Regulations and Things to NoteStudents are expected to be at all events unless officially excused by a faculty member.

STUDENTS MAY NOT LEAVE STETSON CAMPUS DURING THE WORKSHOP. This includes going out to eat with friends, parents or relatives. In the event of an emergency, students may leave campus with a chaperone that is approved by the workshop directors. Students who drive themselves to the workshop must relinquish their vehicle’s keys to the workshop coordinator on the first day of the workshop.

Students will be responsible for their personal belongings as well as materials used by the faculty. Students are also expected not to use/disturb the belongings of others without permission.

Smoking, alcoholic beverages, other chemical abuse, firearms, fireworks or explosive devises will not be allowed under any circumstances. Violators of this regulation will be immediately dismissed from the workshop at parental expense.

Any medical emergencies will be handled through West Volusia Memorial Hospital in DeLand. PARTICIPANTS MUST BRING THE ENCLOSED 2-page CONSENT FOR TREATMENT FORM TO REGISTRATION. THIS FORM MUST BE NOTARIZED. Your bank will generally do this for free.

There will be a $25 charge per lost key payable immediately upon checkout.

Students are expected to go nowhere alone and are to keep the directors or counselors advised of their whereabouts at all times.

All workshop attendees are expected to be at all rehearsals, classes, and performances as specified in their schedule.

Many students may be assigned to play Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Baritone saxophone in either a chamber group or one of the saxophone bands - even though it may be their “first experience” on that saxophone. These assignments are determined by the needs of the workshop and the Saxophone Workshop Faculty.

So everyone can have a great experience, students should turn cell phones or PDA’s off during all rehearsals & performances (including texting). Students may use these in between activities as needed.

Stetson’s public safety office is open 24 hours a day and the campus is patrolled on a regular basis. Security’s number is (386) 822-7300. In addition there are call boxes (identified by the blue lights) located at many points around campus for emergencies. Students are expected to exercise good judgment at all times and to look out for each other as well.

Members of the opposite sex, except parents, are not allowed in the dorm rooms. Visitors outside of the workshop are also not allowed in the dorm rooms without the consent of the workshop directors.

Please DO NOT bring expensive items such as game systems or stereos to the workshop.

Recommended:

All students are recommended to get Daily Studies for All Saxophones by Trent Kynaston, published by Belwin/Alfred. This is mainly a scale book, but also has other exercises and acomprehensive extension to most fingering charts.

Students entering 7-8 grade are recommended to have Rubank Advanced Method for Saxophone,Volume 1.

Students entering 9-10 grade are recommended to have Rubank Advanced Method forSaxophone, Volume 2.

Students entering 11-12 grade are recommended to get 48 Famous Studiesby Ferling, Southern Music Press.

We will be coaching students for FBA All-State audition music and the material will come from these books. Also, many counties use one of the All-State exercises for their All-County auditions. Please remember to use the grade level you will be in NEXT YEAR! If you are attending the workshop from outside of Florida, please feel free to bring the All-State audition material for your state.

MUSIC ACTIVITIES

Placement AuditionsOn the first day of the workshop after students check in at HATTER Hall, placement auditions willtake place in assigned rooms. Students will audition on one of the following saxophones: Alto,Tenor, or Baritone Saxophone. These placement auditions are to assign students to a specific chamber group. This may also determine which type of saxophone the student will play in these chamber groups. These placement auditions may also determine which masterclass rotation and morning warm-up class students are assigned to. See “Placement Audition Music” near back of packet.

Private LessonsPrivate lessons are an “optional” part of the saxophone workshop, included in the tuition. Studentsinterested in receiving a private lesson should prepare one of the following in addition to theirworkshop audition etude to perform in their placement audition:A selected solo (or movement) from the FBA solo & ensemble list (see recommended list)One or both audition etudes for 2015 Florida All State Band (for their respective grade)Private “jazz” lessons are also an “optional” part of the saxophone workshop, included in the tuition.Students interested in receiving a jazz private lesson may make arrangements immediatelyfollowing their jazz placement audition.

Master-classes & Technique-classesStudents will rotate four days to different topic master-classes. These will cover numerous specificconcepts of saxophone playing. There, they will be instructed by four of our saxophone faculty. Thetechnique-classes will focus on improving different physical saxophone fundamentals & musical playing.

JAZZ ClassesMost evenings during the workshop, students are split up into one of two types of classes.Students may choose to sign up for:1) a jazz improvisation class, focusing on jazz theory, ear-training, and technique for improving jazz

improvisation. (offered at the beginning, intermediate & advanced levels)2) a jazz reading class focusing on jazz style playing within a jazz band/ensemble setting.

Students should decide which jazz setting they wish to try-out for before the workshop begins.Students should also consider how much jazz experience they have before making this decision.

Ensembles: Saxophone Choirs & Saxophone Chamber groupsEach participant in the workshop will play in one of two saxophone choirs. Both groups perform inthe final concert on Saturday. Each participant will play in either a saxophone quartet or other smallsaxophone chamber setting. All chamber groups perform in the chamber music concert on Fridayevening. Both concerts are free and open to the public. Some students may play a differentsaxophone between these ensembles.

Student Honors RecitalStudents who wish to try out to perform on the honors recital should prepare a saxophone solo (ormovement) from the FBA solo & ensemble list. Auditions for this event will take place on Tuesdayof the workshop. The Student Honors Recital will take place on Thursday evening right before theguest Jazz Artist Concert. Both of these events are free and open to the public.

Faculty & Staff PerformancesMany of the staff and faculty perform four evenings during the workshop. Thursday’s faculty performance is reserved for our guest jazz artist. The other three feature much of our faculty & staff in a variety of musical settings on different saxophones. All faculty concerts are free and open to the public.

RECOMMENDED SOLO LITERATUREStudents may prepare either their All-State Band Audition Music or a solo from the StateSolo & Ensemble list if they wish to be considered for receiving a private lesson. Pleaseremember that this is “optional”. This material is available through Dornpublications.comand Eble.com among others. This list is selected from the FBA solo and ensemble list.

Saxophone Workshop Placement AuditionsUsed for:

Saxophone Band placement Saxophone Chamber Group Placement

Technique/Master Class Rotation

PLEASE READ THE AUDITION INFORMATION CAREFULLY !

On the first day of the workshop after students check in at HATTER Hall, placement auditions will take place in assigned rooms. Students will audition on one of the following saxophones:

Alto,Tenor, or Baritone Saxophone.

These placement auditions are to assign students to a specific chamber group. This may also determine which type of saxophone the student will play in these chamber groups. These placement auditions may also determine which masterclass rotation and morning warmup class students are assigned to.

A private lesson with one of the workshop faculty is optional, and not required. See the “Music Activities” page for specific requirements. Students who wish to tryout for a private lesson will do so during the placement audition time.

During the workshop, there are two saxophone choirs: Concert Saxophone Band & Symphonic Saxophone Band. All students are automatically assigned to the “Concert Band”, unless a student chooses to take the “Symphonic Band” audition, and is accepted. The Symphonic Saxophone Band is considered an advanced level performing ensemble. Students who choose to audition for the “Symphonic Band” will still audition on the same musical exercise within their grade level as everyone, and will also prepare two more short exercises and more scales. (Auditioning for Symphonic Saxophone Choir does not guarantee placement in this ensemble, regardless of experience or age.)
