Today we will again be studying the righteousness of Christ which comes to us on the basis of faith from:

Philippians 3:9

Page 16: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Imputed righteousness

Imparted righteousness

Page 17: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Philippians 3:9b “not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes

Page 18: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

from God on the basis of faith” Philippians 3:9 b

Page 19: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Heb 11:8“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he

Page 20: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

was going.9 By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same

Page 21: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

promise; (Hotel Earth) 10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” Hebrews 11:8-10

Page 22: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*A little faith (even the size of a mustard seed) will take your soul to Heaven.*Great faith will bring Heaven to your soul!*Allowing Him to live in you.

Page 23: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Faith involves more than mere intellectual assent to the truth of the Gospel; saving faith includes trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and surrender to His lordship.

Page 24: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

The old T & O: Trust and Obey (sing)*It is on the basis of faith alone that righteousness comes from God to repentant sinners.

Page 25: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Matthew 11:28-29 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and

Page 26: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”  Matthew 11:28-29

Give rest = justificationFind rest = sanctification

Page 27: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

RIGHTEOUSNESS

Impute – justification (give rest)Impart – sanctification (find rest)

Page 28: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Romans 8:29we are being “conformed to the image of His Son”

(an ongoing process occurring in the present)

Page 29: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Genesis 15:5-65  “ God took Abram outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And God said

Page 30: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

To him, “So shall your descendants be.” 6 Then Abram believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.” Genesis 15:5-6

Page 31: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*Righteousness is right standing with God and acceptance by Him.

Page 32: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*reckoned it to him…

*credited it to his account…

*imputed the righteousness of Christ to Abram…

Page 33: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*Not only did God impute the righteousness of Christ on us,

*He also imputed our sins on Christ.

Page 34: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Paul declared that God "made Him Who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

Page 35: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

1 Peter 2:24

24“ He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness”

Page 36: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*That repentant sinners have their sin imputed to Christ and His righteousness imputed to them is the heart of the Gospel.

Page 37: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

This righteousness of Christ and its relationship to the recipient can be likened to legal adoption and to legal marriage.

Page 38: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Adoption legally constitutes a child to be the son or daughter of a person that is not that child's birth parent.

Page 39: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Similarly, in marriage the married partners are considered one entity legally.

Page 40: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

When a sinner believes in Christ, he or she is spiritually united with Christ, and that union makes it possible for God to credit believers with the righteousness of Christ.

Page 41: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

The imputation of Christ's righteousness is not an alternative to union with Christ, but the result of it.

Page 42: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*The word “impute” means “to pass to one’s account”.

*It means that Jesus places His righteousness upon our record when we trust upon Him for salvation.

Page 43: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Romans 4:1-3  1 “What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? 2 For if Abraham was justified by

Page 44: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT

Page 45: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

*What a beautiful truth!

Page 46: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*Abraham was not saved by good works; but rather, he believed God (faith) and was saved by Christ’s righteousness.

Page 47: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*Christ’s perfection was imputed (placed) on Abraham’s record in Heaven.

Page 48: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*God the Father viewed Abraham thereafter ashaving the righteousness of Christ.

*Hallelujah what a Savior!

Page 49: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Romans 4:4-12 4“Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.

Page 50: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him Who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,

Page 51: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

Page 52: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

7 “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.

Page 53: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

8 “BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT  TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.”

Page 54: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

9 Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Page 55: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

10 How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;

Page 56: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all

Page 57: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who

Page 58: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.” Rom 4:1-12

Page 59: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Romans 4:22-25 22 “Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23 Now not for his sake only was it written that it was

Page 60: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

credited to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,

Page 61: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

25 He Who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.” Romans 4:22-25

Page 62: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

So imputed righteousness has t do with our justification.

Page 63: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

David J. StewartThe Imputed Righteousness of Jesus Christ

Page 64: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*Jesus paid the price for mankind's sins. *You see, Abraham could not please God in his own self-righteousness, nor can we.

Page 65: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*No matter how much good we may do here on earth, our sins are still recorded in Heaven. *Our sins must be dealt with.

Page 66: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

This is why Jesus came to earth to pay the price for our sins with His own precious blood.

Page 67: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

1 Peter 1:18-1918  “ knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your

Page 68: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a Lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” 1 Peter 1:18-19

Page 69: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

22 “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Hebrews 9:22

Page 70: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*All mankind is corrupt and destitute of God. *Even in our sincerest efforts (Saul), humanity is tarnished with the curse of sin and rebellion.

Page 71: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*We need HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ. *We are saved by Jesus' righteousness through faith.

Page 72: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

“And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was IMPUTED unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God” (James 2:23). Don’t you like to be called the friend of God?

Page 73: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*It is not our obedience that makes us righteous, but the obedience of Christ.*His righteousness and His obedience makes it possible for us to be God’s friend.

Page 74: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*A mysterious transaction takes place the moment we believe. *The impeccable law-keeping and merit of Christ is transferred to us as if it

Page 75: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

were our own.

*And so we hear of being sinful in state but righteous in standing.

Page 76: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*We are the unrighteous in condition but the righteous in position.

Page 77: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Ephesians 2:6

6 “God raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus”(our position)

Page 78: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

There is a difference between the righteousness that we have by justification (given rest) and the righteousness that we have by sanctification (find rest).

Page 79: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

We can distinguish between the righteousness of the start and the righteousness of the end, between the ‘righteousness of faith' and the ‘righteousness of life.'

Page 80: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Justification(spirit) – past

Sanctification(soul)–present (soul = mind, will, emotions)

Glorification(body) - future

Page 81: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

6  “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

Page 82: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

There are three great imputations in the Bible:1)Of guilt – Adam’s sin to those Adam represented.2)Of sin – our sin to Christ Who represented His people.

Page 83: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

3)Of righteousness – Christ’s righteousness to all He represented.

*That would be us!

Page 84: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

IMPART1)to give, convey, or grant  2)to communicate the knowledge of: to disclose 3)to bestow, to transmit4)to cause a transformation

Page 85: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

PARTICIPATE(1)To take part or to have a part; to partake  (2)to possess some of the attributes of a person, thing, or quality

Page 86: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

impart partake participate

Page 87: 02 February 12, 2012 Philippians, Chapter 3, Verse 9

*Imputed righteousness –you have no participation in the event.*Imparted righteousness – you do participate in the process.

Romans 1:11

11) “for I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established”
