After an appearance in the WHAC championship in his firstseason, head coach Carl Graves and his women's basketballteam are no longer the "new kid on the block" following theirshocking win over nationally ranked and top-seededDavenport in the WHAC semi-finals and the emergence ofMartina Franklin.

However, the new season brings a whole new list of challengesto overcome for the second year head coach, among those isthe fact that Franklin will not be available until the secondsemester due to academic issues and the unexpected depar-ture of all-newcomer selection Stephanie Piotrowski from theprogram this summer.

With that in mind, the Crusaders head into the new seasonpicked fourth in the WHAC pre-season poll and return sevenletter winners from a squad that won 15 games last season. Inaddition to the returning talent, Graves added three newcom-ers to the mix that will figure into the equation early on in theseason. Here is a look at the 2007-08 Crusaders.

GUARDSMadonna lost Lindsay Klemmer to graduation following lastseason, but returns a veteran laden guard group that includesreturning starters in the persons of senior Cali Crawford andjunior Alyssa Guerin.

Crawford started 24games last season whileaveraging over 2.5 assistsper game in her first sea-son as a Crusader. Guerinwas one of just threeplayers to appear in all 33games a year ago and isthe lone Crusader tohave started all 33 con-tests. Guerin canned 25triples last season andonce again has the greenlight from downtownagain this season.

Graves has interestingoptions with a pair ofcombo players in 6-1senior Caryn Inman and

6-0 freshman Tabatha Wydryck. Inman, who missed parts oflast season due to her all-American season on the volleyballcourt and a broken wrist, is healthy and only concentrating onbasketball as a fifth-year senior. The Oxford, Mich., native hasthe ability to not only score off the dribble but post up a small-er defender in the paint.

Wydryck come to Madonna from Riverview Gabriel Richard HSand, like Inman can play both on the perimeter and in thepaint. How quickly this newcomer adjusts to the college gamewill dictate her time on the floor.

Rounding out the guards for the Royal and Gold are seniorsRebecca Rufli and Lauhnna Waybrant along with freshmanAmy Walker.

Rufli and Waybrant were teammates at Oakland CommunityCollege before coming to Madonna and both have the abilityto make the long range jumper and run the point if needed.Walker is new to the squad after helping her Carlton Airportsquad to the school's first state district title in school history.Walker played for Graves as a sophomore and junior at AirportHS.

FORWARDSLeading the attack in the paint for Madonna will be the one-two punch of Franklin and pre-season all-WHAC pick ChristieCarrico. Franklin, who set the single-season record with a 17.9point per game average last season, is out until January due toacademic obligations. The first-team all-WHAC pick last yearwas a forced to be reckoned with in the middle for Madonnalast season and Graves is expecting big things once again fromFranklin in her final season.

Carrico, who averaged just under nine points a game last sea-son, is going to be expected to pick up the slack until Franklinreturns. As a sophomore, Carrico saw her playing time increasesignificantly and after averaging 6.2 boards a contest last sea-son, will be counted on to provide another threat down low tocompliment Franklin.

Newcomer Sheryl Jager - who teamed with Wydryck at GabrielRichard - will also see time as Graves will look for the rightcombination early in the season. Inman, Guerin and Wydryckalso have the ability to play down low and will figure into thefront court in 2007-08.

SCHEDULEThe early season schedule for Madonna is a daunting one asMU plays its first nine games away from home. In that mix isthe annual WHAC/MCC Challenge that pits teams from two ofthe top NAIA conferences. The Crusaders will battle withdefending national champion Indiana Wesleyan and NAIAtournament team Bethel in the two day event. Non-leagueshowdowns at Albion, Wayne State and a pair of tournamentsat Campbellsville (Kent.) and Warner Southern (Fla.) also high-light the slate.

The Crusaders will not play at home until a Dec. 19 date withOlivet. That marks the first of two straight (and the only two)home games for MU before the New Year.

January sees the opening of WHAC play and MU will onceagain face the rigors of the conference slate. The Crusaders willbe tested early on as 2007 tournament champ Cornerstonecomes to Livonia on Jan. 16. MU faces off with regular seasonchamp Davenport on Jan. 26 in Grand Rapids to close out thefirst half of the conference season. Home games with Aquinas,UM-Dearborn, Siena Heights and a senior night showdownwith Davenport to close the regular season highlight February. The WHAC tournament runs Feb. 28-March 4.
