F ield Day was held on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles. There was alot of fun and excitement going on throughout the day. The weather was hot and sunny which seemed to add to gener- al glow of the day. San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden Summer Programs.Saturday in the Garden - June 14th, July 12, August 9th from1:00-4:00 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden.Families are invited to come learn something new each monthof the year. State Ambassadors(continued from page 1) Evan Courter in 1997.Brandon and Nakia have received this recognitionfor their outstanding accomplishments in leader-ship and citizenship demonstrated by their serviceto their community and others through 4-H. N&V: Why did you apply for State Ambassador?NW: I applied forstate ambassadorbecause I enjoyedworking at thecounty level andwanted to seewhat it would belike working at thestate level.BE: I appliedbecause I felt itwas a good way togive back to agreat organization.N&V: What wasthe interview pro-cess like? Howdid you prepare for it?NW: The interview process was a lot of fun Ibasically prepared for the interview by answeringthe questions on the application and just beingmyself.BE: The interview was a little difficult because ofthe questions but I survived. With three interview-ers it was a little bit intimidating. I prepared byreading my application.N&V: How did you feel after the interview?NW: After the interview I felt like it went well and Ihoped that I would see all my new friends again asState Ambassadors.BE: After the interview I felt relieved.N&V: How did you feel when you found out thatyou would be a part of the 2003 - 2004 StateAmbassador Team?NW: When I found out that I would be a part ofthe 2003-2004 State Ambassador team I was veryexcited and proud to represent my county.BE: I was ecstatic and very pleased to see Nakiamade it too.N&V: What are some of the State Ambassadoractivities?NW: Some of the State Ambassador activities are

to provide leadership in the development of theYouth Leadership Summit and the 4-H StateLeadership Conference, and to support the mis-sion and direction of the California YouthDevelopment Program. State Ambassadors alsoassist in the development of innovative programsthrough a service project.BE: Yeah, we have an orientation that we go toand we will have a service project.N&V: What are some of the State Ambassadorresponsibilities at the County level? State level?NW: The responsibilities of a State Ambassadorare to support various local, sectional andstatewide programs and activities; including publicpresentations, leadership development opportuni-ties and community service.BE: We attend events and promote 4-H, we willalso help in planning next year’s state conference.N&V: What do you hope to learn as a StateAmbassador?NW: As a State Ambassador I hope to expand myknowledge as a leader and role model. I hope tolearn how 4-H operates on a state level.

BE: I hope tolearn ways toreach a largenumber of peopleeffectivelyN&V: Do youhave any personalgoals as a StateAmbassador?Name one.NW: My hopes fornext year are tosucceed in all myresponsibilities asa California 4-HState

Ambassador. I would not be at this level of growthwithout each year of hard work that I put intomyself and 4-H. As I am nearing the end of my 4-Hcareer I hope to make these last few years as fullof personal accomplishments as I can. I knew Iwas qualified to be a State Ambassador, so I fig-ured it wouldn't hurt to apply and see if I couldmake it. Well, here I am and I hope the next yearwill bring many new lessons and memories to mylife.BE: I hope to promote 4-H effectively.

4-H Membership Fees Update!

The California 4-H Youth DevelopmentProgram fees for Program Year 2003-2004will be: $6.00 for members and $3.50 foradult volunteers. There will no longer be asupplemental fee for members or adultvolunteers in Horse projects. This feeschedule becomes effective as of 07/01/03.

Now is your chance tohave that deserving person(s) be put in thespotlight. The Community Service ProgramDevelopment Committee is acceptingnominations for the San Luis Obispo County4-H Community Service Recognition Award.

The categories for this award are:

It is a simple two step process, all you needto do is write a cover sheet with your name,phone number, club and your nominee’sname, phone number and club. Then, writea letter that does not include your name oryour nominee’s name, explaining why youfeel that your nominee has gone the extramile in Community Service. These letterswill be presented anonymously to a panel ofindependent judges, who will decide thewinner for each category. The awards willbe presented at Achievement Night onOctober 25, 2003.

Estero/Morro Bay members Adelyn Fearsand Hayley Borchard received Gold

Awards and Brooke Borchard received aSilver award for their community serviceefforts.

Afew of the activities that these membersparticipated in are: pet care bags for the

elderly, St. Judes Ranch Card project, assist-ed in making Thanksgiving dinner for MorroBay Seniors, sang for the Morro Bay Seniors,Beach Clean up, food drive for SalvationArmy, worked with the Rotary to preparebags for Organ Donation Awareness, deliv-ered stuffed toys to children with the MorroBay Police Department.

One person can make a dif-ference in a big way. The

abundance of kindness, youhave shown to your communitywill carry on indefinitely.

The All Star rank is the highest rank whicha member may attain; it provides an oppor-tunity for older members to receive recogni-tion for outstanding service. The All Starsserve as ambassadors for the county 4-Hprogram; they represent 4-H at county,regional and state activities; they coordi-nate certain county-wide activities; and theyserve as a positive role model for youthand adults. To be eligible for the All Starrank, a member must:

★ Be 14 years of age or older by January1 of the current year, but not 19 prior to January 1.

★ Completed three or more years of 4-H work as of July 1 of the current year.

★ Have attained the Gold Star rank by May 15 of the current year.

★ Demonstrate leadership abilities, citizenship concern and maturity of judgement.

Each candidate for the All Star rank will berequired to submit an All Star applicationand participate in an interview. All Star

applications may be obtained from the 4-HOffice, you can call 781-5943 and request

information to be mailed to you.Applications are DUE

in the 4-H Office before or on August 15, 2003.

Show Events . Pre-qualifica-tion is necessary for all showevents: Gymkhana, English,and Western.

Educational Events . Noqualification is necessary forparticipation in the educa-tional events. Visibility Director - responsible for providing leadership to and managingthe visibility and public relations efforts of the 4-HYouth Development Program inSan Luis Obispo County. Thisposition starts July 1, 2003.Applicants should be interested inassisting in the ongoing development of the 4-H Program.
