Chemguard Foam Makers can be used in fixed orsemi-fixed foam fire protection systems. They aredesigned to supply foam to the annular ring areabetween the foam dam and the tank wall on opentop floating roof storage tanks. They are also usedto protect against a spill fire by supplying foam todiked areas where flammable liquids are stored orprocessed.

When used with open top floating roof storagetanks and used for the application of foam to the topof the floating roof seal, the number of foam makersrequired is determined by the circumference of thetank that is to be protected. When using a 12" highfoam dam on the floating roof, a maximum spacingof 40 feet between the discharge outlets of the foammakers is allowed. If a 24" high foam dam is beingused, a maximum spacing of up to 80 feet isallowed between any discharge point. A minimumapplication rate of .30 gpm / sq. ft. is to apply withenough foam concentrate available to supply thesystem with minimum discharge duration of 20minutes.

When mounted on a storage tank or used in a dikeprotection system, the foam maker can be mountedin either a horizontal or vertical position without anydetrimental effect on foam performance.

When using the foam makers for a dike fireprotection system, the foam makers should beinstalled on the outside wall of the dike. A maximumrecommended distance between each foam makeris 30 feet, when the flow from each foam maker is60 gpm or less. The spacing may be increased upto 60 feet when the flow rate is above 60 gpm.

If using the Chemguard Model CGFM 1.5 FoamMaker for a dike fire protection system, a 3-inchdiameter pipe must be connected to the foammaker outlet (downstream side). A minimum lengthof 28 inches is suggested with a maximum length of100 inches being used. This discharge pipe allowsthe correct foam expansion to take place and slowsthe discharging velocity. When using the ModelCGFM 2.5 Foam Maker a 4-inch pipe should be

connected to the discharge side of the maker. Thislength of pipe should be a minimum of 28 inchesand a maximum length of 120 inches. Thedischarge pipe in both instances should be directedback against the inside wall of the dike. This wilallow a more gentle application to any flammableliquid within the dike and lessen submergence othe foam.

When Foam Makers are used with a fire protectionsystem on an open-top floating roof tank, theyshould be mounted above the top of the tank. Asplashboard is installed to which the foam maker(s)is/are attached. The correct size discharge pipefrom the maker should be installed as per the dikeprotection system above. This pipe should beinstalled so that the discharging foam is divertedagainst the splashboard, not directly into the seaarea. This will allow a gentle application of the foamto the seal area.

It is recommended that when installing a foammaker, a minimum 12 inch length of straight pipe isinstalled upstream from the foam maker.

    MAINTENANCE

Chemguard Foam Makers are built to give manyyears of problem free service. However, like anyitem of emergency equipment, it is recommendedthat the following maintenance procedures becarried out on an annual basis.

Inspect all piping and the foam maker(s) to ensurethat the system is intact as designed with no visiblesigns of corrosion.

As there is no internal seal used with foam makersit is most important that the system be flushed withwater on a minimum 3-month basis to ensure thatno bird nests, etc. or any other foreign objects areinside the pipe work that could hinder the operationof the system. The complete foam system is to betested on an annual basis to ensure that the systemwill operate per system design criteria.
