Stop colds before they start The stuffy nose, aches and pains that often accompany the common cold can leave sufferers feeling miserable for a week or more. Cold season seems to kick into high gear when the temperatures drop, but this can be the year you dont come down with a case of the sniffles. The following cold prevention tips can increase your chances of making it to spring without losing any days or sleep to the common cold. Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change into fresh outfits. Such precautionary measures can keep colds and other illnesses from running rampant through your house. Go outdoors and get some fresh air. Its a myth that cold air will bring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of congregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Dont be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you. Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and making it more capable of fending off colds. Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus can be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus travels on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get propelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as far away as possible and wash your hands frequently, paying special attention to your fingertips. Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles, and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business. Colds normally last between seven and 10 days. If your symptoms do not improve or if they seem to be worsening, visit your doctor.

SHEPHERDSTOWN Hospice of the Panhan-dles rst-ever Night at the Oscars, set for Friday, Feb. 20 at the Bavarian Inn, will feature a chance to spend a week at a premier home in Naples, FL, two 50-yard-line seats for a Baltimore Ravens game and four tickets for WVUs nal home bas-ketball game of the season. Proceeds from the event will support services at Hospice of the Panhandle, a 35-year-old not-for-pro t agency that cares for families and patients who su er life-limiting illness. Hospice serves Hampshire, Berkeley, Morgan and Je erson counties.

e event begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts until 10:30 p.m. e band, SV Jazz, out of Winchester, will play Big Band and show tunes throughout the evening. Well known auctioneer Marty Kable will serve as the auctioneer for live auction items. A limited amount of tickets remain available. Visibility is something many motorists take

for granted, especially during the day, when

sunlight tends to make drivers less cautious

than they might be at night. But as the National

Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes,

more traffic accidents occur during daylight

hours than at night, when headlights make ve-

hicles more visible to other motorists and more

pedestrians are walking around.

Though many drivers feel more comfortable

during daylight hours, pedestrians and oncom-

ing traffic are not always easy to see, especially

when weather and road conditions are unfavor-

able. Fortunately, there are easy ways for drivers

to improve their daytime visibility.

* Routinely check windshield washer fluid.

Some vehicles have just one reservoir for wind-

shield washer fluid, while others equipped

with a rear wiper typically have two. Locate

these reservoirs and make sure there is an ade-

quate amount of fluid in each, especially during

the winter and early spring months when snow

and debris such as sand or salt from the road-

ways can accumulate on the windshield and

make it difficult to see. If the reservoir is empty,

but you are out of windshield washer fluid, do

not use water as a replacement, as water can

freeze and cause damage to the reservoir and

hoses.

* Inspect wipers and replace the blades if they

are sacrificing visibility. Old or worn out wiper

blades can also negatively impact visibility. Ford

Motor Company recommends drivers inspect

their vehicles wiper blades at least once every

six months or as soon as they fail to clear your

windshield completely or leave streaks. Older

vehicles with pitting on the windshield tend

to be harder on wiper blades, so drivers who

have cars with some extra years under their belt

should inspect their blades more frequently.

* Clean interior glass and mirrors. Interior glass

can suffer from film buildup that can reduce a

drivers vision, especially during daytime hours

when such buildup can create a hazy reflection

from the sun. This film can be especially thick in

cars where drivers or their passengers routinely

smoke.

In addition to cleaning the interior glass, keep

the rearview and side mirrors clean and proper-

ly adjusted so your vision is not compromised

while driving. Drivers should be able to see

all of the views around the back of the car,

especially the blind spots along both sides

of the vehicle. When cleaning or adjusting the

rearview mirror, remove any trinkets or other

items hanging from the mirror. Such items might

add some personality or aesthetic appeal, but

they can also prove a significant distraction and

make it difficult for drivers to see the road.
