School Addion Update By Father Eric
We are very excited that the St. Mary School addion will begin very soon. The 7,290 square foot addion features a cafeteria, two tutor rooms, an expansion of the kitchen, and addional storage space. The footprint of the addion will move the western edge of the school out sixteen feet. Much of the addional storage will be along the western edge of the gym. Likewise, the kitchen will be expanded to the west. The cafeteria will be off the northern edge of the cafeteria and locker room area. A rectangular courtyard similar to one with the Mary Garden will be created with Mrs. Wohlfert’s room being part of the east side and the cafeteria being the west edge. The cafeteria will create a second large space in the school for acvies – the gym being the other one.
The cafeteria will be able to be divided by a curtain into two spaces in order to accommodate mulple acvies simultaneously. There will be a new set of bathrooms connected to the cafeteria so that during holiday seasons two rentals can take place at the same me or if only one rental is occurring in the gym or cafeteria the other area can be sealed off easily. The locker rooms will be reclaimed for their intended use, and per state mandate a fire suppression system will be included both in the addion and throughout the exisng school.
The first meeng of the building commiee took place way back in August of 2017, so this project has been a long me in coming. At different points over the past two years, the commiee has consisted of different arrangements of Mary Enneking, Cindy Fedewa, Brent Huhn, Bill Irrer, Jan Miller, Jack Nurenberg, Jill Rademacher, Rich Rademacher, Glenn Simon, Darren Thelen, Valerie Thelen and Craig Trierweiler. I am very grateful to all of them for their hard work and experse.
Many of you saw dras of the project at the school open house last August. The floor plan has remained idencal. The roof design on those dras turned out to be quite expensive and put us over budget, so it was replaced with a flat roof. Vander Kodde Construcon from Grand Rapids was awarded the general contract.
As we gain the final state and diocesan approvals needed for the project, construcon should begin shortly before or aer our public groundbreaking ceremony. That ceremony will take place on Friday, May 31st. Bishop Boyea will preside at the 8:15 Mass that morning and the groundbreaking ceremony will take place immediately aerwards.
The addion is funded by the Witness to Hope Campaign, so I am grateful to all of you who pledged and have paid off or are paying off those pledges. If anyone would like to make an addional donaon to the building project (besides the Witness to Hope gi) it can be done directly to St. Mary Parish’s Capital Improvement Fund. Please join us on the 31st in celebrang a historic day in the life of St. Mary School and Parish and in the life of the Westphalia community.

Prayers Needed in Buck v. Gordon Case
The Michigan A/orney General announced a se/lement with the ACLU
regarding a case addressing adopon by same-sex couples. That se/lement was
widely reported as “barring state-funded adopon agencies from refusing
LGBTQ parents.” While that se/lement included no measures against the
Catholic Charies agencies of the Diocese of Lansing (or any other diocese), the
se/lement communicated the State’s intenon to cancel the contracts of
agencies unless they change their policies and began placing children with same-
sex couples or those claiming a transgender identy. In April, St. Vincent
Catholic Charies, one of the Diocese of Lansing’s five Catholic Charies
agencies, sued the State of Michigan in federal court. By the lawsuit, St.
Vincent’s is asserng its rights to free exercise of religion, free speech, and equal
protecon and is seeking a federal court order that would prevent the State
from violang these rights. St. Vincent’s and the other plainffs are requesng
that, during the lawsuit, the court preserve the status quo and order that St.
Vincent be permi/ed to connue uning children with adopve and foster
families in accord with Catholic principles. While the Diocese’s other Catholic
Charies agencies are not pares to the ligaon, it is expected that the
ligaon, if successful, would likewise benefit all such agencies. Bishop Boyea
asks that we hold in prayer this case that religious liberty as well as balanced
concepts of the human person in general and the complementarity of the sexes
in parcular be respected in our laws.

Jace and I want to thank everyone at St. Mary's Parish for
your warm welcome and all your prayers. It has been so heart
warming to feel the love and support from the enre

many people at the welcome recepon. I can not express the thankfulness for
the love we feel from our new church community. We truly feel like family and
that is a very special thing to find in a church. Also we want to extend a very
special thank you to the RCIA team including; Deacon Chuck, Barb Spitzley,
Jenny Schneider and Mary Nurenberg. Our sponsors Jennifer Thelen and John
Lehman and Laurie Sillman for being our inspiraon to learn about the catholic
