IP Ethernet SynchronizationUnlike TDM networks, Ethernet does not carry synchronization information. Several means are defined to address this issue:

Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE)

SyncE uses the physical layer interface to pass timing from node to node in the same way timing is passed in SONET/SDH or T1/E1.

This gives telecom and wireless providers confidence that networks based on SyncE will be not only cost-effective, but also as highly reliable as SONET/SDH and T1/E1 based networks.

A common assumption is synchronization over Ethernet can be achieved merely by replacing the free-running crystal oscillator used for Ethernet Physical Layer Device (PHY) with a general purpose synchronization device: Phase Locked Loop(PLL).

IEEE1588 PTP Timing and Frequency

PTP system is a distributed, networked system consisting of a combination of PTP and non-PTP devices.

PTP devices include GrandMaster clocks, ordinary (slave) clocks, boundary clocks, end-to-end (residence time) or peer to peer transparent clocks, etc.

Non-PTP devices include bridges, routers, and other infrastructure devices.

PTP Multicast or Unicast communication model.

IEEE1588 Telecom profile: use only unicast mode.Slave-only clocks are allowed to make a request for unicast service from the master, by sending a PTP signaling message to the IP address of the selected PTP GrandMaster clock.

In Telecom mode unicast, GrandMaster redundancy is implemented by 1+1 redundant clock with same IP address.

One step or two steps (with follow-up) clock mode (linked to the precise timestamp)

PTP time is accuracy is degraded by asymmetry in the paths taken by event messages. Asymmetry is not detectable by PTP

PDV packet delay variation and traffic load influence the PTP time accuracy.

PTP event message must be sent in high priority.

US5Ge Input Modules

Frequency feedback monitoring principle:

The purpose of this behavior is to alarm the management center in case of significant frequency error.

A not protected 20 outputs and 20 feedback monitoring inputs card is available for the US5Ge. This module monitors 20 2.048MHz or E1 signals for frequency error.

This frequency error likely indicates a malfunction of the connected network elements(synchronization reference loss).

The alarming detection is based on a significant phase offset of the input signal relative to the local phase reference. The phase offset threshold is 1 µs. When this phase error is detected, the elapsed time since the start of the phase measurement is evaluated. Based on this time (t), four alarms can be activated : • df/f bigger than 1 10-8, if 0 ≤ t < 100s• df/f bigger than 1 10-9, if 100s ≤ t < 1000s• df/f bigger than 1 10-10, if 1000s ≤ t < 10000s• df/f bigger than 1 10-11, if 10000s ≤ t < 100000s

US5Ge Rate Select Output Card PRODUCT OVERVIEW

The US5Ge Rate Select card is an output card for the US5Ge synchronization supply unit.:• It generates 20 signals from 1 kHz to 54 MHz in RS422 formats;• The frequency of each output is independently programmable in 10 Hz increments. The US5Ge Rate Select are protected output cardsand can be installed by pair in any US5Ge protected shelf slots;• Easy connection of the outputs is provided by the Rate Select Module connection panel either directly to the balanced signals or after balanced to unbalanced conversion to a BNC connector.

Outputs redundancyWhen two cards are present in a pair of protected slots, only one of them (the master card) drives the output signal. Each output signal is phase synchronized on a 10 Hz reference signal sourced by the master card and available to its sister card. This way, when a switch of one card to the other occurs, the phase of the output signal is preserved. If the master card is shut down or took off the shelf, the two cards drive the outputs for a few cycles simultaneously so that the transition from one driver to the other runs smoothly and phase jump free.

Signal GenerationFirst a DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) – with the US5Ge reference clock as base for sampling – generates a frequency between 50 and 100 MHz. This frequency is chosen to be 1) an even multiple of the programmed output frequency, 2) the highest frequency possible. The DDS generated frequency is then divided by an even number to obtain the desired output frequency.

This special way of generating an output frequency has many advantages:• The use of the US5Ge reference clock assures to the output signal the same frequency stability as the US5Gee reference clock;• Dividing the DDS generated frequency by an even number gives near perfect duty cycle (near 50%) on the output;• Dividing the DDS high frequency output to generate the signal gives excellent jitter and phase noise performance. Actually, the more the signal is divided, the more phase noise is improved. Moreover, jitter performances are not degraded for low frequency output as usually found on other wideband frequency generators.

Card Overview

The US5G PTP redundant card is designed to be a very stable Grandmaster clock. It can synchronize with the IEEE-1588 (1588-2008 also known as PTPv2) protocol the real-time clocks in the nodes of a distributed sys-tem that communicates using a network.

The US5G PTP redundant card is fully integrated in the US5G(e) system.

One or several cards can be plugged into the US5G main shelf. Each card occupies one POUT slot (Protected Outputs) of a shelf. Two cards can be installed in a POUT slots pair to perform as a protected pair. In this case, if the active card fails, its sister card takes the PTP interface control in a transparent way to the network. One or several pairs of cards can also be plugged into a US5G expansion shelf.

The card is based on a powerful CPU with dedicated Gigabit Ethernet LAN controller and large FPGA device for on the fly PTP packets timestamping at Gigabit speed. PTP timestamps clock is derived from the high stability US5G-US5Ge local clocks (Rubidium or OCXO quartz)..

The PTP interface utilizes Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules to support Gigabit optical interface on the front face. PTP card(s) provisioning and monitoring are under control of the US5G-US5Ge COM manage-ment card and thus separated from the PTP dedicated Ethernet interface.

A set of front face LED’s allow to quickly monitor the activity

GIGASYNCGigabit Ethernet SynchronizationPRODUCT OVERVIEW

The GIGASYNC allows the insertion or extraction of a timing signal on a Gigabit Ethernet link while maintaining transparency to data passing through the link.Typical configuration using a device to insert a timing signal and a second one to recover it.

The GIGASYNC distributes clocks by means of the physical layer in the sense that the frequency of the Ethernet bits is synchronized to the GIGASYNC reference. Idle characters deletion/insertion are used in order to compensate for input frequency (not synchronized) and output frequency (synchronized) differences.

In a GIGASYNC configured in insertion mode, the Ethernet bits arrived at a frequency f_in. These bits are stored in a small circular buffer from which they are extracted at frequency f_out (this is a frequency synchronized on the GIGASYNC reference). Then they are sent on the other Ethernet interface and we can say that the frequency is inserted on the outgoing Ethernet link at the physical level. The GIGASYNC avoids the buffer slips by inserting or deleting idle characters during the inter-packet gap. For example, if f_in > f_out, in order to avoid that the buffer becomes full, an idle character can be deleted. This results in slightly modified inter-packet gap duration and is of no consequences on the data transfer.

The GIGASYNC integrates clock insertion, clock recovery, serializer/deserializer, built-in self-test, 8B/10B codec and IEEE 802.3-2000 Gigabit Ethernet Physical Coding Sublayer(PCS) logic.

Receive FIFO compensates for differences in the clock tolerances, by inserting or deleting special 8B/10B IDLE characters in the IPG (Interpacket Gap).

TimeQMPPrecisely measures the accuracy of a wide range of classic and networktiming inputs against an internal precision GPS-controlled oscillator

Features• Measures and displays the difference between input time signal and UTC• Capable of measuring a wide variety of classic and network time signal inputs• Laboratory standard 1pps & 10MHz inputs can be used as time reference• Timing resolution of better than 1 nanosecond• Absolute accuracy of up to 50 nanoseconds to UTC• Automatic identification and analysis of Modulated Carrier Time codes• Full color touch-screen with user-friendly Windows- based operating system• USB port on front panel for easy access downloads for subsequent analysis of data• Input available for measurement of relay opening/closure• User-selectable threshold for alarm generation

TQMP is invaluable where time of day information is distributed from a central master clock to sub-master clocks or user systems over large distances via serial data links or packet networks.Substantial delays can occur due to high levels of network traffic or even due to the long distance between the master clock and the user. Some commercially available software algorithms can reduce these errors but, unless the errors are accurately and independently measured at the point to fuse, the user cannot be certain of the accuracy of his time source in this type of application.Additionally, the high accuracy of the TimeQMP means that it canal so precisely measure the time error of free-running clocks and timing systems which are synchronized from untraceable sources, such as television and radiobroadcasts, electrical power lines and via the internet.

High RELIABILITY

Examples

- Telefonica and other customers in field performance for 500 SDU: Amongst the 4,000 electronic subassemblies installed in the field, only 7 problems occurred since 1996 (The real measured in-field failure rate is 0,132 per 106 hours)

- France Telecom and Orange Mobile Branch more than 1000 SSU since 1994: There are in the field 25,000 electronic cards and each year we receive less than 50 cards to be repaired
