Gaelic culture at its best

“Ceilidh” (kay-lee) is Gaelic for “gathering,” and a journey along the Ceilidh Trail (Route 19) offers an opportunity to experience the true meaning

of the word. Spending time with friends and neighbours is a staple of life in this region and people here are proud to show off their Gaelic heritage.

Meet the locals by stopping into the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre or The Red Shoe Pub for some live music and dancing (see pages 244 & 245). Continue along the trail to Port Hood where you can enjoy a delicious meal at The Clove Hitch Bar & Bistro overlooking the ocean. Don’t forget to say “hello” to artist Ann Schroeder at her oceanfront studio; take part in one of her Fabric Dyeing by the Sea workshops, or peruse her beautiful hand-painted quilts and silk scarves (see page 245). A trip to Mabou wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Mabou Farmers’ Market, where over 40 vendors offer up delicious food, beautiful jewellery and art, produce, and, of course, live music. For the golfer in your group, visit the renowned and scenic Cabot Links in Inverness, with its greens sculpted amongst the sand dunes (see page 246).

This region has long been a melting pot for Celtic, Acadian, and First Nations people. Nowhere is this more evident than at the state-of-the-art performance facility, Strathspey Place, where the music, dance, and folklore of these cultures are celebrated (see page 244).

The land of Galloping CowsNo, our livestock hasn’t gotten into Glenora Distillery’s whisky—this is a not-to-be-missed culinary delight. The hand-crafted preserves at Galloping Cows gained international recognition when they were featured at the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the Toronto International Film Festival (see page 245).

Bellemeade Farm, MabouSituated on a working dairy and sheep farm, this charming shop is filled with Cape Breton crafts, hand-woven tartan blankets, throws, rugs, scarves, knits, and a large selection of yarn, includ-ing hand-dyed specialty yarns. 166 Rankinville Road, Mabou

Create a silk scarf inspired by the seaArtist Ann Schroeder shares her passion for colour in her inspiring workshop, Fabric Dyeing by the Sea. In Ann’s hillside studio overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the rolling dunes of West Mabou Beach, you’ll discover the magic of dyeing silk scarves, cotton fabric, and/or T-shirts with rainbow hues. Off the beaten track Little Mabou Road is a 14-kilometre scenic roadway that offers an alternate route between the communities of Port Hood and Mabou. To the delight of drivers or cyclists, the horizon opens up with a pano ramic view of the coastline. Accessible from Main Street in Port Hood or off Route 19 near Mabou, this section provides view scapes of lush farmland, fields of wild flowers, Mabou Harbour, the Mabou Highlands, and the open ocean. At the halfway point, you will find West Mabou Beach Provincial Park. This protected area boasts a beautiful large sandy beach and one of the finest dune systems in Nova Scotia. There are also several walking and hiking trails, a stocked fish pond, and a picnic area on site.

Outdoor AdventuresWhether you’re cycling our oceanside trail or discovering the communities and sandy beaches nestled among the rolling hills, the natural environment of this region is best seen at a slower pace. So, park your car to check out some of these gems, or turn to page 246 for complete listings.

Tackle a TunaExperience the ultimate adrenaline rush as you battle giant bluefin tuna. Often weighing in at over 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds), these fish are some of the largest in the world. Book your catch-and-release tour with It’s Now or Never Tuna Charters in Port Hood or Dawn Treader Tuna Charters in Inverness for an experience you won’t soon forget! (see pages 338 & 339)

Take a saltwater swimSet amid rolling hills and sand dunes, West Mabou Beach Provincial Park beckons you off the road to its soft sand and well-stocked fishing pond (see page 246). In Inverness, just a short walk down the boardwalk or a quick drive from downtown, you’ll find Inverness Beach. Grab an ice cream at the canteen and take a walk along 1.5 kilometres of soft sand. This beach is supervised during the summer (see page 246).

Hike the Cape Mabou HighlandsThis 30-kilometre wilderness trail system, known for its remarkable cliffs and rolling hills, leads the hiker along a number of loops. Many offer breathtaking views, such as Beinn Bhiorach (Steep Mountain) Trail, about 225 metres high. Follow along old cart tracks which were used in the early 1800s by the Scottish families who homesteaded this area. In May and June lobster boats can be seen below the cliffs, and you might be fortunate enough to spot whales (see page 246).
