The 2016 Sun n Fun event was a big success on all accounts. At first it seemed that weather would be a spoiler as it rained fairly hard up until the Saturday before the start of the event. But by the Sunday before it was bright sunshine with pleasant warm breezes. This helped greatly in drying the ground where aircraft were to be parked.
By Monday most of the ground was usable and any soggy spots were noted and avoided. As the weather remained mostly clear for the rest of the week the parking areas available steadily increases and there was a spot for all flying in.
By the middle of the first official day of the event (Tuesday, April 5) most of the parking/camping areas were well occupied. Aircraft had been arriving steadily since Sunday and the traffic remained at a good flow all week. By the end of the week Vintage was into their overflow area which is just across a taxiway from their main area. This is a very visible indication that Fly-In attendance was great.
By middle of the first day the both Homebuilt parking and Homebuilt camping were very much occupied. I did not get exact numbers but the areas appeared better than half full. And this was just the first official day of the event!

A Change for the Monthly Fly-inBy Michael Stephan
Trying to pick a place a month in advance to fly to, hoping the weather cooperates, has just been frustrating. If it is not working, we may need to try something else. So, instead of picking one weekend and one place, I will post a list of local events and we can fly to the one with good weather. For those who use social media, we can coordinate using that as well. Chapter 168 has a facebook page and a twitter account.
Using those accounts and a a few old school phone calls, we will try to get our Fly-In mojo back. They are fun to go to. Last weekend I flew to three events in one day.

Not my type of airplane. Looks like an over-price, under-capable, aircraft with limited payload, speed, range, lots of regulatory limitations and will be expensive to insure. If you would buy it however, you are not alone. More than 1,500 individuals have put down $5,000.00 deposit for one.
Now, to buy this airplane you will have to sign a 41 page Purchase Agreement and Aircraft Operating Agreement containing the following:
All pilots who fly the airplane must be trained by the manufacturer approved instructor.
All maintenance of the airplane must be done by manufacturer approved mechanics.
Limits the life of the aircraft to 30 years or 6000 hours and requires an airframe overhaul every10 years or 2000 hrs.
Engine overhaul are mandatory at 2000 hours or 15 years.
Buyers must forsake their rights to sue the manufacturer for anything other than a defect in design or manufacturing as determined by the NTSB.Byers must forsake their right to sell the aircraft to someone else without manufacturer approval and require the new buyer to sign a similar
purchase agreement with the manufacturer and pay a transfer fee.
Manufacturer retains then right to buy the airplane back, if buyer decides to sell, at a price capped at the initial purchase price.
Manufacturer will install a Flight Data Recorder and camera to monitor pilot behavior that is owned by the manufacturer and must be maintained by the owner.
Now, if you are willing to sign this purchase agreement and comply with it’s provisions consider the following:
The manufacturer is a privately held company. It was formed to design and manufacture this airplane in 2006. (10 years ago).
The prototype was constructed and made it’s first flight in 2008 and completed flight testing in 2009.
the company has requested FAA LSA rule exceptions for the airplane.
The company has delayed production deliveries several times from initial estimates and has yet to make any customer deliveries.
The purchase price has increased several times from the original estimate of $135,000.00 to $187,000.00 to $247,000.00 to $257,000.00.
If you still want to buy this airplane than the ICON A5 is the airplane for you. Check it out on the web.

The Vintage, Antique and Classic category remained popular as always. This group is open to all aircraft manufactured before 1970. There was so much traffic in this category that by Friday they were parking in their overflow area.
There were over 450 exhibitors at Sun n Fun 2016. Most of the major supplies of engines, avionics, materials and tools were there. One thing that was apparent is there is more diversity in exhibitors that appeared to be geared toward the airshow audience. There were a few more sellers of things like sunglasses, jewelry and decor items for the pilot’s home in the exhibit areas. I guess the “something for everybody” plan is here but I did see it as distraction from this being an aviation event.
On the inside of the Official Program is the Info Guide booklet. It has a list of all the exhibitors and maps to where they are located. One plan would be to mark the maps to show all the aviation exhibitors you want to see and use some pilotage to get from on to another. Or you can wander through all the exhibits and there will be something of interest for sure. And bring your own sunglasses.
Of course Van’s was there with their RV-12 and RV-14A demo aircraft.

The Redline Airshows team (on the cover) provided a superb performance in their Van’s RV-8s. According to the website they are equipped with 200hp engines and Hartzell Composite props. The pilots are Ken Rieder and Jon Thocker.
For the airshow audience the main attraction was the Breitling 7 ship team flying the Czech built L-39 Albatros two seat trainer. The show was impressive and there was a very large crowd there to watch.
An interesting addition to the airshow was a Red Bull air race demonstration. A course was set up with two gates and a few pylons. Two planes participated flown by Kirby Chambliss and Michael Goulian.
The warbird part of the airshow had many interesting planes as usual. One of them was one of the few flying F-86 Sabrejets.
On the other end of the time line for military jets was two from the USAF. There was a F-22 Raptor that performed in the airshow and one of the first public appearances by the F-35 Lightning II.

F-35 Lightning II
2015 Volume 46 Issue Page 6
The warbird ramp static displays were very popular with the crowd. Among the modern military aircraft present were a F-15, FA-18, C-17, P-8 737 based sub hunter, a KC-135 tanker and of course the F-35 Lightning II.
There were numerous WWII era aircraft either on static display or participating in the airshow. There was a B-25, a C-47, a couple of Corsairs, several P-51s and many more.
One of the big hits was the CAF B-17 doing duty as a ride hopper. I lost count of how many laps it did but there were certainly enough people willing to spend the few hundred dollars for the ride. Most of the people taking the ride were young to middle age and it was very good to see the interest in history from these age groups.
In ConclusionSun n Fun in 2016 was a safe and enjoyable event. As far
as I know there were no aircraft emergencies or accidents. The most serious problem we had all week was few aircraft that had to be pushed/pulled out of soft parking spots.
Sun n Fun is now a fly-in, exhibition for the aviation community and an entertainment venue for the general public. There is certainly enough activity in all of these categories satisfy anyone’s interest.
For the fly-in pilots all the areas had a good attendance. It seemed the homebuilt attendance was up for this year. For those looking to attend forums everything was covered from ADS-B (multiple forums) to Wooden Elevator and Rib Construction. Everyday there were workshops for all subjects including composites, metal processes and welding.
The exhibitors were there in force for those in the aviation community seeking information or a purchase. It should be noted that there are often “introductory offers” at Sun n Fun as it is the first major event of the flying season. Fly in, see the show and take advantage of the deals.
The activities to make the event attractive to the general public have been on the increase over the past several years. The biggest draw is the airshow culminated with a performance by a precision jet team. The second biggest is the warbird ramp with its collection of aircraft that can only be seen up close at an event like this. There was also a car
show, events for kids and events for the ladies. There was even a tupperware party!
This has had the desired effect of attracting larger crowds and the subsequent admission fees. While some may say this dilutes the essence of the fly-in, I don’t see that. There is plenty of room for all. Quite simply, bringing in the public gate revenue is what makes a show of this size financially viable.
Another benefit of having a large crowd of non aviation people is that it introduces many young people to aviation. Who knows how many of the children wandering with their parents on the warbird ramp will become pilots or ATC professional etc. is anybodies guess, but there certainly was plenty of kids getting inspired to a possible aviation future.
This was my fifteenth year attending and volunteering with the General Aviation Parking group at Sun n Fun. Since John “Lites” Leenhouts became President and CEO of Sun n Fun several years ago there has been a significant effort to make attending Sun n Fun a much more enjoyable experience for all including the pilots, vendors, the public and even the volunteers. From all I have seen over these years it is paying off more and more. Working on flightline, I get to talk to many guests as they are getting ready to leave and they all said they enjoyed the event. My only difficulty this year was the significant increase in fly-in traffic. I had almost no time to get to forums and workshops.
So I am looking forward to next year and will train a replacement and see more of the show!
Hope to see you all in Lakeland, Florida in 2017.

May 21st Blue Sky Flying at GPMBy Michael Stephan
On May 21st at Grand Prairie Airport, we will have our second event with the Blue Sky Foundation flying the STEM teachers of GPISD.
The first event was very successful, and we expect the same for this one. We will have several experiences for the teachers other than just an airplane ride. We will tour the tower as well as look at a project under construction. We have a few at GP. To be able to do all this at the same time, we will need a few volunteers to help with leading each group. We will start early in the morning and be done before lunch.
This is a very important group to show our branch of the aviation tree . We talk about those kids who “look up” and ways to get them started in aviation. These teachers using aviation STEM curriculum can identify these kids in their classroom. With that knowledge and a working relationship with these teachers, we can effectively use the Young Eagle program to get these kids in the air.
Why is this effort so important?I was at pancake breakfast recently. Looking around at
the group of pilots that flew in I noticed that most if not all of them had grey hair. Half of those pilots will not be flying 10 years from now. Of the ones that are left, half of those won’t flying 10 years from then. So that leaves a small number of us left to be general aviation at the rate we are training new pilots.
If you think there is a pressure for user fees now, just wait until there is not enough of us to even lobby congress. Flying is expensive now. What happens when user fees crush those who are left. If you don’t think it could happen, look to Europe. GA barely exists there.
So, what do we do?We support the activities that encourage new pilots. We
invest now for their future. The investment is our time and talent in coordination with EAA and the Blue Sky Foundation. You might just change a kid’s life.

June 4th Chapter PicnicBy Michael Stephan
The annual Chapter 168 summer picnic will be June 4th at Shortstop airport in Farmersville hosted by Mel and Ann Asberry.
Mel and Ann will cook up some delicious hot dogs. and provide the drinks. If you wish to bring something to add, a side dish or a dessert would be welcomed. Call Ann if you have any questions (972) 784-7544.
This is our best event of the year. We get a large group of people, and get to watch planes land in Mel and Ann’s back yard. It is a family event, so bring the kids. Leave the pets at home. Lets keep our fingers crossed for good weather, and come picnic with us.
Driving Directions to Shortstop AirfieldTraveling east on Highway 380 from McKinney, it's
approximately 18 miles to Farmersville. If you are traveling north on highway 78 out of Garland to Highway 380 turn right (east) onto 380.
After you pass the Dairy Queen on highway 380, it is approximately 1.8 miles to County Road 653, where you'll turn left. This road will “T” into County Road 655. Turn right. The house is .4 miles on the right. Address is 2464 CR 655. Phone (972) 784-7544.
PLEASE do not park off the side of the driveway, but go all the way to the hanger, and you'll be directed parking there.
Airfield Information for ShortstopIf you plan to fly in, please be up on your short field
techniques. Unicom is 122.75; runway is 17/35 with left hand patterns. The field is only 1500 feet. The approaches are clear, no powerlines or trees with a railroad on the south end. Observe the railroad east and west to see if a train is approaching. Do not land until the train has passed the runway. If landing runway 17, watch for cars on the road.
If you plan on flying, give Mel a call (972) 784-7544, and get the airfield condition report. Rain has an effect on parking. It is also helpful if you have any special requirements. Plus, we will know how many to expect.

Wow, what another great event! It was great because of all the people who came out, enjoyed some really good fish, wonderful entertainment, and just an overall good time. We estimated that we fed roughly 150 folks based on the number of paper plates we handed out.
We need to give a special "Thank You" to a number of individuals that made this all a really memorable event.
First, a big thank you is due to Mark Jaraczewski and the McKinney National Airport staff who always do their best to support our EAA Chapter activities. The line guys were in the maintenance hangar on Friday moving planes and cleaning up the place for us.
Second, we have to always extend another big thanks to the Ackerman's and volunteers that cooked. This was their 15th year to actually oversee coordination and actual preparation of the food. For those that don't know the Ackerman's, they were the ones who were working away under the temporary shelter just outside the hangar cooking up all that fish and making sure everyone got fed. What a great job they did with the fish and sides once again this year.
We also need to give a huge thank you to the Dallas Banjo Band. This was their second year to come out to this event and entertain us all during the Fish Fry. They were great!!! I had a number of people come up to me and tell me how much they enjoyed listening to these folks play and how much it really added to our event.
Finally, we need to thank the volunteers that came out to help set up before and tear down/clean up after the event was done. We also appreciate all those members who provided the desserts.
Looking forward to next year already.

Hartzell buys Sky-TecBy Michael Stephan
On April 7th, Hartzell Engine Technologies LLC today announced the acquisition of the Sky-Tec brand of high-performance aircraft starters and solenoids.
Along with the acquisition of Plane Power alternators, Hartzell now has an extensive line products for general aviation consumers.
Rich Chiappe, of Sky-Tec, said of the sale of Sky-Tec to Hartzell, “My partners and I needed to be assured the brand would be cared for with the same honor and commitment we poured into it for over a quarter century allowing us to focus our attention entirely on bringing new products to market.”
Hartzell will continue to produce the Sky-Tec starter and solenoid products under the Sky-Tec brand and manufacturing will continue in the current factory in Granbury, Texas, though the end of 2016. It will then move to Hartzell’s Montgomery, Alabama facility.
So what are these new products that Sky-Tec
wants to bring to the market? It is an electronic ignition system called the SureFly for
certified aircraft. They will transition the Granbury facility once the starter business moves to Alabama. Knowing the popularity of their starters, I’m sure these will be popular as well. you can get more info at their new website: www.surefly.aero

North Texas aviation buffs will have the chance to see, touch and even FLY in many of the planes in the unparalleled Cavanaugh collection. The Cavanaugh Flight Museum will fly many of its treasured WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam-era airplanes including: the P-51 Mustang, AD-5 Skyraider, FM2 Wildcat, T-28B Trojan, P-40 Warhawk, and many more. Aviation fans can book personal flights at discounted rates in many of these historical planes. Flights start at just $75! Guests can enjoy aircraft on display plus a naval carrier aircraft operation demonstration and Sherman Tank demo. This year, the Cavanaugh is celebrating with a MASSIVE P-51 Mustang gathering. In addition to the collection's famed Brat III, Warbirds Over Addison will also host other Mustangs, including Buzzin' Cuzzin', Happy Jacks Go Buggy, Little Rebel, Millie G, Sweet and Lovely and Worry Bird. The P-51 is perhaps the best known fighter aircraft of all time. Designed in record time at the request of the British in 1940, the Mustang possessed a deadly combination of speed, endurance, maneuverability and firepower. By the end of the Mustang's production run, more than 15,000
P-51s had been built and the aircraft had seen service around the world as an escort fighter, fighter/bomber, dive bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and finally, a race plane. The Mustang has local roots, too! While production began initially in California, as demand grew, a plant was added in Grand Prairie to produce the famed fighter. The weekend showcases not only the extensive Cavanaugh collection, but also visiting aircraft brought in by warbird enthusiasts and museum collections around the country.
