“If you get a good economic director you don’t need this,” said Pryor.

District 5 supervisor Jim Eads also favored hiring an economic director first.

“No consultant will give us any magic until the economy expands,” said Eads. “Do we need this eco-nomic director now? No. The key is to go get that economic director. I think you’re putting the cart before the horse.”

District 4 Supervisor Malvern R. “Rudy” Butler said the lack of an economic development plan hurt the county in attracting development.

ing $800, while his opponent Courtney Hyers reported $1,623 cash on hand after raising $520. She entered the reporting period with a $1,134 starting balance.

Peterson loaned $800 to his campaign after entering the reporting period with a

$4,049 starting balance. Hyers received $520 from the Eads for Goochland County Board of Supervisors Committee. Eads endorsed Hyers for the nomination last year after announcing he would not seek reelection.

Both candidates in District 1 contributed to their own campaigns. Lascolette gave $1,440 to her campaign,

while Hunnel’s $811 total came from two donations he made to his campaign.

No fundraising activity was reporting for the other four incumbent supervisors.

In the 2007 election, District 1 victor Andrew Pryor spent only $2,263, defeating challenges from Kathy Crockett and Herb Griffith.

But in District 5, Eads spent $10,327 fending off a challenge from Pat Turner, who spent $25,371, more than twice the amount spent by any other candidate in the 2007 contest for a seat on the Goochland Board of Supervisors, according to VPAP records.

Eads opposed this mea-sure. “I’d like to see us drop this matter entirely. Goochland is not in the real estate business.” The mea-sure passed 4-1 with Eads in opposition.

In the evening session the board recognized Donna Leabough and Carla Snoddy, who were honored earlier at a dinner in their honor at the Parks and Recreation building, for their induction

into the Goochland County Parks and Recreation Wall of Fame.

Public hearings in the eve-ning session included one on an ordinance, which passed unanimously, to allow hunt-ers to use rifles of greater than .22 caliber from a stand elevated at least 10 feet from the ground. A number of speakers rose to support the measure.

The board also approved

an ordinance change requir-ing photographs of sellers of precious metals and gems to be taken by dealers.

And the board voted 5-0 to approve the redistricting plan for the county after a public hearing at which only one person spoke.

The board next meets on Monday June 13, after a date change to accommodate a scheduling conflict for board chairman William Quarles.

Forum, meeting address UDAs, village planning in Goochland

A crowd of about 75 listens to speakers at the April 27 forum at the Centerville Firehouse.

By Ken [email protected]

What might a village in Goochland look like? That’s the question posed April 27 at the last of three forums put on by the Partnership for Smarter Growth at the Centerville Firehouse.

Three guest speakers addressed the crowd of about 75, and Goochland’s Principal Planner Tom Coleman gave an overview of the existing compre-hensive plan.

Evie Scott, Goochland resi-dent and PSG member, wel-comed the attendees, reminding the crowd that the newly man-dated UDAs were only part of the discussion. But on the subject of UDAs, Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson said “The state is forcing us to have this dialogue,” before Coleman dived into the comp plan.

Perhaps the most interest-ing presentation came from Dan Holmes, Director of State Policy for the Piedmont Environmental Council.

“As a county you really have to find out what your vision is,” said Holmes, who said there is “nothing more detrimental to a growth center than an inappro-priately designed growth center,” citing Frederick County, where a voluntarily designated UDA was adopted which proved too large Holmes stressed making sure that villages be the right size.

“A village can be four blocks,” said Holmes.

Former Director of Planning and Development for the City of Richmond Rachel Flynn gave an informative presentation on the growth of the city, demonstrating how the rise of the automobile changed housing and commer-cial patterns, giving rise to the suburbs and shopping malls out-side the city limits.

“My hope for Goochland is that you think about what you value,” said Flynn.

Several speakers questioned the need for UDAs in the county.

“I don’t understand why we can’t let growth happen organi-cally,” said Pat Hendy.

Holmes countered that UDAs don’t have to be huge.”

Dickson urged that the UDA mandate be looked at as an opportunity.

“Rather than wring our hands about UDAs let’s turn it around and use it,” she said.

“You can dictate exactly what you want,” said Doug Elliot of Enzo’s. “You’ll never lose control if you stay active,” he said.

A meeting the night before at the courthouse on a pro-posed UDA in that area con-vinced planner Tom Coleman that the county should concen-trate on Centerville and West Creek, he said last week.

“Some don’t think the courthouse is appropriate for a UDA,” he said.

Coleman said the earliest the supervisors could consider a new ordinance for UDAs would be in September.

Six of eight misdemeanor

charges of inadequate animal care by owner were upheld at an April 26 hearing in Goochland Circuit Court.

Pet Rescue Foundation operator Annette Thompson waived her right to a jury trial and the case was heard by Judge John R. Cullen.

Two of the eight convic-tions in Goochland General District Court were nolle prossed, or dropped, but the remaining six were upheld with fines imposed totaling $425 plus court costs.

Thompson was original-ly found guilty of the eight Class 4 misdemeanor charg-es after a lengthy series of court hearings beginning in February 2010.

An investigation by an ad hoc group of animal wel-fare advocates had led to two original charges being filed against Thompson on February 27, 2010.

More misdemeanor charg-es were later filed by four individuals, alleging neglect of a number of dogs adopted from the facility, and focusing primarily on a lack of proper veterinary care.

The eight misdemeanor convictions last September 21 ended a long saga of court hearings and continuances which saw the inclusion of a private prosecutor.

Judge Edward Carpenter had ruled that the Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney could not prosecute the charg-es and for a time a special prosecutor handled the case, but Judge Roger L. Morton later ruled that a private pros-ecutor could not be employed by those bringing the com-plaints.

“We are pleased that Annette Thompson has now been found guilty by two courts and two judges,” said

Sue Bell, Executive Director of Homeward Trails and one of the complainants.

“We now are focused on working with Goochland Animal Control to do the right thing and remove the remain-ing animals from her property before they suffer the same way so many of the animals on Thompson’s property have, including hundreds that were not represented in this case.”

“It’s a tempest in a teapot as far as I’m concerned,” said Thompson’s attorney Jeffrey L. Everhart Monday. Everhart said he thought the fines were appropriate. “You’re not talk-ing about animal cruelty,” he said. “It’s animal neglect.”

Everhart said he thought Thompson’s “heart was in the right place.”

Thompson, contacted last week, declined to say whether she would appeal her convic-tions to a higher court.

A new farmers mar-ket opened in Goochland last week. Located next to Sycamore Creek Golf Course on Route 250 in Centerville, the new source for locally grown foods, My Manakin Market, drew a good turnout for its first Saturday.

“We couldn’t ask for a bet-ter day,” said Lisa Dearden, founder and owner of ChiknEGG Productions, which operates the market. “We’re almost at capacity for vendors.”

Dearden served as execu-tive director for The Center for Rural Culture (CRC) until a highly publicized split over accounting policies caused her to resign from the orga-nization in January. CRC had planned to continue to oper-ate a farmers market at Grace Episcopal Church but gave up those plans earlier this year.

Many former CRC vendors were evident at Saturday’s opening of My Manakin Market.

The schedule calls for the market to be open each Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon through October.

It takes a village

Clean up your mess

I live in western Goochland and drive Rt. 6 where a large tract of forest was taken out. The sight that was left is pretty horrific if you ask me, like a tornado or worse.

I feel sorry for the people who live near by and have to look at that destruction all the time. I just don’t think tree companies should be allowed to leave the land like that. If it were a natural disaster, we’d all be pitching in trying to clean up.

But this is just about making money and some of it should go into replanting or a fence.

Scott KingstonGoochland

Or maybe a UDA. Which stands for Urban Development Area, by the way, even though in a promo photo last week we called it an Urban Density Area.

Funny thing, no one called to point out our boo-boo.

Maybe that’s because many folks think of the state mandated areas to be added to the county’s comprehensive plan as just that, small areas with high density housing.

Because that’s basically what they are. House Bill 3202 states that counties “with a growth rate of 15% or a growth rate of 5% and a population of at least 20,000 are required designate at least one Urban Development Area in the comprehensive plan by 2011.”

These areas are to be designed to accommodate “at least 10 years but no more than 20 years worth of growth based on official esti-mates and projections of the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service of the University of Virginia or other official government sources.”

That means greater density than currently exists in the county, so per-haps the name should be changed to Urban Density Areas after all!

What is clear is that, whatever the letters stand for, a lot of folks in Goochland would just as soon have nothing to do with the UDA concept.

This became evident at the April 27 meeting at the Centerville Firehouse, where about 75 folks showed up to take part in a forum sponsored by the Partnership for Smarter Growth.

The last of three forums in the Goochland Village Series, the meet-

ing featured a trio of speakers plus an overview of the county’s current comprehensive plan.

While the speakers sought to pro-mote discussion of what villages in Goochland might be like, questions from the audience concentrated on the UDA requirement.

To us, it’s entirely understandable that the General Assembly would want to promote land use planning that maximizes sparse road building dollars. With higher density housing, mixed use zoning and pedestrian friendly design, the UDAs could well attract folks who might like to alight from their vehicles and stroll about shopping areas near where they live and work.

Or not. Some think the UDA concept

a useless exercise for a county like Goochland, which, they believe, attracts residents precisely because it does not resemble the Fan District of Richmond.

And therefore to mandate from the capital how the county should plan to zone its land for the next 20 years seems presumptuous to some, perhaps downright dictatorial to others.

By all means, let Goochland forge ahead with plans for commonsense devel-opment of village areas in Centerville and West Creek – maybe even something in the Courthouse area. But let’s leave it up to the county to decide how to do it.

So to the General Assembly: Make the UDA concept optional. Do it next year.

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County

The 15th Class of the Goochland Leadership Enterprise recently com-pleted its 2010-2011 ses-sions. Following comple-tion of the class’s scheduled activities, certificates were presented to the partici-

pants at a graduation din-ner held at the Richmond Country Club.

The speaker for the evening was Mr. Wayne Dementi, an active volun-teer in many Goochland organizations. Goochland Leadership Enterprise is a program introducing Goochland citizens to their

county. GLE provides par-ticipants information on varied topics to help famil-iarize citizens with their county’s history, education, services, administration, and budget, and introduces them to their elected offi-cials and representatives.

The 16th Class of GLE will begin in September

with registration beginning mid-summer. Individuals can call the Goochland Extension Office at 804-556-5841 for more infor-mation or visit the web site for the brochure and appli-cation.

that have been participating in a number of county school programs. Of course our participation is only pos-sible because of the infra-structure and motivation of teachers and principals (read their blogs and web sites).

These programs not only

add value to meet or exceed SOL standards but provide the foundations for making the children educatable, see Mr. Austen’s ‘Man to Man’ program at GES.

We are a county that con-tains many folks that can add real value to the school system, and I don’t mean by just paying taxes. More folks can get involved and truly see what is going on and what is

possible. Doing good can also make you feel good.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) urges all horse owners to ask their

veterinarians for West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) vaccination recommen-dations for their animals. Virginia only had one con-firmed case of EEE in 2010

and no cases of West Nile Virus, something that may have been due to the severe drought and the subsequent reduction in mosquito pop-ulations. State officials are concerned that horse owners

may be lulled into inaction by the lack of diseases activ-ity and neglect vaccination this year.

disease activity last year, we still urge horse owners to consider vaccination.” says Dr. Joseph Garvin, Program Manager for VDACS’ Office of Laboratory Services. “We never know what mosquito activity will be in any given year, and the bottom line is, these vaccines are very safe and effective. We believe that in most cases, private vet-erinarians will recommend them for their clients. Horse-owners need to be aware that the vaccines require boosters every six to twelve months.”

Vaccines are available to drastically reduce the inci-dence of these diseases in horses. The vaccines are effective for six to twelve months, so horses should be re-vaccinated at least annual-

ly. In an area where the dis-ease occurs frequently, such as southeast and Tidewater Virginia, most veterinar-ians recommend vaccina-tion every six months. For the vaccine to be effective it must be handled and admin-istered properly and be given at least two weeks before the horse is exposed to the virus. Additionally, to stimulate full immunity, horses must be vaccinated twice, about 30 days apart, the first year that the horse is vaccinated. Other prevention methods include destroying standing water breeding sites for mosqui-toes, using insect repellents and removing animals from mosquito-infested areas dur-ing peak biting times, usually dusk to dawn.

Typical symptoms of encephalitis in equines include staggering, circling, depression, loss of appetite

and sometimes fever and blindness. There is no cure for these diseases, which can kill anywhere from 30 percent (WNV) to 90 percent (EEE) of the horses infected. Humans cannot become infected by handling an infected horse, nor can a horse acquire the virus from another infected horse; however, the presence of an infected horse in the area indicates that mosqui-toes carrying EEE or WNV are present and pose a threat to both humans and horses.

For more information, contact the Office of the State Veterinarian, Division of Animal Industry Services, VDACS, at 804.786.2483 or see http://www.vdacs.vir-ginia.gov/animals/diseases.shtml. Horse owners should contact their veterinarians for further advice on pre-vention, diagnosis and treat-ment.

Students in grades four and five at all three elemen-tary schools worked with song writer Betsy Q to write and record songs with her that relate to science, math, and social studies 4th and 5th grade SOLs.

The teachers at each of the three elementary chose a SOL to be the focus of the song. At each school, Betsy Q worked with the students to compose a song based on those particular SOLs.

Essential vocabulary related to the SOL was incorporated into each song. Melodies were writ-ten for these songs. Two

songs from each school - one 4th grade song and one 5th grade song were writ-ten and then recorded with Betsy Q.

So a total of six songs have been written. These songs will be put on CDs with instrumentation and vocals of the children and Betsy Q. All students in 4th and 5th grade classes will receive a copy of the CD.

Copies will be kept for use in future classes to teach SOL curriculum. Utilizing these songs for years to come will assist students as they learn required SOL material.

After spring break, stu-dents will work on the art-work for the covers which

they will design themselves after the recording is com-plete.

This project was fund-ed through a grant from Partners in the Arts from the University of Richmond, which was written by Byrd’s Enrichment Resource Teacher, Glenda Hawk and music teacher, Kim Watts.

Todd Cooke, sound man for the Kimball Theatre in Colonial Williamsburg, was kind enough to run the sound for the concert.

Special thanks to them and to Betsy Q for her dedi-cation to this project! The All - County Chorus Event, held on April 13, was an awesome way to showcase the talents of everyone!

Kyle Petty’s Charity Ride makes Virginia stop

Virginians may have noticed a vast horde of bikers descend-ing on state earlier this week. But instead of sending resi-dents running for the hills, this group of motorcyclists arrived to cheers and warm welcomes as part of this year’s Kyle Petty’s Charity Ride.

When now retired NASCAR driver Kyle Petty first climbed aboard his motorcycle nearly

two decades ago, he had no idea where the road would lead him. Sixteen years and $14 million later, what began as a largely unplanned cross country trip has turned into the biggest charity fundraiser in NASCAR history.

“The first year we rode from San Francisco, down the coast of California then we started cross country,” Petty said. “We didn’t have a clue what we were doing. There were like 35 of us. We didn’t have any hotel reser-vations. We didn’t know where we were going to eat. We didn’t know where we were going to stay. We didn’t know anything.

We just rode. That was it. It was chaotic and at the same time it was fun.”

Petty’s first charity ride net-ted $35,000 dollars and they gave money to the family of an injured fireman, children’s hospitals along the route and Petty’s Victory Junction camp for children with severe medical conditions. Since that first jour-ney, the charity has raised an average of $750,000 a year.

In the 17th annual edition of the event, approximately 175 motorcyclists took off from Lake Placid, N.Y. on May 7, to work their way along the East Coast with a goal of reaching

Amelia Island, Florida one week and 2400 miles later. It is a first time route for the ride.

For the first 12 years the Charity Ride sought out every possible route from West Coast to East Coast. A few years ago they changed things up, travel-ing from Maine to Miami then the Great Lakes to Savannah, Ga. This year they added an additional twist to the for-mula by making the ride’s first ever two-day stop, which took place in Virginia from Monday through Wednesday.

The UVA team congratulates John Hicks after his solo home run in UVA’s 14-3 win over VCU at The Diamond. Hicks finished the game with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBI.

Former Goochland high school standout John Hicks did not know what to expect when recruiters from the University of Virginia came calling in 2008. He had torn a ligament in his knee during his senior football season and played only three baseball games that spring, but they gave him reason for hope.

“They told me they were going to give me a chance if they thought I was ready for a chance to play,” Hicks said.

The young man from Sandy Hook wasted little time prov-ing he was ready to play. In the three years since he arrived in Charlottesville, Hicks has played in all but three of 178 games and started all but eight—including all 65 games last season and all 48 games so far this one.

Hicks hit .307 in each of his first two seasons. But after hit-ting a home run and a double with two runs scored and two RBI in a 14-3 Virginia shel-lacking of VCU 14-3 at the Diamond last week, his batting average rose to .359 this season.

“John came in as a true

freshman and impacted our lineup right away,” said Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor. “He’s really matured in his three years here. From an offensive standpoint, he’s become a lot more consistent. He’s not chas-ing as many pitches as he used to. He’s overall become a much, much better player.”

Not that Hicks was a shabby player at Goochland. He was a standout in both baseball and

football. As a football player he earned All-District, All-Region and All-State honors in 2006 and 2007, and All-Metro hon-ors after an injury-shortened 2007 season in which he rushed 85 times for 985 yards for an average of (11.27 yards per carry.

As a baseball player he was a three-time All-District honoree, twice an All-Region honoree, and All-Metro and All-State in

2006, his junior year. That year he hit .527 with six home runs and 33 RBI.

But playing college is dif-ferent.

“The pitching every day is top-notch,” Hicks said. “And playing in one of the best con-ferences in the country—the ACC—it’s a grind. You’re play-ing 50-something, 60-some-thing games a year when in high school you played some-

thing like 20, it’s a push.”To meet the more demand-

ing schedule, college players have to take conditioning and weight training more serious-ly. He said he’s gained about 20-25 pounds since starting at Virginia.

“We work hard. We get ourselves in shape and we’re ready to go when the season gets here,” said Hicks. They don’t wait until spring to pre-pare. “The weight training is so much different. I didn’t do too much of that in high school. ... It helps in all parts of the game. It helps your body recover. It helps your legs and arms get in shape and condition, and yeah, it helps add some pop to the bat as well.”

The weight training seems to have paid off in Hicks’ slug-ging percentage, which has increased each year from .476 in 2009 to .535 this season. His on-base percentage has likewise increased each year from .339 in 2009 to .403 this season. But there’s more to his improve-ment at the plate than brawn.

“That’s part of the natu-ral maturation of a hitter,” O’Connor said. “As they get

more and more experiences and they gain more confidence, they’re able to sit on pitches more, not have to chase pitches out of the strike zone, and han-dle a lot more balls. He’s really matured from that standpoint and that shows in the consis-tency of his play.”

Hicks is listed as a catcher, first baseman, and outfielder—and he has plenty of experience and skill in all three positions. But this year, he has settled into the battery as a full-time catcher.

“He’s really led our team the way he’s caught behind the plate all year long,” O’Connor said. “That’s been an important part of his development as a player, too. He’s caught part of the time his first two years, and now he’s the front-line, every-day catcher for us. That’s really made a difference for us. He can throw behind the plate, he’s very athletic, and he’s done a really nice job of handling our pitching staff.”

Despite all the hard work, Hicks is having fun.

“It’s been a dream come

A contrast in production was in store when the Monticello Mustangs softball squad came to Goochland last week for the teams’ second Jefferson District matchup of the year.

The first meeting of the season between the two teams was a classic pitcher’s duel, with the Mustangs capturing a 1-0 victory despite a stellar per-formance by GHS freshman pitcher Kaytlyn Jones. In that game Jones allowed only three hits and recorded six strikeouts, breezing through the game in a little over an hour.

This time would be drasti-cally different.

A combination of Bulldog errors and effective hitting car-ried the visitors through the first innings and allowed them to mount what seemed a safe 6-2 lead by the fourth inning.

“Exciting game, but we made way too many errors in the first innings. You can’t do that against a good team like them,” said GHS coach Amy Henneberger.

But that’s when the Bulldogs began crawling back.

In the bottom of the fourth,

catcher, Bulldog catcher Brandi Tester blasted a single that turned into a run and an RBI to trim the Mustang lead to 6-4.

Monticello answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, and enjoyed a four run advantage until the bottom of the sixth.

But Goochland’s Jordan Fleming blasted a double that scored Jesse Leroy and Erika Spencer and the Bulldogs were back within two. Tester followed with another double that scored a run, and eventually crossed home to knot the game at 8-8.

Goochland loaded the bases

with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, and Spencer drove in Taylor Scruggs for the win-ning run.

The Bulldogs played solid defense in the second half of the contest, but it was clear-ly the Goochland bats that secured the win. Tester made

every minute count at the plate and ended the night with four RBIs.

“I was seeing the ball well tonight,” she said. “We bat-ted really well and came back strong, but we should have played better defense.”

It was a different story for Monticello. “We stopped hit-ting the ball late in the game,” said Mustang coach Beth Humphrey. “If you are going to make mistakes like we did late in the game, you have to hit the ball.”

Henneberger appreciated the comeback and never say die attitude her girls displayed in their last home game of the season.

“They had a lot of heart and didn’t give up, and that’s the key,” she said. “The last couple of games we haven’t rolled over and kept playing to the final round. That’s going to win us some ball games.”

The game was designated as Senior Night and the team also wore pink jerseys and socks in recognition of cancer aware-ness. Henneberger said both messages were important.

“All of the proceeds tonight go the Susan B. Komen Foundation for breast cancer,”

SPORTS: Youth, High School, College, Recreational, Professional

she said. “We do a lot of fund raising to support those efforts and it’s an important message for the girls. Many of them have cancer survivors in their families.”

For seniors like Callie Alvis, it was the last hurrah at home after a three-year varsity career. “It’s really depressing to real-ize we’re leaving this field and the school, but we went out with a bang,” she said. “It makes me excited to know there’s more ahead for us and hope-fully, we’ll do well in the district tournament.”

Jones went the distance on the mound for the Bulldogs, and seemed to get stronger as the game progressed.

The team finishes out its regular season slate on the road, a game with Orange could determine the finishing order. The Bulldogs are currently tied for second in the district with four remaining regular season matchups.Monticello..... 302 120 000 — 8 15 5Goochland..... 200 204 001 — 9 11 8Bodine and Price; K. at the Tides Inn in Irvington,” Petty said. “We’re going to spend two days in that area and just let people ride off around the Chesapeake.” Riders had the option to come explore Richmond, Williamsburg or anywhere in between. “A lot of day rides if people want to go out and run some different routes they can do that kind of stuff.”

The Charity Ride receives a majority of its funds through corporate sponsorships but over the years Petty found the

donations along the route were substantial as well. Between 50-500 people often waited for the group when they made scheduled fuel stops, each ask-ing how they could contribute to the cause. “So we started this thing called Small Change, Big Impact,” Petty said. “We bought a motorcycle and put a sidecar on it. We took the sidecar and we filled over the top and we put a helmet on there.” People along the route could drop spare change, cash or checks in for spur of the moment donations.

However, on the first trip Petty soon began to wonder if the bike would survive. “It

was a junker bike,” he said. “We were like, it’s just a junk bike we’ll put a sidecar on it.” As the ride continued the bike began handling worse and worse while the gas mileage decreased significantly. They left it parked outside their hotel rooms every night wondering if it would start the next morn-ing or break down along the continued route.

It wasn’t until they got back home to Charlotte, N.C. before they discovered the reason why the bike was laboring. “It got

way heavy,” Petty said. “We hauled this thing across coun-try, never checking to see how much money we had or any-thing,” Petty said. “We got back, we had checks, we had cash, we had pennies, we had quarters. So we went through it and we ended up with about $40,000 just people dumping money at gas stops into a sidecar.

“We just left it parked out-side at night because we never thought about there being that much money in it,” Petty said. “It took us forever to count the money.”

This year the charity entered a technological stage with the Text-to-Pledge program where

people wanting to give money can text ‘RIDE’ to 27722 for a $10 donation. “That’s a pro-gram where, as we’re riding across county, instead of peo-ple giving us money, dropping change, just text it,” Petty said. “If you’re following the ride on site or through media or just that, you don’t have to think about it, it can go to that char-ity right now.”

Besides Petty, former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker, NASCAR driver Harry Gant and NASCAR driver and Bo-Dyn Olympic bobsled founder Geoff Bodine were among the riders.

true.” Hicks said. “It’s been a blast, going to Omaha my fresh-man year and just being a part of such good teams all three years here. It just feels great to help the team win.”

It appears that great feeling is infectious.

“I think he’s one of the big leaders on our club,” O’Connor said. “John’s a good, fun-lov-ing guy that enjoys playing the game and loves competing. I think his teammates feed off the energy that he plays the game with.”

Walkerton Tavern is one of Henrico County’s hidden gems.

Located on Mountain Road adjacent the Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center, the historic building has a storied past with former lives as a tavern, store, post office, private residence and a possibly a Union field hospital.

Last week, the site, now part of Henrico’s Recreation and Parks system, opened its doors for its second annual Spring Open House. It was an old fash-

ioned celebration of the season com-plete with watermelon, lemonade, good time music, games and arts and crafts.

“This is a combination of an outdoor spring festival and an open house of Walkerton Tavern,” said Cindy Rinker, site manager. “We’re trying to get fami-lies and kids to take a look at Walkerton and see all of the programs we offer throughout the year,” she added.

More importantly, it gave visitors a first hand look at Walkerton and the many activities it hosts throughout the year. The immaculately restored build-ing is available for private rentals for

weddings and business meetings, and sponsors a variety of specialty programs such as sewing and writing groups.

Opened more than five years ago, the park is gaining popularity, especially for its serene gardens and gazebo area behind the main house. “It’s the perfect place to come and set up a croquet game with your family,” said Rinker.

Site museum technician Bob Lehr hosted tours through the tavern at regu-lar intervals throughout the afternoon, and Paul Muller and the Company

were named the 2011 Gilman Teacher of the Year and First-Year Teacher of the Year at an awards ceremony last night. Gail C. Wood of Hermitage High School and Ashley Ciara Sweatt of Fair Oaks Elementary School were among the 114 teachers honored for their dedication in the classroom.

Wood was named the school division’s 2011 Gilman Teacher of the Year. She teaches French and Spanish at Hermitage High School. Finalists for the award are Sally M. Austin of Pemberton Elementary School; Mindy Fennemore Dobrinski of Holman Middle School; Marcelle Armstrong Hicks of Varina Elementary School; and Alisa Smith of Harvie Elementary School.

Sweatt, the 2011 First-Year Teacher of the Year, teaches third-grade at Fair Oaks Elementary School. Finalists for the award are Lauren Bew of Twin Hickory Elementary School; Elizabeth Foster of Carver Elementary School; and Lindsey Pantele of Glen Allen High School.

The Henrico Education Foundation sup-ported the event, and Herff Jones Inc. donated a $1,000 cash award for the Gilman Teacher of the Year winner and $500 for each of the four finalists.

In addition, Beth Reed, an autism teacher at Mehfoud Elementary School, was named the Christie Award winner for 2011. The Christie Award recog-nizes a member of Exceptional Education and Support Services whose contri-bution to HCPS has been exemplary in service of children and their families.

Store provided a lively mix of homespun melodies.

The tavern, built in 1825 by John Walker, was used primarily as a private residence throughout the years. The county obtained it for use as a recreation center in 2005. “It’s a unique recreation center. We’re maintaining the integrity of the history and keep-ing it as an historic facility while opening it up to the public for a recreation center,” Rinker said.

The landscaped gardens pro-vide a peaceful respite for visi-tors, and many of the flowers were planted by a summer gar-dening group that meets at the tavern. Local Boy Scout troops have also contributed plantings to the gardens.

Rinker said the facility is largely booked on weekends in the spring for weddings, gradu-ation parties and other private activities. The next big event on the Walkerton Tavern schedule takes place in August, when the site will host a Civil War themed event. “We have the 12th Virginia reenactors coming out here for a full day, and that should be a cool event,” Rinker said. “They are going to set up a field hos-pital, and have a sendoff of the troops out front, so we’re excited about that,” she added.

For today, a simple game of badminton or a quiet corner to read seemed more than enough for the visitors. Johnique Spencer passed out watermelon and Kool Pops to anxious takers, and said attendance had been steady for the one-day event. “We’ve had a good turnout,” she said.

Joellyn Harris distributed tiny plants to kids with potential green thumbs and said Saturday’s event was a good collection of fun things to do. Other stations assisted kids in making flow-ers and beading. “It seems like everyone is enjoying the great weather and the relaxing atmo-sphere,” Harris said as she passed out a small marigold seedling.

Rinker said she hopes the

It’s Not Too Late...Too late for what you ask; to insist that your voices be heard by the county administrators? Inrecent weeks, I’ve been looking into how the folks in District 1, Fife, and Hadensville have cast their votes over the past sixteen (16) years relative to the County Supervisor’s seat. I was astonished to fi nd that since 1995 there have not been more than 1,230 votes cast in the local election for Supervisor, a rather dismal showing at best.

In 2007, there were only 1,024 votes cast in the District 1 race for Supervisor, while there were more than 2,500 registered voters living in this district. Currently, with recent redistricting efforts gaining momentum, it appears there will be roughly 3,000 registered voters in the Fife and Hadensville precincts. The total population in this district alone will reach approximately 4,300 residents.

During the 2008 Presidential election, eighty-fi ve (85) percent of the registered voters in Goochland County cast their votes and made their voices heard loud and clear. This makes me believe that the people in District 1 really do care about what happens in their community and the country at large. This being said, I would urge all the residents in each district this year to demonstrate how much they care about our local elections, and go to the polls to cast their votes for change.

I would also hope to see efforts made to ensure those people not yet registered to vote have the opportunity to do so, with the assistance of their friends and neighbors in the registration process. The right to vote in this country was a hard fought battle, and that privilege should not be taken lightly.

Now all this may be somewhat presumptive of me, but I am hoping that when all your votes are counted that I will become your new County Supervisor in District 1. I am certain that if you look at the “roads” right outside your driveway you’ll fi nd they look like a patchwork quilt, where nothingmore than a few minimal spot repairs have never been made.

Many of you may also recall that when the county moved the satellite dump to this area, it wasrecommended by the advisory panel that a site be included for both Fife and Hadensville. The reason the recommendation was ignored is also obvious, and needs no further explanation. There have not been a great deal of improvements made at this end of Goochland in the recent past. While I cannot make promises, “with only one vote to cast out of fi ve” that immediate changes will take place, or be seen overnight, they will in fact be made.

Goochland County is a great place to live and raise your families. However, we in the western part of the county have often been ignored by our elected leaders, and it’s time that changed. We all pay taxes, but we do not all benefi t equally from the taxes paid.

If you feel confi dent enough in me, to select me as your candidate for Supervisor, this is much I promise. I will always be available to you to discuss your concerns, and if possible, walk with you to the doors that need opening, where changes might be addressed, and if possible made. Yourissues will become my issues, and together we can change Goochland County to an even better place to live.

open house will introduce more people to Walkerton, and let citi-zens know just what a great facil-ity it truly is. “We want people to come out and enjoy this,” she said.

And, there’s another good reason for the daylong event, according to Rinker.

“This is a great way to let people come in and have fun.”

Gilman Teacher of the Year is an annual event that rewards teach-ers from across the county for their commitment to education. Teachers are nominated by their schools, and their applications are judged by a panel of administrators and specialists. This group judges

applications based on a point sys-tem for evidence of professional development, school/community activities in and outside of the classroom, participation in pro-fessional organizations, and their professional beliefs essay. Finally, five teachers (one from each mag-isterial district) are nominated for the Gilman Teacher of the Year honor. All five nominees undergo an interview with the panel, and

the winner is declared.

The First-Year Teacher of the Year process begins with admin-istrator and faculty nominations followed by an application and essay by the nominee. A commit-tee of six administrators and spe-cialists review applications based on a rubric. Four nominees are selected to interview, and a winner is chosen.
