Provide English language instruction to adult learners who are able to read and write in at least one language

Dear Students:

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to my High Beginning class at Lindsey Hopkins Technical

College. We can all look forward to a very productive and rewarding trimester. In order to provide all my

students with the excellent educational climate they deserve, I have developed the following Class Rules

that will be in effect at all times.

Classroom Rules:

� Join to Zoom class every day � Be on Time � Set up in as professional a space as possible � Dress for success � Bring your notebook, pen and pencil to class every day. � Use only your real name � Write present in Zoom chat � Be professional and respectful in your speech � Mute your microphone when you are not participating � No Side “Conversations” � Do not use phone in class, keep it on silent, if there is an emergency you can answer outside the virtual class � Good behavior is expected � Keep a coil notebook with your assigned work organized � If you finish your assigned work – Continue working on the next lesson � If you have time available, take advantage of practicing in the Burlington lab

Any fighting, rudeness, or other serious class disruption will result in immediate referral to a counselor and

disciplinary consequence.

It is in your very best interest that we work together with regard to your education. I will thus keep you

informed about your progress in my High Beginning class.

Placement criteria for ESOL II High Beginning ESL

Course Supplies

Every student is expected to arrive to class with the necessary materials and ready for learning. These include pens, pencils, and a notebook.

School Policy

OPEN ENTRY/OPEN EXIT:

This is an open-entry course which means that a student can enter the course at any time during a trimester, progress at his/her own rate, and withdraw whenever the course requirements have been completed. Many students successfully complete the course in one or two trimesters.

ATTENDANCE:

Students absent from class for six consecutive meetings are dropped automatically from class roll. However, excessive absences which interfere with academic progress may be grounds for disciplinary action.

TARDINESS:

Students displaying excessive tardiness may be referred to counseling. If they do not improve, they may be placed on probation and/or dropped from class. Tardiness and partial days of absences will be converted where applicable to full day absence.

School Attire:

Since the primary purpose of this institution is to prepare students for employment, while attending class, students are required to be neat and clean in appearance. Items of dress which are objectionable in the area of health and safety, noise, or items which may create classroom disturbances are prohibited.

GRADING POLICY

The grading system used for dual enrollment high school students and selected career/technical programs,

primarily those in the health science education areas, follows that of the Miami-Dade County Public School System.

A majority of the career/technical programs are competency based and use a variety of means to assess student

mastery of the program including competency checklists, written tests, performance tests and student portfolios.
