THE INTERIORDESIGN& DECORATINGPROGRAM
The Institute of Design is expanding its current course portfolio with a new
Interior Design course.
The LMF50408 Diploma of Interior Design and Decorating is designed to
be both an entry level qualication in interior design and decorating and
related skills as well as a qualication providing the skills for employment
in various industries.
The program focuses on developing each students creative air when
selecting and combining interiors. The course equips students with the
skills and knowledge required to design and decorate domestic and
commercial projects.
THE TRAINING YOULL NEED
The Interior Design and Decorating department focuses on developing
each students creative air when planning and styling interiors. The course
equips students with the skills and knowledge to design and decorate
interiors from concept design and development through to completion.At the diploma level the course covers design and decoration of complete
decorative schemes for residential, retail, commercial and public spaces.
Students will work on client briefs within project parameters as they would
within the industry.
THE REWARDS
Positions within a company would attract around $35,000 for a graduate
junior design posit ion, $60 -$80,000 for a mid- level designer and up to $150,000
for a senior designer with many years of experience. Interior designer and
decorators have several other ways of charging for thei r time. Some designers
charge an hourly rate based on the project requirements. You could also
charge a one off fee which would be based on how long you estimate the
project may take, or a percentage (generally 10-20%) of the projects worth,
for example a $100,000 project may attract a fee of 10% being a $10,000
design fee.

CAREERS
GRADUATE INTERIOR DESIGNER OR INTERIOR
DECORATOR
Graduates work with in a team to create a stylised
space through the planning and specication of
furniture and all nishes and materials required.
You would look after a reference library of products
and materia ls keeping up to date with the latesttrends in design. You would work on preparing
presentation boards including materials and
nished samples. Showing initiative and creativity
would soon move you to a mid level position.
RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR DESIGNER OR
INTERIOR DECORATOR
Residential Interior Designers work more directly
with the client or occupier of the proposed space.
They plan, select colours and nishes as well as
select the furnishings for the space. They will also
specify furniture, wall coverings, oor coverings,
artwork , lighting and other xtures and ttings.
They organise purchases of these items onthe clients behalf. A good client brief and an
understanding of their taste would be required.
Small renovations could be designed with the use
of CAD and some local council guidelines. Period
styling knowledge is desirable .
RETAIL INTERIOR DESIGNER OR INTERIOR
DECORATOR
The retail design industry is an exciting and fast
paced world. Knowledge of current global trends,
CAD and detailing skills are essential when working
on a retail project. Retail design can include
boutique stores through to large department
stores. There is an excellent opportunity to custom
design ttings and xtures. You would be dealing
with builders/shoptters, local councils and
possibly corporate shopping centres. Retail design
can include some project management roles.
COMMERCIAL INTERIOR DESIGNER OR
INTERIOR DECORATOR
Commercial designers work on ofce, industrial
or other public spaces such as hospitals and
healthcare institutions. You would provide space
planning, furniture and nishes selection, electrical,
services and lighting specications. Specic
guidelines, such as occupational health and safetyfor hospital and healthcare, would be learnt within
the industry. CAD is also essential in this eld for
documentation and specication purposes. Local
council knowledge may be required.
COLOUR CONSULTANT
Colour consultants work individually or within a
larger corporate company. An understanding of
colour combined with different nishes and
specialised applied nishes is needed. You would
keep up to date with the very latest colour trends
and ideas as well as historic and heritage colours.
EXHIBITION, TV, FILM & SET DESIGN
Set designers and decorators plan and co-ordinate
the construction of a set space for the required
media use. With an emphasis on design impact
and presentation you also have to consider the
strength, safety and ease of on site construction/
deconstruction of the set. This will require a good
working relationship with builders, shoptters
and suppliers.
SELF EMPLOYMENT
An interior designer or decorator can have their
own company specializing in any or all of the
above elds. With the internet you can choose
to work from a home ofce or another location.
You will need a library of nishes and materials
samples, books and magazines for design
inspiration and to keep in touch with current
trends. CAD would be necessary if you wanted
to work on retail, commercial or complex residential
interior projects.

FEE-HELP is available for nationally accredited
courses at diploma level for all Australian
citizens.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE
Students who have completed year 10 or
mature age students.
