AC - V1 Monday, January 21 We must work to keep city clean Lord Mayor in plea over litter CORK’S First Citizen has urged people to work together to keep the city clean. His comments come in the wake of the recent Irish Business Against Litter league report. Cork has improved its ratings under the scheme and was awarded a rating of moderately littered in recent years. However, the 2012 ear- marked issues with the city’s ap- proach roads. The Lord Mayor, Cllr John But- timer, said: “Many of these roads are busy with traffic being the main access routes in and out of the city. “There was an emphasis on food- related litter including coffee cups, plastic bottles, fast-food wrappers and sweet wrappers. “In other cases, there was failure to cut back hedgerows and evidence of household-dumping at several locations.” On the other hand, the Lord Mayor said many city centre loca- tions received positive comments in the league report including Fitzgerald Park, Patrick Street and Cornmarket Street. He was full of praise for the coun- cil staff who were engaged in the task of keeping the city presentable, saying they did “a fantastic job”. The city council was also anxious to include, encourage and promote community involvement in keeping areas clean, he added. “Active community participation is essential to the control of litter. Since 2007, the council has provided grant assistance to resident associ- ations and community groups to support litter prevention or envir- onmental improvement schemes. The council has also delivered a number of local litter action plans in areas across the city. “We have come a long way and it is essential that we continue to work together to keep our city clean and create healthy environments across the city.” See page seven for more Pamela Ahern, Lehenaghmore, training with the medicine ball at the Éire Óg GAA pavilion for an upcoming boxing fund-raiser in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation.
