ROY Keane, above, is an early favourite to replace the sacked Seán O’Driscoll as manager of Nottingham Forest. Keane was at the City Ground yesterday as his old club beat Neil Warnock’s in-form Leeds 4-2. But Forest stunned their fans hours after the win — which moved them to within a point of the play-off zone — by sacking boss Seán O’Driscoll, who was appointed in July. A statement from Forest owners Abdulaziz Al Hasawi and Fawaz Al Hasawi said: “We are looking for an ambitious manager with Premier League experience. “The timing of our decision may look a little odd after the win over Leeds but sometimes you need to make changes with the long-term future in mind. “Sometimes those changes need to be made from a position of strength rather than weakness and that is what we are trying to do.” See Echo Sport. Queues as shoppers search for bargains By ALAN HEALY THERE were queues for the second day running outside some Cork shops today as the post-Christmas sales attracted huge numbers of shoppers in search of bargains. Many shops started their sales yesterday with some premises opening at 6am to cater for the demand. The sales continue today with many stores offering discounts of up to 70%. Manager of Brown Thomas, Caroline Counihan, said they opened at 9am on St Stephen’s Day and there were queues at all of their entrances. “This was the fourth year we started our sale on St Stephen’s Day and this year was certainly the busiest of them all,” the former president of the Cork Business As- sociation said. “Handbags, accessories and menswear have been particularly popular with shoppers.” It was a similar situation at Mahon Point Shopping Centre which also opened yester- day. Next opened for business at 6am and the shop manager there said there was a queue of customers waiting for bargains. “It was very busy. There was a great at- mosphere. Children’s wear was most popu- lar. The sale continues and we expect it to be very busy again,” they said. For many retailers the Christmas and winter sales accounts for a major portion of their annual sales and can be a critical period for retailers. See pages two and three for more.
