iron. Or you can hit 3-wood a littleleft of that tree and then you’ve probably got a middle ironmore into the hole. The second shot’s uphill, so you want tomake sure you stay short of the hole position on that greenbecause the green slopes from back to front. If you hit it overthe green there you’re going to have a difficult up-and-down.”

HolesFrom page 8

No. 5 (par 5, 533 yards):“A par 5, kind of a double-dogleg. The long-knockers can go for

that green in two. You’ve got to hit a big drive down that right side, then you’ve got to be able to hit something up in the air pretty highfor your second shot. Some long players can get to that green intwo, but you’ve got to be perfect on your tee shot. Most guys willjust hit their drive kind of down the left side then lay up and hit athird shot [to the green] from roughly a hundred yards.”

No. 6 (par 3, 198 yards): “A downhill par 3. Club selection is important. You’ve got to take

into account the downhill. It usually takes about 10 yards off theshot going downhill. Pretty good-sized green. Again, getting theright club selection on that downhill shot is the key.”

No. 7 (par 4, 422 yards): Dogleg left. Most players will hit a 3-wood off

that tee. Try to hit a little bit of a draw with a 3-wood, then you’ve got a 7- or 8-iron into thatgreen. A fairly good-sized green. Again, you do notwant to go long on that hole, really difficult to getup and down if you miss the green there.”

No. 8 (par 4, 400 yards): “Straightaway par 4. You can hit driver there. The longer

knockers, they can get it there; they can get it within a 100yards of the green if they hit a driver. Most guys will hita 3-wood off that tee and then you’ve got a 130-, 140-yard shot. Pretty good-sized green. If the pin’stucked right, you definitely don’t want to missthe green to the right because it’s difficult toget up and down.” No. 10

(par 5, 561 yards): “Par 5 doglegs left and back right. A lot of guys can

get to that green in two. It’s definitely a birdie hole. Ifyou carry the bunker on the left, you can get therewith a hybrid or 3-wood on your second shot. You willsee some guys that will hit it a little right off of thetee, and then they’ll lay up and then have a wedge in.Most people go for that green; it’s a pretty good-sizedgreen. And you can get up and down from around thatgreen, it’s not too severely sloped. A good birdie hole.”

No. 9 (par 4, 421 yards): “A little dogleg left. Uphill on the second

shot. A lot of guys will just hit driver and tryand carry the corner, and that leaves you ashort iron into the ninth hole. You can hit 3-wood there, but you’re going to have alonger second shot going uphill. It’s difficultto get the right club selection on the secondshot because the green is so uphill from you.And it’s a fairly big green, so if you can geton that green you’ve got a pretty good puttfor birdie.”

No. 11 (par 4, 413 yards): “Dogleg left, a sharp left. The tee

shot’s the most important thing there. You’ve got to draw it on your tee shotbecause the fairway slopes to the right,so if you hit it straight it’ll kick your teeshot to the right and then you’ve got alonger shot in there. It’s important, ifyou’re a right-handed golfer, to hit a lit-tle draw there and then you’ll have ashort iron into the green. A pretty good-sized green. The second shot plays a lit-tle uphill. Again, if you miss to the righton your second shot it’s hard to get upand down.”

Par 3, 166 yards

No.13

No. 13 (par 3, 166 yards): “A par 3, really good hole. The green is fairly narrow.

It’s roughly a 175-yard shot. Pin placements are the keythere. They can put a pin back left, back right. Thewater does come into play if you push it. You can hit iton the green there, but if it’s moving to the right it cango into the water on you. Most guys will kind of veertoward the left on that shot.”

No. 14 (par 4, 368 yards):“Dogleg right. A lot of guys hit a 3-wood for position

down the middle. Short second shot, you won’t havemore than a wedge in for your second shot. You can,off that tee, take a driver and try and cut the corner, but it’s probably not worth the risk. Pretty goodgreen, the green’s got some pretty good slope to it.That’s probably a birdie hole for a lot of people ifyou get in good position on that green. The greenhas a little bit of slope on the front part of thegreen.”

No. 15 (par 4, 427 yards): “Pretty difficult hole. A dogleg to the

right. Your tee shot has to be the cor-rect distance, you’ve got to hit it rough-ly about 230 off the tee. If you don’t gothat far you’re blocked by trees on theright. If you go too far on your tee shotyou’ll end up in a fairway bunker. Youdon’t want that because the green hasa pond in front of it, so you have to bein position off the tee to get on thatgreen. A big green with good slope toit. They’ll usually put the pin kind offront left, and a lot of guys will hit it inthe hazard there on their second shotif they pull it at all because the greenslopes off toward the pond.”

Jim Hart has fond memories ofFarragut Lions Club Hole-In-One ShootOut fundraisers from the mid-1990sinside Town limits — a two-part processwhere, in 2014, a lucky and dead-on-aimgolfer will win a Mercedes-Benz new$17,500 Smart Passion Coupe with ahole-in-one.

“It went well, we drew a few hundred. We went over there where SunTrust isnow [along Kingston Pike]. It used to bethe Walmart. I’m thinking we did it eightto 10 years,” Hart, a Farragut Lions Clubmember and Shoot Out committee mem-ber, said about the last FLC Shoot Outfundraiser in 1996 — until now.

Led by committee chair and FLCmember Ed Mee, a seven-member FLCcommittee has revived this fundraiser.

Shootout’s part one begins on groundsadjacent to farragutpress office at 11863

Kingston Pike on four consecutive days:11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday,Aug. 14-15; 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.,Saturday, Aug. 16, and noon to 6 p.m.,Sunday, Aug. 17.

Paying $5 for two balls or $10 for five, participants will tee off from roughly 90yards away looking to be among the topthree closest to the pin each day.

The pin, which has no hole, will have aspecially-cut “green” of roughly 20 feetin diameter, 10 feet all around from thepin, Mee said. “You can shoot as manytimes as you want.”

Those who finish top three each of thefour contest days earn the right to tee offfor a hole-in-one opportunity on No. 11hole (165 yards) at nearby Willow CreekGolf Club starting at 6:30 p.m., Monday,Aug. 25.

Any of the 12 who sinks a hole-in-onewins the Smart Passion Coupe.

In the unlikely event of two or moreholes-in-one, tiebreaker would be an

extra tee-off round where the ball clos-est to the hole wins the car, Mee said.

In addition to winning a chance toshoot for the Smart car at WCGC, dailyprizes will be awarded Aug. 14-17. First-place prizes include Biltmore ticketsand Samsung tablet; second-place prizesinclude movie tickets and a grill plus giftbasket, and third-place prizes include aFisher Tire Co. certificate.

No pre-registration is required, “Justshow up” on one of the four days withinthe designated time, Mee said.

As many as six participants at onetime can take their closest to the holeswings, Hart said.

Parking will be allowed on the west-ernmost Ingles parking lot area (closestto farragutpress), Mee said.

“Six to eight” committee membersand volunteers will be on hand to assistparticipants and oversee the event, Meesaid.

“A couple of tents to keep people outof the sun,” which will be adjacent to thetee-off location, also serves as the signup location for participants according toWayne Stormer, FLC and committeemember.

Irons of all sizes, left and right-hand-ed, will be available. Or participants canuse their own clubs, Mee said. “We’regoing to do our best to have everybodycovered.”

Mee said he’s “very appreciative” toall who are volunteering time and/orresources for the Shoot Out. “Withoutthis location, I don’t know where we’dhold it,” he added.

Mee gave special praise to Tony Cox,president of Republic Newspapers, Inc.and general manager of Horne Radio,LLC, for his Shoot Out publicity work.“Elaine Grove has worked wonderfullywith us,” Mee said about farragutpress

Alan Sloan

Alongside the grand prize, a $17,500 Mercedes-Benz Smart Passion Coupe, Farragut Lions Club members Jim Hart, left, and Ed Mee talk about preparations for the FLC sponsored Hole-In-One Shoot Out on the grounds adjacent tofarragutpress, 11863 Kingston Pike. Shoot Out runs Aug. 14-17, with top finishers moving to Willow Creek Golf Clubfor a hole-in-one chance to win the Smart car at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25.

Hart said Scott Perkins, WCGC PGAHead Professional, and other club offi-cials “have been absolutely fantasticwith us.”

Perkins “came up here and looked

over what we had, and he’s helped uswith clubs,” Hart added. “He’s helped uswith thinking this process through.”

One hundred percent of Lions Clubproceeds go to the following programsaccording to Mee: vision testing and eye-glasses for the needy; KidSight OutreachProgram screening; Tennessee LionsEye Center at Vanderbilt Children’sHospital; East Tennessee Lions EyeBank; Lions Volunteer Blind Industries;

Mee recalled becoming familiar withFLC because he and his sons, Shawn andChad Mee, participated in the old Shoot

Outs. “We’d go by there at Kingston Pike and

[his boys] would say, ‘Hey dad, we wantto do that,’” Mee recalled about Shawnand Chad reacting to Shoot Out advertis-ing signs. “Finally, on a Sunday, I give into go do it. I don’t remember what yearit was.”

The other four committee membersare Tom Nitz, Norvell Burow, GerriCrutchfield and Carl Leonard.

No.18

No. 17 (par 4, 458 yards):“A pretty long par 4. One of the more difficult par 4’s on the

golf course. Dogleg’s to the left. The second shot is uphill. Youkind of have to cut the corner if you want to have a mid-iron inthere. You will see some of the longer knockers hit a 3-wood offthere and just play for the dogleg. But if you do it 3-wood you’regoing to have a longer second shot. The green is uphill. Thegreen has some slope to it, front to back. It’s kind of difficult toget up and down if you do miss that green.”

No. 18 (par 5, 597 yards): “Good distance. The tee shot is very difficult because there’s huge trees on the right, so if

you hit down the right side at all you’re going to be blocked on your second shot. And there’salso a bunker on the left side. You’ve got to hit the tee shot down the left side for your secondshot. For most people it’s a three-shot hole. Your third shot, from roughly a hundred yards, isto a green surrounded by a big pond. Pretty good-sized green, bunker on the left side. In thepast they’ve moved the tee up and enticed guys to go for [the green] in two, which can hap-pen. Your second shot, if you go for it in two, is all carry over water. A great finishing holewhere you can maybe see an eagle if the [pin is] up, and some birdies.”

No. 16 (par 3, 214 yards): “Probably the most difficult par 3 on the course.

Very long, it’s about 225 from the back tee. A good, wide green; bunker on the right. You’re hitting overthe water, a big, huge pond.”

The world’s greatest wines seem to always earn high marks in the global press. That’sthe result of the perfect application of passion and talent. Wines with famous namesand pedigrees definitely command a higher price — but they reward with an unde-niable quality year after year.

The World’s Greatest WinesIt used to be nearly impossible to obtain a steady supply of fine wines in Knoxville, but you can find great wines from the world’s most celebrated producers on a year-round basis at Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits. We even carry wines rated 90 points*or higher by the most discerning wine critics at prices as low as $8.99. So no matterwhat your budget, you can always find something exceptional.

Wine Is Not An Afterthought (To Us)We’re not a “package store” — we didn’t add wine after it became popular. Weopened as a wine specialty store, and after just eleven short years, and a lot of hardwork, we’ve grown into the largest seller of fine wine in the metropolitan Knoxvillearea. Yes, it’s true, we do carry the big brands, but our passion will always be thegems — the best wines we can source from around the world, some new to America, and some with well-deserved international reputations. Even if you already have afavorite liquor store, you should still choose Turkey Creek Wine & Spirits whenev-er you need a guaranteed great wine for a special occasion, just to be sure. Becausewe’ve always been dedicated to making Knoxville a world class wine market. Onegreat score after another.
