With a legacy of over 80 years of transformative, inclusive, quality education towards social justice and people centered development, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences has been at the forefront of creating skilled human service professionals equipped to address the socio-economic challenges of the country. TISS graduates are socially sensitive, ethically sound and globally aware young professionals. The Labour Studies and Social Protection (LSSP) course offered from the TISS Guwahati campus stands unique among other labour studies and conventional management courses in the country due to its thrust on finding sustainable solutions to the labour related problems without discrediting the need for growth and profit. The course curriculum strikes a perfect balance between professional subjects such as Labour Economics, Labour Laws, Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management, and Corporate Governance with those of conventional Social Sciences such as Economics, Politics, Psychology and Sociology. This blend helps prepare professionals with versatile skills and sensitivity to dynamics of human collectives and social issues. The graduating students score high on social awareness, and possess strong theoretical and analytical skills. I am confident they will make meaningful contributions to any organization they are chosen to serve. I wish them the very best in all their future endeavors.

It gives me immense pleasure to write a message for the Placement Brochure of the Centre for Labour Studies and Social Protection(CLSSP), Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS), Guwahati Off-Campus. I offer my congratulations to the students coordinating the Placements at CLSSP for this wonderful initiative and wish all students the very best. Simultaneously , I also thank all potential recruiters for investing their time and effort to support the placement activities. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences at its Guwahati Off-Campus initiated the Centre for Labour Studies and Social Protection in 2013 to impart quality education using a multi-disciplinary perspective . Faculty are committed to preparing students from across disciplines to impact lives of the most vulnerable and marginalized workers .The centre is sensitive to the challenges to work in both the formal and informal sector. Further it encourages research on a range of areas such as migration and its impact on livelihoods ; the changing realities in agriculture, industry and Corporate sector and its’ impact on livelihoods. Besides this, it focuses on fragile and at-risk livelihoods as well as labour relations .I believe that this cohort (2017-2019) from the centre is sensitive to field realities, theoretically sound and sensitized to the needs of populations in relation to the World of Work.You may expect potential recruits of this centre to be the right advocates for fairness in relation to work, industry, employment and Livelihoods.

I am pleased to share the profile of MA LSSP batch 2017-19. Every student in this graduating batch looks forward to meaningful engagements in progressive and pragmatic organizations like yours.

I am happy to endorse the graduating batch of Master’s students from the Labour Studies and Social Protection programme (LSSP) for the year 2019. Each one of them have been trained in a rigorous interdisciplinary academic environment, combined with an in-depth experiential learning from the field. The programme itself is an exciting and unique one that addresses regional issues in a prescient manner. Hence, its graduates are able to assess the challenges and possibilities of labour-welfare regimes in a part of the world that has received relatively less attention from policy-makers and researchers alike. By drawing on local experiences and linking it to a wider, state-of-the-art knowledge of labour markets, history and legal issues, they will be most suited to face the challenges of the future. I wish them all success in for these and other endeavours that they have chosen.

TISS is a centrally funded public university, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) of the Government of India (GoI) provides the Institute’s Plan and Maintenance Grants. The Institute operates from four campuses located in Mumbai and Tuljapur in Maharashtra, Guwahati (Assam) and Hyderabad (Telangana); and has expanded its education, training, research and outreach activities in several states through its centres at Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Chennai, Ladakh, Nagaland, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, and Thiruvananthapuram. It has over 4,500 students on roll, with nearly one-fifth of them being Doctoral Scholars.

As an institution, TISS has always been a pioneer in the pedagogy of balancing classroom teaching with experiential learning through field based exposure and engagement. Breaking the boundaries of disciplines, TISS engages in high quality interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary programmes. A four pronged strategy of building perspectives, imparting analytical skills, equipping students with relevant information and exposure to real world makes the learning process complete for each student.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati campus has been set up at the behest of the government of Assam and the Ministry of Department of North Eastern Region, Government of India. The goal of establishing TISS, Guwahati campus is to undertake education, training, research and related activities across eight states of North-East India which will enhance the capacities of organizations, communities, states and market in this region.

TISS commenced its academic programmes at its Guwahati campus in 2012 with an emphasis on creating human capital for better contribution to the society. What sets TISS, Guwahati Campus apart is the fact that it is relatively new and modern while at the same time holds close to the ethos of its parent, TISS, Mumbai. At TISS Guwahati the eclectic mix of courses and students, provide an opportunity for students to engage with issues that straddle multi-discipline and thereby get perspectives that would otherwise be missed.

In the last three decades, there has been a fundamental change in employment patterns and employment relations. Keeping this in view, the M.A. programme in Labour Studies and Social Protection (M.A.LSSP) was introduced at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati Campus from the academic year of 2013.

The course stands unique among other labour studies and conventional management courses in the country as it focuses on finding sustainable solutions to the labour related problems in the country without discrediting the need for growth and profit. The course’s unique proposition lies in its curricula, which strikes a perfect balance between professional subjects such as Labour Economics, Labour Laws, Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management, Corporate Governance etc. with those of conventional Social Sciences such as economics, politics and sociology. Moreover, it is one of the few courses in the country which puts special thrust on Social Security of Workers.

Studying in TISS not only changed my perspective towards society but it also opened up new horizons in the arena of social sciences. The contemporary issues of informal sector labour and their social security needs have helped a lot in shaping my ongoing PhD thesis. The interdisciplinary component, the field

• Created compliance docket reference manual through Vivekananda Kendra NRL Hospital for the Tea Labourers’ health issues.

• Worked on the interview satisfaction feedback from the Tea labourers’ based on their socio-economic, health history and environmental hygiene

Dissertation: Multi-cropping to Mono-cropping: Livelihoods of producers and labours in Rubber Plantation of Wokha District of Nagaland

Objective: To understand the increasing mono-cropping that has changed the lives of the rural people; assess sustainability and suitability of rubber plantation as mono-cropping option.
