The baseball team’s goal may be to win a national championship, but before it can do that it must first face off against Empire 8 Conference opponent St. John Fisher College.

Last year the Bombers posted a 14–4 record in conference play, but three of those losses came at the hands of St. John Fisher College. The Cardinals ended the season 2nd place in the conference behind the Bombers.

The Bombers have played well against the Cardinals at home, but had trouble with St. John Fisher while playing on the road. Af-ter sweeping them 16-2, 10-9 and 8-3 in their first weekend series at

Freeman Field, the Bombers traveled to Fisher’s Dugan Yard just two weeks later and were swept by the Cardinals 0-1, 5-6 and 0-4.

Though the Bombers field an experienced pitching staff, St. John Fisher returns junior Justin D’Amato, who has already been named the preseason Division III Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America. Last year, D’Amato started in Fisher’s 1-0 win against Ithaca, silencing the Bomber batting order by pitching a five-hit complete game shutout.

This year, both teams have started hot out of the gate. The Bombers have accrued a record of 8–4 with two wins over ranked teams early in the season. A 15–2 win over Bridgeport College on a neutral field has given the Blue and Gold an impressive victory that they will be looking to build off of as the season progresses.

The Cardinals are 7–2 so far this season. One of their losses came from nationally-ranked Aurora College while the other came at the hands of 13–1 Coe College.

Early in the year, both teams are putting up impressive numbers on offense and defense. The Cardinals and Bombers rank second and third respectively in Earned Run Average and boast preseason All-Americans on the pitching staff. On offense, the Blue and Gold rank first in the E8 in extra-base hits while Fisher ranks second in the category.

The matchup promises to be a battle between well-rounded teams and could very well deter-mine which squad takes home the conference title this season.

The Bombers will face St. John Fisher on April 20 and April 21 at Freeman Field.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALLvs. University of Rochester

On Sunday afternoon, the softball team will play its home-opening series with two games against the University of Rochester. Last season, the Yellowjackets defeated the Bombers with two heart-wrenching losses on the road.

In the first loss, Rochester scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and won a narrow 2-1 victory. The second loss stung even more. The Bombers led 5-1 heading into the final inning, and Rochester scored five runs to rally for the victory and steal the sweep from the Bombers.

This matchup has usually been highly contested, as only one run has decided the outcome in the previous five of six matchups between the teams.

The U of R squad returns last year’s sophomore starting pitch-ing duo, Brittany Grage and Sarah Wayson. It should be a pitching battle between Grage/Wayson and the Bombers’ junior Sam Bender. Look for another year featuring a tough doubleheader be-tween these two teams to open the season for the Bombers at Kostrinsky Field.

3MEN’S LACROSSE vs. Rochester Institute of Technology

With matchups against Nazareth College, Stevens Institute of Technology and SUNY-Cortland all tak-ing place on the road for the men’s lacrosse team, the Bombers will not be hosting their toughest conference opposition. The stron-gest team coming to Higgins Stadium this season will be the Rochester Institute of Technology on April 10.

The Tigers have won the last four games against the Bombers, including two playoff games. RIT enters the season ranked No. 6 by the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and have a strong defense led by seniors Elliott Cowburn and Evan Burley. Junior midfielder P.J. Hart is one of the nation’s best in faceoffs, winning more than 61 percent last season. RIT’s lead-ing midfield line of junior Taylor Wisman and sophomores Allister Warren and Kyle Aquin promises to be one of the more prolific mid-fields in the sport this year.

Like last year, RIT will be the last non-con-ference opponent the Bombers play. With a game at Nazareth five days before, the Bombers will have the chance to make a big impression on the region, as both Nazareth and RIT are ex-pected to be conference contenders.

5WOMEN’S LACROSSE

The women’s lacrosse team has an intense schedule this season with six of its opponents ranked in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association preseason poll. Fans can see some of the intense out-of-conference action in Higgins Stadium.

On Saturday, the Bombers will be hosting the No. 3 SUNY-Cortland Red Dragons. Last season, Cortland made it all the way to the NCAA Final Four before los-ing 7-5 to Trinity College.

Head Coach Shannon McHale said this South Hill squad has the potential to be a top contender for the na-tional championship. The Red Dragons will likely make

another run in the NCAAs with nine seniors leading the way, so this matchup will be a good test for the Blue and Gold.

Last year, the Bombers lost 17-6, but this season the squad will have three nationally ranked opponents prior to the Rt. 13 rivalry to help prepare them for some of the high-quality competition.

The 3rd-ranked Red Dragons have started off strong this season, going 4-1 in their first five games. On March 16, Cortland took on 6th-ranked College of New Jersey and pulled out a close 15-13 win. They also handed the Lions their first loss of the season. In the victory, senior midfielder Maria Di Fato became the third player in program history to reach 200 goals. She leads the Red Dragons in goals this season with 19.

The 15th-ranked Bombers split their first four games of the season with their only losses coming from top-10 teams. Senior attack Tracy Rivas leads the South Hill squad with 11 goals, nine assists, and 20 points. The Blue and Gold averaged 10.75 goals per game in their first four contests, while the Red Dragons averaged 14 in their first five. The Bombers will need to not only continue to buckle down on defense but also find the back of the net more frequently if they want to achieve the upset.

MATCHUPS

The biggest challenge for the men’s and women’s crew teams will come to them in the first of their 14 races this season as they take on rivals Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the Cayuga Duals. The matchup will take place on March 30 in Ithaca.

Hobart’s varsity boat will remain a challenge for the men’s team throughout the spring season. While the Bombers look ahead to winning states and medaling at ECACs, the men’s crew Head Coach Dan Robinson said Hobart, who beat them in head-to-head races dur-ing the fall, may spoil their plans. However, Robinson said he has a great deal of confidence in his athletes and said if his rowers think they can win, they will.

Women’s crew Head Coach Becky Robinson said the race against the William Smith Herons will be the most challenging of the season. The Herons had a very successful fall season, medaling at the Head of the Fish Regatta, performing well at the Head of the Charles Regatta, and finishing 1st at the Head of the Genesee. The Bombers’ home opener against William Smith will reveal how they compare to an-other strong group of rowers. Starting off the spring against this team will propel the women throughout the rest of their season.

The men’s crew for Hobart won the Liberty League last season and the Bombers men’s varsity eight took home gold in the state champi-onship last season.

The Herons women’s crew is always one of the top Liberty League squads and the Blue and Gold brings one of the E8’s top boats to the water.

Experience is everything for the Ithaca College baseball team as it looks for its second consecutive Empire 8 title and postseason berth.

Though they were crowned Empire 8 champions last season, the Bombers bowed out early from the NCAA tournament last year after losing two games to Farmingdale State College in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Junior outfielder Luke Stark said this season will be dif-ferent. He said the team is looking to rebound from the disappointment of early elimination from the tournament, and the combination of experience and high expectations will help the Bombers reach their ultimate goal of a na-tional championship at the end of the season.

“We had a lot of freshmen who played big roles in our success last year,” Stark said. “I think that having that young-er experience and also veteran experience will help us do well. We have high expectations for ourselves, which is what makes us capable of getting there and winning it all.

The Bombers had three freshmen start on the mound last year, including Empire 8 Rookie of the Year John Prendergast, who compiled a 2.81 earned run average and won eight out of his 12 starts. Overall, the pitching rotation put up an Empire 8 leading 3.02 ERA.

Senior pitcher Pat Lemmo, who recently received pre-season All-American honors, said he is confident that the pitchers will have an even better year than last. Lemmo said the return of relief pitcher Jasper Adams and the experience that the freshmen gained last year will make the pitching staff one of the best in the conference.

“Now that [the younger pitchers] have that experience under their belts and know what college pitching is like, we’re just going to be dominant,” Lemmo said. “We all work together, we all have different pitching styles and with Jasper coming back off of his injuries, it’s going to be a great year for our pitching.”

Pitching is not the team’s only strong suit. With a .964 fielding percentage last year, the defense backing

up the pitching is another strength for the Blue and Gold. Head Coach George Valesente said the team’s de-fense will be beneficial.

“We’re expecting up the middle to be very strong,” Valesente said. “We had very strong defense last year. Hopefully that can carry us through this year.”

Lemmo said this year’s defense has already separated it-self from last year because of the added depth in the lineup.

“Our team is so deep that anywhere you look, any of the players we have on the team, I would be confident to have as part of my defense or as part of the batting order,” Lemmo said.

Valesente said another key to the Bombers’ defense will be their speed, especially in the outfield. Along with Stark, sophomore Christian Brown and junior Andrew Turner will make up the starting outfield.

Team speed will also be beneficial for the Bombers’ of-fense. Stark, who started five games in the outfield last year, said the elevated speed will help the outfielders lessen the amount of extra-base hits over the course of the season.

“The outfield is very important, especially in college,” Stark said. “A lot of balls get hit to the gaps, and this year we have a very fast outfield, so we can cover those gaps and decrease the amount of hits that are put out there. That’s going to play a big part in our success.”

Valesente said the team’s biggest uncertainty is its of-fense. He said the team’s ability to produce enough runs to support the stout pitching and the defense will determine much of the its success as the year progresses.

“The players we graduated were big time contributors offensively,” Valesente said. “I think we are going to be very solid defensively, but the question is whether we are going to be able to swing the bats as well as we’d like to.”

After earning the top spot in the Empire 8 preseason poll, Turner said the team has the potential to have another successful season because of the pieces they have in place.

“The talent is there, we just have to go out and physically do it,” Turner said. “We have experience, and we know what to expect. We know what we need to do and how to do it.”

Last year’s softball team was built on youth and a strong focus on the fundamentals. The team is return-ing all nine starters, who will now have an additional year of experience under their belts and are looking to add another championship to their resume.

Finishing with a record of 32–14 in 2012, the squad has received multiple accolades, including their eighth Empire 8 conference championship in 11 seasons, a 25th trip to the NCAA regionals and a 4-3 victory over Division I Cornell University in an intercity matchup.

The Bombers enter the season ranked on top of the Empire 8 conference and ranked 21st in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll.

Head Coach Deb Pallozzi, who was inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2012, is entering her 25th year as head coach of the Bombers. Pallozzi said this team has a variety of talent but that keeping the fielding and hit-ting fundamentals will be crucial to the team’s continued success.

“This season, if we can play smart and communicate well with one anoth-er on the field, we can have a fun and successful season,” Pallozzi said. “When we play well and do the little things right, they tend to have a lot of fun, which makes each game enjoyable.”

In the pitching circle this season, the Bombers will look toward junior Sam Bender, who finished last sea-son with an 18–6 record and a 2.13 earned run average. Bender is the most experienced pitcher on the team, as the Bombers will have three freshman pitchers to complement Bender in the circle.

As a freshman, Bender followed in the footsteps of

Britt Lillie ’11, who was a starting pitcher during the 2011 season. She said that it is now her turn to lead three freshmen pitchers while taking on the role as the ace starter for the Bombers.

Bender said the 2012 season helped prepare for the role as the ace because of the pressure situations she has faced as a starter.

“I know last year I split time with Jill [Olmstead], but knowing that my teammates were counting on me ev-ery time I was pitching helped me learn how to handle

pressure and different game situa-tions,” Bender said.

All nine starters are returning with NCAA Regional experience. The Bombers top three hitters, senior Molly O’Donnell, junior Sydney Folk and sophomore Francesca Busa com-bined to hit for an average of .371, and Folk led the Bombers in average at .414 to go with a team-high of five home runs and 41 RBIs.

Folk said she enters this season more focused than ever because she knows the potential her team has en-tering the season.

“Everybody on this team has a role to play,” Folk said. “We have a lot of dif-ferent personalities on this team, but

when everybody does their job and communicates the way we’re supposed to, it’s going to be a good season.”

Folk said the season’s opening games should be a tough test against other nationally ranked teams and also that her team is ready to leave the enclosures of the Athletics and Events Center and play games outside in the sun.

“The first set of games are always a test for us,” Folk said. “There are a lot of good teams there, but we’re a good team too, so hopefully that’s the way we play all season.”

Spring Sports Preview6 The Ithacan Thursday, March 21, 2013

Getting acquainted The Ithacan’s beat writers give you the inside scoop on the other seven sports teams competing this season.

The men’s tennis team is looking to bounce back after a tough season last year. The Bombers fin-ished 7–9 overall, but a 5–2 conference record was good enough for 2nd place in the Empire 8. The team lost to the Stevens Institute of Technology during the Empire 8 Championship for the third straight season.

This year the team looks to excel past that. The team brought back two of its best players, sopho-more Justin Levine and junior Griffin Reid. Reid earned First Team All-Empire 8 honors last year and Levine was on the second team.

Dave Andersen is also a player to watch on the No. 1 doubles team. Head Coach Bill Austin said these three will be embracing a leadership role on a younger team with five freshmen. Because of an in-jury, they are without senior captain Kyle Riether,

which will take away some leadership and talent from a solid roster. He is expected to return in late March or early April.

During the fall, the team posted an impressive 6-3 victory over the Tigers of Rochester Institute of Technology as well as several singles wins in the St. Lawrence tournament.

The team has gotten off to a slow start this spring, losing its first four matches during its spring break tournament in Hilton Head, S.C. Their next home match will be at 4 p.m. March 27 at Glazer Arena.

— Matt Constas

MEN’S TENNIS

Head coaches Dan and Becky Robinson seem confident in their rowers’ abilities to win big races because of the hard work they’ve put in during the longest part of the season, the winter, and experience from last season. With both teams only losing a few seniors last spring, the Bombers have a great deal of potential, rowing with many of the same athletes as they did last season.

Senior coxswain Allison Carter said the new boathouse on the inlet has contributed to increased camaraderie and is help-ing the teams workout more efficiently.

Both teams are ready to get back out on the water in the coming weeks despite frigid temperatures and unpredictable

weather. However, the teams have been able to spend some time in the sunshine during the crew teams’ annual training trip to Gainesville, Ga., over spring break. The trip to Gainesville pre-pared the men and women to get back out on the water for a final two weeks before they have to race.

The men’s first varsity boat raced against Division-I University of North Carolina and lost by just three sec-onds. In the first varsity four, the teams raced against UNC and Marietta College and finished in third place out.

The squads will be taking to the water March 30 in Ithaca for the Cayuga Duals against Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

MEN’S & WOMEN’S CREW

— Karly Redpath

The women’s lacrosse team has high hopes for this season as the ma-jority of their starting roster returns to the turf, including the five players who earned All-Empire 8 recognition last season.

Head Coach Shannon McHale is back for her second year with the Blue and Gold and will lead a team featuring seven stellar seniors and nine freshman. The Class of 2013 includes E8 Player of the Year Tracy Rivas, E8 Goalie of the Year Jess Worthman and a number of other important con-tributors from last year’s team.

The Bombers finished the 2012 campaign with a 13–4 overall record, went undefeated in regular season conference play and earned a No. 1 seed for the E8 tournament.

The squad was on a 10 game win-streak when they reached the conference final before losing 9-7 to St. John Fisher.

The Blue and Gold’s biggest hole to fill will be on the attack with Nicole Borisenok ’12. Borisenok was 2nd on the team in offensive stats with 41 goals, 16 assists and 57 points.

The South Hill squad’s defense should be sol-id once again with Worthman back between the pipes. Last year, Worthman finished the year 13th in the nation with a goals-against average of 7.68.

— Danielle D’Avanzo

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Both the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams are coming off New York State Collegiate Track Conference Indoor Championship wins this winter, promising a strong 2013 track season. The women will have Head Coach Jennifer Potter at the helm again this season, who led the women’s team to an Eastern College Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship last year. She has recruited the help of multiple assistant coaches, including former heptathlete Emma Dewart ’12, a three-time school record holder.

Despite the tough losses of Dewart and thrower Jessica Hoeffner ’12, the Blue and Gold will welcome

back sophomore sprinter Harmony Graves and se-nior thrower and co-captain Amanda Rissmeyer.

The men’s track and field team will strive to show consistency from the winter season to the spring season by bringing home an outdoor state championship. Head Coach Jim Nichols will coach the Bombers’ squad for the 27th season. Seniors David Geary, Brian Maley and Alec Svoboda will roll over from indoor to outdoor track as captains of the South Hill squad. The team will take a hit from the losses of Dan Craighead ’12 and Jusan Hamilton ’12, but stay well-rounded with the return of Geary and senior distance runner Nathan Bickell.

MEN’S & WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

— Haley Costello

The men’s lacrosse team returns 20 letter winners to a team that reached the Empire 8 Championship game. The team’s attack will be led by sophomore James Manilla and junior Pat Slawta. Slawta led the Bombers in points with 45 and was named to the All-Empire 8 second team. The attack as a unit loses leading goal scorer Tom Mongelli and was seventh in the Empire 8 in goals per game.

Sophomore midfielder Matt Greenblatt and ju-nior midfielder Brandon Henne will be the Blue and Gold’s primary faceoff men with both splitting faceoff attempts.

The midfield is an inexperienced group with Connor Lowe being the only senior at the posi-tion. With Brendan Green having graduated and sophomores Mac Davis and Joseph Fletcher not

playing this season, the Bombers will have senior Andrew Landsman and freshman Scott Sidnam as their options in the cage. The South Hill Squad’s greatest strength is in its experienced defense. A unit that gave up the fewest goals per game in the Empire 8 returns with its anchor in senior Marc Roberts, an All-Empire 8 first team selection.

The team has started the year out 4–0 entering the top-20 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association rankings, and its next home game is March 29 against Potsdam at Higgins Stadium.
