Throughout 2013, positive change continued at Milwaukee Christian Center (MCC).

First of all, we enjoyed one full year of having all programs, except site-based programs like the Violence Free Zone and the Youth Development Program, all under the same roof. We have benefitted from more collaboration amongst all programs.

MCC served over 8,536 individuals and families (unduplicated count) in the last year. People came through the doors of our new location and utilized programmatic services in a variety of ways.

New challenges arise daily. As an agency that has been around for 92 years, we stand ready to work towards finding solutions in partnership with others to creatively deal with what’s in front of us and the people we serve.

It’s a commitment to transformation, one day at a time, one person at a time. We see it in the people we serve. We also see it in our own lives as we are transformed.

Thanks for joining us in working to compassionately build a stronger community on the near South Side and beyond.

Message from our Leadership

MissionMCC believes all people deserve to be treated with compassion and respect. We exist to move people beyond the challenges of poverty through life-affirming programs and supportive services.

VisionMCC is a beacon of hope for the impoverished by compassionately guiding people out of poverty to create a community where suffering is alleviated, the inherent value of each person is cherished, and opportunities abound.

Our five day a week Emergency Food Pantry is available to residents of zip codes surrounding the neighborhood of Milwaukee Christian Center. We are the only pantry in Milwaukee open five days a week. Twice a week supplemental commodity boxes for targeted elderly and eligible women with children are also distributed. We also provide diapers and formula to at-risk infants. Notably, the pantry provides culturally appropriate food to Hmong, Lao and Latino families – all while communicating in their native languages.

• In May of 2013, we became a Choice Pantry. Now clients choose what they take home.

• Hunger Task Force evaluated and ranked the pantry as the highest performing pantry in the City of Milwaukee in 2013.

• 12,463 individuals (duplicated) were served in 2013. One third of those served were children under the age of 18.

MCC provides two programs for youth who have committed minor offenses such as retail theft or truancy: the First Time Juvenile Offender Program (FTJOP) and the Community Service Options Program (CSOP). Both are designed to prevent future offenses by making young people more accountable for their behavior through case management services that include mentoring, tutoring, anger management classes, drug and alcohol education and life skills classes.

• In 2013, MCC’s FTJOP served 76 youth.

• 58 of those youth were successfully discharged.

• 22 youth improved attendance in school

• 26 youth improved their GPA’s

• CSOP served 151 youth; 65 successfully completed the program within their mandated court date.

In September of 2013 MCC added the Milwaukee Violence Free Zone (MVFZ) – a project that works to increase the attendance and GPAs of chronically disruptive youth while reducing the number of violent incidents/suspensions within five troubled schools of MPS.

• In 2013, VFZ served 345 youth.

• A staff of 27 provided mentoring, one-on-one academic support, conflict mediations, after school programming and leadership development for youth referred to the program throughout the year.

In 2013 MCC also added the PHAT Program – Promoting Health Among Teens. PHAT is an 8-week curriculum focused on giving young people the tools needed to navigate relationships with confidence and clarity of purpose, gaining an increased capacity to negotiate abstinence.

Youth that finish the program and show leadership potential are given the opportunity to become peer mentors.

• In 2013, 635 youth completed the program.

• PHAT hosted a design contest with Lincoln Center of the Arts Middle School. Students created artistic and thought provoking abstinence logos. The winning logo was printed on t-shirts and backpacks and distributed city-wide.

• 8 youth qualified to become peer mentors for future trainings.

Tyler is a student at

South Division High

School. Even though

he stands at 6’2, Tyler

seemed half his size

when he first met the

MVFZ staff. He walked

with his head down and did not interact with

other students or teachers. MVFZ leaders sensed

something was wrong and reached out to Tyler.

They got him involved with MVFZ programs,

events and student leadership, which included

involvement in governance council. Over time,

Tyler changed. He began to smile, socialize and

walk and talk with purpose.

At the end of the school year, Tyler met with the

MVFZ team to thank them. He shared that at

the time of his introduction to the program he

was considering committing suicide. Now, he

has a different outlook on life. Tyler is a happy,

confident student leader whose life has been

transformed by the MVFZ program.

Our Case Management Unit (CMU) provides case management and consulting services to older adult members of Milwaukee County’s Family Care Program. Nurses and case managers work with older adults to allow them to remain in the least restrictive environments and to help them remain vitally engaged members within their communities. Bi-lingual case managers are able to help Southeast Asian seniors access a wide range of services.

• In 2013, Family Care served, on average 126 members per month.

• Through a successful partnership with the UWM’s School of Social Work CMU utilized student interns for additional staff support.

The Senior Center is a welcoming space for older adults over the age of 60. Seniors learn, socialize and exercise while experiencing the transitions of aging. The Center specializes in providing Southeast Asian services – with bilingual staff providing translation, interpretation and case management services for Hmong and Lao seniors.

• The Senior Center had 102 participants in 2013; with new participants of various ethnic backgrounds.

• The average age of participants was 74.

• The seniors are a diverse group: 80% Hmong/Lao, 11% Latino, 5% Caucasion, 3% African American and 1% Native American

Senior ProgrammingTerry first came to MCC to request emergency food. By accident he wandered into the offices. Family Care Manager, Jennifer Taylor asked if he needed assistance. This unplanned interaction saved Terry’s life. Jennifer realized that Terry was in need of so much more than food.

She assigned him a case manager through the Family Care program and invited him to come for lunch in the Senior Center. His case manager connected him with doctors who discovered that he needed a liver transplant and got him on the waiting list.

Since coming to MCC and connecting to health providers, Terry has stopped consuming alcohol. Before coming to MCC, he spent countless hours alone in his home. Now, MCC is his daily destination for lunch, socialization and regular health screenings. His depression is in check and he is on the right path to improved health. His daily, 6 block walk to MCC is transforming Terry’s life.

Terry

Weekly health checks are keeping Terry on track!

MCC’s Neighborhood Improvement Project (NIP) assists City of Milwaukee homeowners with repairs, lead hazard reduction and window replacement. Funding comes from the City and is targeted at low income residents. Funding is also provided to build ramps or install lifts for individuals with mobility challenges. Graffiti removal services are also available for individuals, businesses and business improvement districts.

• In 2013, 17 low-income homeowners received home rehab services.

• 1 ramp was built.

• Graffiti was removed from 836 properties.

MCC’s Housing Production program provides affordable housing for first-time home buyers, building new homes on vacant lots and rehabilitating foreclosed properties for resale to qualifying buyers.

• In 2013, 4 houses were sold and 5 others were under construction.

MCC’s Adultbuild program provides hands-on job training to low-income City of Milwaukee adults interested in a construction career. While the program is currently suspended, MCC continues to explore ways to once more provide services to this population.

• In 2013, 8 participants received training.

MCC’s Youthbuild program provides hands-on job training for City of Milwaukee opportunity youth, ages 18-25. Members are paid while building houses and earning their GED. Members earn an AmeriCorps scholarship which can be used for continuing education.

• In 2013, 42 members were served.

Neighborhood Improvement Project

Yanairis (Yanii) moved to Milwaukee after dropping out of high school in Boston. Family members told her, “you’re just going to end up like your mother” – a single, unemployed mom. Moving to Milwaukee allowed her to make a fresh start.

A friend and member of YouthBuild Boston encouraged her to find a Youthbuild in Milwaukee. Since joining MCC’s Youthbuild, she has made tremendous strides. Despite the challenges that come with being a single mother in a new city, Yanii has truly taken advantage of all that the program has to offer. Her attendance, attitude, and work ethic have been exemplary. In fact, Yanii has become a quiet leader in the program and has set a tremendous example for the rest of the members.

Her hard work has paid off. Within a few short months, Yanii earned her GED and is now focused on a future career in nursing. She plans to enroll in Mount Mary University next fall. Yanii’s life is being transformed through her involvement with Youthbuild.
