We mustwork tokeep citycleanLord Mayor in plea over litterCORK’S First Citizen hasurged people to worktogether to keep the cityclean.
His comments come in the wakeof the recent Irish Business AgainstLitter league report.
Cork has improved its ratingsunder the scheme and was awardeda rating of moderately littered inrecent years. However, the 2012 ear-marked issues with the city’s ap-proach roads.
The Lord Mayor, Cllr John But-timer, said: “Many of these roadsare busy with traffic being the mainaccess routes in and out of the city.
“There was an emphasis on food-related litter including coffee cups, plastic bottles, fast-food wrappersand sweet wrappers.
“In other cases, there was failureto cut back hedgerows and evidenceof household-dumping at severallocations.”
On the other hand, the LordMayor said many city centre loca-
tions received positive comments inthe league report — includingFitzgerald Park, Patrick Street andCornmarket Street.
He was full of praise for the coun-cil staff who were engaged in thetask of keeping the city presentable, saying they did “a fantastic job”.
The city council was also anxiousto include, encourage and promotecommunity involvement in keepingareas clean, he added.
“Active community participationis essential to the control of litter.Since 2007, the council has providedgrant assistance to resident associ-ations and community groups tosupport litter prevention or envir-onmental improvement schemes. The council has also delivered anumber of local litter action plansin areas across the city.
“We have come a long way and itis essential that we continue towork together to keep our city cleanand create healthy environmentsacross the city.”
