Healthy snacks with Year 6

Year 6 had a food treat with Mr Goldsmith this week! To kick start our Olympic theme, Year 6 went to the Food Technology room for an afternoon focused on healthy snacks. They made delicious fruit kebabs and tasty flapjacks. After Mr Goldsmith demonstrated how to prepare the food, Year 6 followed his techniques.

Once back in the classroom, they wrote up their afternoon. They included diagrams, sub-headings and technical language and described how the snacks linked in with our Olympic theme.

They also found out about the type of diets that top athletes need to follow. Thank you so much, Mr Goldsmith, for your help with this fun packed afternoon!

Reception 2 learn about Japan

Mr Sunayama came into Reception 2 to help us learn more about Japan. The children asked him lots of different questions mainly related to their own interests, such as ‘what is the fastest car in Japan?’ With the help of Kazuma, who was himself born in Tokyo, we learnt some Japanese like the way to say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’. Kazuma also showed us some of his Japanese children’s books. Mr Sunayama had told us about children’s day in Japan when it is the custom to make koinobori, traditional carp-shaped kites, to hang outside. We have made some of these in school. Mr Sunayama and Kazuma brought in lots of interesting Japanese things to show us including traditional spinning tops, Japanese newspapers and some little china animals. He has also kindly given us a pack of origami papers to try out our skills in this traditional Japanese craft. If you would like to find out some more about Japan come to our class to see our display. We also have all our names written in Japanese on our door!

Bristol Schools’ Primary Swimming Final 2012 Thirty-one schools competed this year and the swimmers did very well just getting through to the final. We had nine individual finalists.

Alysia Maestri is the new Bristol Schools’ 50m backstroke champion and she also came 2nd in the individual medley and 3rd in the 25m butterfly event. Charlotte Gardner and Charlie Turner came 5th in their events. Ben Badham, Georgia Silcocks, and George Denbow came 4th and Emily Doulton all came 2nd. The girls’ freestyle relay team and the medley team, Alysia Maestri, Sophia Webb, Georgia Silcocks, Isabel Creed, Charlotte Gardner, came 6th. Congratulations to all who participated so brilliantly.

Year 3 go to @Bristol As part of their Olympics theme, Year 3 explored @Bristol where they became scientists for the day. After a mind-bending morning of challenges and conundrums, they took a closer look at the human body using a very cool digital microscope—a truly disgusting experience!

After a healthy, well-balanced lunch, Year 3 met a neurology expert, who had them using their brains by thinking about working memory and how we can improve it. The children put all five senses to good use throughout the day!

Swimming success for Matt Bray Matt Bray from Year 11 concluded his swimming season in style by achieving success at the Regional Championships in Plymouth, representing Henleaze Swimming Club, over the Bank Holiday weekend. Matt won three gold medals in his events, which is a fantastic achievement. This success is evidence of his continued improvement in his swimming at Clifton High School and proof that his commitment to 5am starts in the pool is paying off! Congratulations Matt, we are extremely proud of you!

If your child is ill...

We would like to draw to your attention the NHS guidance on keeping your child off school.

Cough and cold. A child with a minor cough or cold may attend school. If the cold is accompanied by a raised temperature, shivers or drowsiness, the child should stay off school, visit the GP and return to school 24 hours after they start to feel better. If your child has a more severe and long-lasting cough, consult your GP. They can give guidance on whether the child should stay off school.

Raised temperature. If your child has a raised temperature, they shouldn't attend school. They can return 24 hours after they start to feel better.

Rash. Rashes can be the first sign of many infectious illnesses, such as chickenpox and measles. Children with these conditions shouldn't attend school. If your child has a rash, check with your GP or practice nurse before sending them to school.

Headache. A child with a minor headache doesn't usually need to be kept off school. If the headache is more severe or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as raised temperature or drowsiness, then keep the child off school and consult your GP.

Vomiting and diarrhea. Children with these conditions should be kept off school. They can return 48 hours after their symptoms disappear. Most cases of vomiting or diarrhea get better without treatment, but if symptoms persist, consult your GP.

Sore throat. A sore throat alone doesn't have to keep a child from school. If it's accompanied by a raised temperature, the child should stay at home.

We hope you find this information helpful and thank you for following the guidance in the interest of other’s wellbeing.

CHS Bee News We are delighted that the new hives and equipment have now arrived and we are now in the process of building two new bee hives. Our prize winners from Foundation Stage and Key Stage 2 were Bella and Georgia, who were able to tell Mr Cowper what 30lbs is in kilograms. Well done!
