Happy birthday to Bong Pagutayao! From Filipino Panorama, Melissa (owner of Bahay Kubo Restaurant inSalmiya), Berny, Bong, Yvette, Jean and all of the FCC family!

Greetings

By Raymond L. Hernandez, PHR

My latest trip back to my home country, the Philippines, felt like Iwas not only going home for good but for better. It turned outto be a life changing moment.

When I was told on the afternoon of December 18th that I can arrangemy trip back home it felt exactly how I felt when I was told in a financialliteracy course I attended that as an OFW you are only as good as whatyou save. So there goes the feeling of of panic and then ecstasy. Butmostly panic. All foreign workers understand the agony of traveling dur-ing this season. The demand for air, sea and land travel and hotels just fuelthe prices to skyrocket to unbelievable levels.

In the end, years of service and savings (18 years for me) will all fit into40 kilograms of luggage and a plane ride. But who cares if the prices dou-ble or triple, I have not been home regularly and there is that certainmagic about spending the holidays in the Philippines. We all know how itfeels and cannot put them into words.

But is it just about material things we can bring with us when we all gohome for good? Or for better? My recent trip proved that there is more toan OFW than financial assistance or pasalubong. There is another truth tomy recent trip. You and I can always give more. This trip to my once sleepytown of Malaybalay, where I was born and raised is somewhat differentfor me. It is not only the physical changes that this little Baguio of thesouth, that has caught up with time but I think so is its people and itsadaptability. Malaybalay seems to have lost its rustic and rural charm, where everybody knows just about everybody. .Just how small it was, isaptly described by this quote, ‘ the town is so small, when you do notknow what you are doing, someone else does’

But thanks to social media, the City in the Forest may now boast of fastfood chains, a mini mall, a growing population and burgeoning educa-tional institutions but everyone still minds everybody’s business.

For a balikbayan, I think it is a good thing. It is easy to get into the sys-tem of things; you know what’s in or who’s taken.

I posted pictures on my social media accounts and posted on time-lines of friends. It was a good opportunity to spread good vibes, so tospeak, to friends around the globe. I get mostly positive responses butnever did I know that the biggest surprise would come from the socialmedia friends based in my hometown. Many of them, I have never met inperson. Through my facebook post, I soon got an invite to speak to stu-dents of my college Alma Mater, Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro City.I shared my experience as a competitive speaker in ToastmastersInternational. The workshop on impromptu speaking was well received. Iam amazed by the talent and skills of these very young public speakers. They all laughed when I said, this building did not exist when I graduated, nor probably did your parents meet.

The experience taught me the fundamental truth in life, things hap-pen for a reason. My years of involvement in the Toastmasters program asa leader and contestant finally revealed it’s greatest gift. By sharing what Ihave learned, I have helped create other leaders in the community, nomatter which place it brought me. Especially at a place called home.

A few days later I got invited to judge a beauty and talent competitionat the school where I finished primary and secondary school. I am in aweas to how local talents live up to global standards. There’s entertainment

Home to give more: Continuing the ‘Magis’value to what they showcase. I invited the leaders and participants for atalk at a popular franchise brand. I opened up my talk by saying, ‘ I amfeeding you, so you will listen to me’. I could feel how they were feelingwhen I was their age. They are very young student leaders, ambitious yetwith a care free spirit. Many asked questions how I chased for my dreamsor how I have achieved things.

And it dawned on me, I have gone so far. Again, everything happensfor a reason. I was brought to a certain place and time to be able to talkto young people and meet the future leaders of tomorrow because of mypain and struggles as an OFW. Without my experiences as an overseasworker, I could not possibly give a sound advice or have credibility or sin-cerity. More than inspiring others, I achieved my own sense of purpose,my sense of self-actualization.

A day before I left for Manila en route to Kuwait, I was invited to do aworkshop on ‘Delivering Powerful Speeches, Speaking for Results’ to postgraduate Business Management students at Xavier University. Posts andcomments on my facebook and Instagram posts about my previousworkshops were seen by my former Accountancy teacher VirginiaLourdes C. Yacapin. She eventually served as Dean of School of BusinessManagement for along time and now coordinates the university’sAlumni Affairs. The workshop experience boosted my own confidenceand then I learned the most powerful word I have been looking for.Magis, ‘to do more’. When I was handed the Certificate of Appreciation, itwas a realization that I have been blessed with things that not many cando, and not many can probably give, or willing to give more.

My facebook posts did not limit to the workshops or talks or times Ihave shared with the local community. I also traveled and discovered theamazing natural wonders and historical significance of Cebu, CamiguinIsland, Davao, Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro. I shared my thoughts andphotos on family and class reunions, weddings and baptismal parties.. I

also treated myself to a gastronomic feast of tropical fruits and delicacies. But it was the time I spent with our kababayans, the interaction with

each and every one of them that brought me to a certain point of realiza-tion. There is more to us than the 40 kilogram of baggage we bringhome. We can always share our experiences and touch the lives of others. We may not inspire all, but is it not a blessing if we inspire just one?

Today, I still get messages of thanks for my talks and inspiring stories.A number would message me seeking for advise about life and love andfuture career plans. It is a heartwarming feeling. It is true, never underes-timate the power of your words or kindness, it can always change andcreate leaders. Now, the plans for the future are bright. It will not be diffi-cult for me to re-integrate in the ever changing local community that Icall home. Good options are at hand - join the academe, pursueadvanced studies, a career in politics? Or a career in training and humandevelopment and public speaking.

Thank you to social media, the power of magis is set to continue. I came back to Kuwait after almost 8 weeks in the country I call home.

The 20 kilograms of luggage back to Kuwait is a testament that I got backlighter. But I came back after giving more at a place that will always waitfor me, the place we all call home.

Someday, you and I will make that last plane ride back to thePhilippines. A few of our kababayans already returned home in a box. Incase you need to know, you are what you save. And there is always some-thing that you can give to your community. Only if you put your experi-ences to good use and that and you are willing to give more. You mightwant to visit your old school or speak to a local community.

That’s magis. (Author is a Professional in Human Resources, Food Safety Manager,

Skills Trainer, Public Speaking Coach and a proud leader of ToastmastersInternational)

The report added that Espina as the “senior com-mander” should have been informed about the planningand execution of Oplan Exodus in accordance with thefundamental doctrine of the national police that requiresstrict adherence to the chain of command.

“Such manual provides that it’s only in urgent situa-tion when intermediate commanders may be bypassed. In such instances that intermediate commanders shouldbe notified of the context of order as soon as possible byboth the commanders issuing the order and the com-mander receiving it,” it said. The report added that underOplan Exodus, the chain of command in the PNP shouldhave been the OIC of PNP, Deputy Director GeneralLeonardo Espina as the senior commander and Napenasas the intermediate commander.

The report’s executive summary said Oplan Exodus, which was launched to serve arrest warrants againstinternational terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan andbomb-maker Abdul Basit Usman, “[could] never be exe-cuted effectively.”

The PNP-BOI primarily blamed the PNP’s lack of coor-dination with the military and “the peace mechanismentities” for the tragic outcome of the mission. It said thetime-on-target coordination, which was planned byNape?as “[did] not conform to the established andacceptable operational concepts and protocols of thePNP.”

“[Time on target or TOT] is applicable only to ordinarypolice operations,” according to the board. “Even AFP[Amed Forces of the Philippines] commanders assertedthat the TOT concept is alien to the Armed Forces and

runs counter to their established SOPs.” “It appears thatNape?as’ primary consideration for adopting the TOT con-cept was operational security to reduce the risk of havingOplan Exodus compromised,” the PNP-BOI said. Thereport said that when President Aquino directed Purisimaand Nape?as to coordinate the operation with the mili-tary, the now sacked SAF commander raised the concernthat the AFP might be compromised as some soldiershave intermarried with the locals.

The PNP-BOI report also took note of defective equip-ment used by the SAF troops during the mission.

“Some of the ordnance for M203 were defective.Although there were sufficient rounds of ammunition foreach operating troop, the overwhelming strength of theenemy caused the troops to run out of ammunition,” itsaid. The probers also noted that the hand-held radioswere not designed for military use and “failed when sub-merged in water.” It also ran out of battery life “because ofwear and tear.” Malaca?ang said Purisima’s perceivedcloseness to the President will not save him from hisinvolvement in the Mamasapano incident.

According to its deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte, the President maintains his position that charges will befiled against anyone based on evidence.

“The President has always been clear. We will followwhere the evidence leads us. And so far, we don’t seeany reason anybody could escape liability based onwhat other people say. But, again, it really should bebased on evidence, which is why, in the first place, the[PNP-BOI] was called or convened,” she said. Party-listrepresentatives Terry Ridon (Kabataan) and Walden Bello(Akbayan) said the report proved that Aquino is guilty ofa cover-up. —Manila Times

The Eagles won by just 1pin 891-890 and in the second game the friendly team retaliated and won thegame 913-870. In the final game with the high score of Glen Corbit (247) andDany Solis 191 overshadowed the scores of Jess Tolentino (187) and HammadYassen (173) that gave the Eagles a thumb up sign. Glen yielded a 628 points,Danny Solis (551), Alonzo Bush (501) with the assistance of Jessica Balagat andRiz Roque, while Jess Tolentino (520) and Aji Varghese (508) were the highestscorers with Norlan Balasan, Hammad Yassen and Josie Lorino.

Supposedly, one of the best match up of the day between Cozmo andOriginal Pin Killers best scoring machines was a nightmare when fast risingteam OPK played without its kingpin and caused its downfall from fifth to sev-enth position. With the uncontrollable victory of Cozmo with the score of2742-2338, it sustained the number two spot. The Cozmo 5-man team wereFahad Abul (585), Farid Gabriel (547), Jun Husmillo (524), Noe Mahayag (511)and Jacky Guitang (457) while the 4-man team of the depleted OPK teamwere Christopher Bush, Donovan Connor, Ishaaq Al Waahid and JelynColegio. Other results: Nusantara still gripping the last position when it servedas a dream wrecker for one of the challengers in his elite membership 2670-2592. For LEAF who controlled the striking force of Z’CLAS and posted a victo-ry did not change their respective position and finally the Master team, AllStar Strikers taught a lesson to his student (Velocity Wonders) 2989-2514 andbridge more gap with its paparazzi.
