GOLDEN APRICOT DAILY 2018 | 14 JULY | DAY 7
ուլ րիխ զայդլ
austrian director, writer and producer Ulrich seidl started his filmmaking career making documentaries, and has grown to be one of the most original and sharpest practitioners of the form. but his achievements in feature films are just as impressive. his first feature dog days won the grand Prize at venice, while his Paradise trilogy (all three of which screened at golden apricot over the years) are surely among the best films of the past decades.
over the years seidl has ventured to blur the line between documentary and fiction, creating his own approach to filmmaking in which “documentary reality” is altered to be a fictitious and conceptual one. seidl’s works have often shocked audiences, and whole societies, and this is definitely true of his latest film safari, which had its yerevan Premiere earlier this week. The film depicts the practices of european big game hunters who travel to africa for an easy sip of violence, unabashedly revealing their colonial views in interviews with the director. seidl never loses his grip as a shocker and provocateur, digging deep into the pits of the human essence that most of us would like to ignore.

You were once kicked out of film school, because your skills weren’t considered sufficient. Did this affect your view of academic film education in any way?“That’s a very individual thing. Some are able to make movies by the didactic method, some are able to do it based on their life experience, while others need the knowledge they get from academic education as a foundation for making films. I was kicked out because I didn’t agree with the theories and ideas that were popular at that school. I was certain that students should express their own talents instead of following theories that are supposedly set in stone.”
You continually blur the line between fiction and documentary. Do you think there will ever come a time when those words will just be old-fashioned academic terms?“I don’t think that will ever happen, although I myself have been insisting for a long time now that there is no distinction between the two. But that was a very conscious provocation on my part. The truth is that a distinction does exist, up until the point when a person is no longer acting for himself but for others. For instance, I often use nonprofessional, natural actors in my films, but their surroundings aren’t their own or their pets aren’t their own. And yet, right now we’re facing a much bigger problem. Oftentimes the media don’t let you distinguish if the reality you’re seeing is real or fake. It’s very dangerous when lies are being sold as the truth.”
So you could say the media are an important source of inspiration for you.“Of course; I don’t separate myself from society and I live my life in the same world, overrun by media, which in my opinion hasn’t justified itself.”
But many also accuse you of crossing certain ethi-cal boundaries. Do these barriers exist for you?“A priori I don’t have any limits. But during shooting there is a very clear understanding that people’s dignity should not be trampled on. However, we live in a society that doesn’t tolerate certain things. For example, if I show violence against women, many will be angry. And yet I feel if something is there then it absolutely must be shown. In the case of Safari, ARTE was unhappy that we openly show animals being killed and skinned. But that’s exactly what I wanted to show. I don’t want my films to calm the audience down. On the contrary, cinema exists to make people think and come together, try and understand the reasons and the essence behind various phenomena.”
You’ve often said you don’t have any particular method of work. Is this true or is it also one of your provocative statements?“I say what I mean. Of course I work with actors a lot and study the locations. A great deal of time and energy goes to preproduction. Step by step the film starts to take form. But to say that there was a method all along would be wrong. There’s a general idea at the start, but during the making of the film there is no preconceived method.”
So the ending of the films also takes form during the shoot?“In many cases, yes. Sometimes when you reach the end of a shoot, you start thinking about this whole journey you’ve gone through and what kind of ending it can have, or better yet what part of the journey can be made the ending. Or you have a preconceived ending that might change along the way. For instance, for the film we’re making now I can already predict what the ending will be, although we’re not even halfway through the shoot.”
If you consider Safari a manifesto, then who was it aimed at?“The film is not a manifesto per se. Yet the paradoxical and interesting thing is that animal rights organizations have liked the film and urge people to watch it, but the hunters’ communities also accept it and organize private screenings for each other from time to time.”
In Safari it seems like the order in which animals get killed is determined by the level of pity one might feel for them: the bison-like brutal animals go first and then you move on to calmer animals like the giraffe. Where would you place humans on this scale of pity?“The human is at the center of the film, just as he is at the center of the planet. And it’s man who has the most destructive effect, because he places himself above everything else, and then cuts the branch that’s holding him up and kills everything that supports his existence.” KA

The Elephant’s Swan Songan elephant sitting still (hu bo, china, 2018). yerevan Premiere. 147 20:00 moscow cinema blue hall
After graduating with straight A’s from the Beijing Film Academy, director Hu Bo made his debut with the 230minute epic An Elephant Sitting Still. But at the film’s international premiere at the Berlin film festival last February, it was already covered with a tragic pall: the director committed suicide at the age of 29. One of the most promising newcomers of Chinese cinema ended his life before his journey in cinema had truly begun.
In an unnamed, grey, and somber Chinese town lives a young man named Wei Bu, whose father was fired from his teaching job for bribery. Tangled up in this unfair and unbearable situation, Wei Bu sets off on a long odyssey through this old, rundown town. Along the
way he’ll meet an old man whose family wants to put him in a retirement home, a classmate whom Bu seems to have feelings for, and various other people. He comes across the just and the fraudulent; across people who’ve suffered injustice and people sowing that injustice. All of them are united by an existential void, industrial chaos, and one strange goal – to reach Manchuria. For in Manchuria’s zoo there lives an elephant who’s been sitting still for a very long time. This peaceful and impassive creature becomes a telling symbol of Buddhist tranquility.
Rules of classical screenwriting dictate that the four characters of the film, once separated, will eventually meet up again. But with his unique sense of mood, color, and narrative it’s hard to pin Hu Bo to any one cinematic tradition. The young director was as much a proponent of meditative cinema, as a fullyrealized master of political allegory. His first and final feature is the accumulation of his explosive existential fire. Sadly, when the house caught fire, he managed to save his characters, but decided to stay inside himself. KA
Decades of Tilting at WindmillsThe man Who Killed don Quixote (Terry gilliam, spain/belgium/France/Portugal/UK, 2018). closing Film. 147 17:00, 157 21:00 moscow cinema red hall.
Every film’s existence is a small miracle. Getting together the money and finding the right collaborators is never an easy task for any filmmaker. But as difficult productions go, Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote definitely takes the cake: the legendary director has been working on this passion project since 1991.
Gilliam’s version of Cervantes’ classic stories of Don Quixote, first published in 1605, pulls the Medieval windmillbattling knight into the present and turns his squire Sancho Panza into a cynical filmmaker working on a commercial. After spending more than a decade finessing the screenplay and gathering funds, Gilliam first entered production in 2000, with Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp in the two primary roles. But a series of setbacks – including floods, a double hernia for Rochefort, and financial woes, to name just a few – plagued the set and after just a few weeks filming had to be shut down. The only thing to come out of it was the brilliant makingof (or rather, unmakingof) documentary Lost in La Mancha by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe.
Ever since that tragedy, Gilliam has kept on trying to revive the project, turning into something of a Don Quichote himself. Over the years, such wellknown actors as Robert Duvall, Michael Palin and John Hurt have been attached
to take on the title role, only for the project to repeatedly fall through. Even now that the film is finally finished, the problems still aren’t over: Portuguese producer Paulo Branco, who was briefly attached to the project in 2016, claims he still has the rights and wants to get paid. One thing’s for sure: Fulton and Pepe’s followup to Lost in La Mancha, which has already been announced, will have a hell of a tale to tell.
Inevitably, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has a hard time living up to the legendary status accrued through 25 years of buildup and hype.
But it still has plenty of pleasures to offer – perhaps even more so than would have been the case if Gilliam had managed to finish the film way back in 2000, since he has incorporated the film’s bumpy road to creation into its very fabric to hilarious effect. Just as Cervantes reflected on telling stories in a written text, so Gilliam turns his satirical eye onto the process of filmmaking. The net result is a delightful paradox: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote may not be Gilliam’s best film, but it might be his masterpiece nevertheless. JBH
Out of Sightsella Turcica (yusup razykov, russia, 2017). yerevan Premiere, cis Focus. 147 15:00 moscow cinema blue hall.
A young man and woman meet in a Moscow café to discuss a sexually charged proposition. For a little while it seems as if Yusup Razykov’s Sella Turcica will dive into the steamy underground world of adult film production. However, Razykov’s film doesn’t turn out to be that explicit after all.
In fact, it seems that the opening scene of Sella Turcica is classic baitandswitch, since the real pro
tagonist only emerges later. In the same café an old, bald man with a stonecold face had been eyeing the young couple the whole time. He secretly follows them all the way to their apartment. When they’re shown in a blackandwhite scene on a porn set, it’s not necessarily what’s really happening. Rather, it’s the secretive man’s idea of what’s going on.
Although he’s probably right. You see, this mysterious man has spent his whole working life as an agent for the Committee for State Security (KGB). Spying is in his nature, even now that society doesn’t really need him to do that anymore. Although he’s retired, this agent can’t shake his urge to eavesdrop, scouring for tidbits of information and gossip. Through this charac
ter Razykov portrays a new Russia that’s still having trouble shaking off its Soviet past.
The film’s title refers to the small bony cavity around the brain that protects the gland that controls blood pressure, managing energy and other bodily activities. In Razykov’s Russia this gland seems to lie exposed. While in the past men like this spy were tightly regulated within the Soviet system, now they go about the same routines unchecked and without a sense of purpose. In his first leading role, Valeriy Maslov beautifully embodies this seismic shift. True to his past his character is always on the lookout. Meanwhile society moves on and he himself slips slowly out of sight. HE
Crime Familyshoplifters (hirokazu Koreeda, Japan, 2018). yerevan Premiere. 157 19:00 moscow cinema red hall.
While Terry Gilliam’s version of Quixote is this year’s official Closing Film, the final film to actually get a screening at Golden Apricot 2018 is Shoplifters. This latest film by Japanese grand master Hirokazu Koreeda won the Golden Palm at this year’s Cannes film festival, and its intimate family story is perfect counterprogramming to tomorrow’s World Cup final.
Or maybe “family story” isn’t exactly right. At first glance, it does seem that we’re back in that territory, which Koreeda has mined to great effect in many of his previous films. Indeed, the film’s original Japanese title translates to “Shoplifting family”. We’re introduced to to a household of petty thieves. Father and son form a welloiled machine when they’re on a shoplifting spree; grandma has a nifty line in pension fraud; and an older girl living with the family works at a strip club. “If it’s in the store, it doesn’t belong to anyone yet”, the dad tells his son.
But after the family takes in a young girl, basically kidnapping her to save her from her real parents’ abuse, we soon find out that not everything is as it seems in this selfproclaimed family unit. Koreeda doesn’t judge these characters, either for the petty crimes they commit to survive or for the more severe acts in their pasts which slowly come . Instead, he accents the loving and caring relationships that bind this makeshift family together. “Perhaps the bond is stronger when you choose your own family”, the mother muses at one point, and Shoplifters indeed questions the strong emphasis on blood relations that is still prevalent in Japanese society, as it is in much of the world.
Shoplifters is a film full of heart, and by the time the family’s carefully constructed world starts to unravel in the film’s second half, you’re completely on their side. While there’s nothing too flashy about Koreeda’s style, the accumulation of beautiful, lowkey moments builds up to a whole that’s all the more impressive for its modest scale. JBH
TErrY GIllIAM:“The film and me have both changed a lot. The film just got better, it got richer, it has more levels in it. It’s more about cinema and what films do to people, how dreams effect us – because films are dreams, really.”
During yesterday's closing meeting of the CineThink workshop, held as part of gaIFF pro, two directors shared the 2.5 million dram (roughly 4,500 euro) award supported by the armenian prime minister: Helena melkonyan for the documentary Bro, and Lusine Sargsyan for the fiction film The Driver.
GOLDEN APRICOT DAILY 2018 | 14 JULY | DAY 7 inTerviews 7
celebrating the love for cinemaFeature competition jury member beki Probst built an impressive career in the film business, for which she was honored at the berlin film festival earlier this year. Talking with the daily, she looks back and to the future.
In a cinema career spanning decades, Beki Probst worked as a film exhibitor and festival director in Switzerland and ultimately became
the woman who gave Berlin’s European Film Market its current name and shape. “Cinema is a big part of my life”, she says. “When I’m not working I see films, I read about films. If you love what you’re doing then you’ve really won the lottery.”
She’s pleased to be on this year’s Feature Competition jury: “Golden Apricot is a festival not based on red carpets, football stars and L’Oréal, but on people who love cinema. It’s a celebration of the love for cinema.” Reflecting on this year’s market activities at GAIFF Pro, Probest emphasizes: “A film market is not just the output of this year’s films. It’s also what’s happening there in terms of future projects that need financing, or in terms of the past – like a distributor who finds a buyer for their back cat
alogue. These connecting activities are more important than seminars and debates.”
Next year, Probst will be the subject of a documentary by Swiss filmmaker Rebecca Panian. “According to the producer the film will also illustrate a part of the history of cinema in Switzerland. A lot has changed with digitization. Unfortunately, the idea of exclusivity is disappearing.”
In the meantime, Probst is getting ready for a new challenge: this fall, she’ll be entering the Lausanne Film School on a screenwriting course. “I’ve always lived for cinema, but I wanted to go with grace, so to say. That’s why I handed over the keys to [current EFM director] Matthijs Knol.” But after she did so, Probst suddenly faced a rather empty schedule. “To not fall into a depression, I decided to go back to school. I chose
screenwriting because I’m too old to run up a mountain and shoot a little film. But I like reading and writing.” SK
‘The system seemed to close the gate for me’indian filmmaker chezhiyan ramalingam (or chezhiyan for short) could pull from his own experiences for his debut film To let about aspiring screenwriter illango, who faces deceit and discrimination when trying to find an affordable home for his family.
Illango’s ordeal as a screenwriter trying to sell his script while churning out commercials for cheesy products to earn a living, reflects some of Chezhiyan’s own dealings with the film industry. Although his initial focus was on writing, it turned out this wouldn’t be his way into cinema. “The film industry in India back then didn’t have a system of script applications. When you wanted to make a film, you’d go to a producer and basically narrate the full story, including all the fights and songs, for two or three hours. That wasn’t in my nature – I can write screenplays of hundreds of pages but I can’t explain the story to someone for hours with no break. So that system seemed to close the gate for me.”
However, through working behind the scenes for other directors he learned how films are made, and after ten films as a cinematographer, he has made his directorial debut with To Let. The scarcity and discrimination on the housing market which the film addresses are still increasing.
With a modest length of less than 98 minutes, no fights and no songs, his debut clearly breaks with the formula that’s still popular in his region. Chezhiyan abstains from using music altogether, as his film aims for realism. “Chennai is a city of sounds”, he explains. “Loud voices, vehicles: you can hear all kinds of sounds in the street. I wanted to use this to bring the reality of the film very close.”
The film will only be released in India after it has completed its festival tour; Chezhiyan hopes the international appraisal will raise more interest in realist cinema at home. “Nowadays, people see very good films online, which makes them aware of good and bad films. I don’t think cinemas can keep showing people films that tell the same story over and again, only with different actors and different songs.” SK
‘Kiarostami told me to stick with this story’iranian masters of cinema Jafar Panahi and the late abbas Kiarostami urged director hesam eslami to keep working on his debut 20th century suspects, a documentary about a group of boys trying to survive in Tehran by stealing cars.
Hesam Eslami’s entry point into the world of Ehsan and his friends was one of pure coincidence: the teenagers stole the director’s car. Instead of reporting them to the police Eslami decided to make use of this opportunity to reach out to them.
“I could recognize something of myself in them”, Eslami remembers. “This anger, this sense of rebelliousness. I had that as well when I was younger. Maybe that’s a universal part of growing up, or maybe I specifically felt it because I grew up in a southern region of Iran that was affected by the war with Iraq. Either way, we shared a connection and eventually I wanted to express that in my film.”
Over the course of his debut documentary 20th Circuit Suspects, Eslami slowly reveals his relationship with the boys. “I originally didn’t want to include myself in the film”, Eslami admits. “But I became so close with them that I couldn’t tell this story any other way.” What really convinced Eslami to keep working was advice he received from his mentors Jafar Panahi, who’s still struggling with a ban on filmmaking, and Abbas Kiarostami, who sadly passed away in 2016. Eslami recalls: “They saw a short version of the film
and were enthusiastic. Kiarostami said: ‘Stick with this story.’ So I did for six more years.” Panahi’s first reaction was enthusiastic as well. “He became so excited that he asked me if I had my laptop and hard drive with me. I did, so we took it out and reedited parts of the film together. We got so involved that we actually edited through the night!”
Eslami was happy to be taken under the wings
by these directors, who have grown to be mentors for a new generation of Iranian filmmakers. “I’ve seen Panahi help so many young directors. It’s incredible to see how he stimulates talent. Without their advice I would never have taken this film so far. I’m happy I did because over the course of six years I’ve not only made a comingofage story about Ehsan, but also about myself.” HE
‘i didn’t want to spell everything out’The charm of the hypermarket in in the aisles is so unreal that some critics have compared the wholesale shopping center to harry Potter’s hogwarts. but director Thomas stuber doesn’t quite agree: “harry Potter, no. magical place, yes.”
The film is based on a short story by Clemens Meyer. “That’s where that poetic layer comes from”, Stuber explains. “I just tried to express it through cinema. The balance was important because the place where everything is taking place is not poetic at all.”
That humdrum place gets an almost tangible retroatmosphere in the film, thanks to the director’s chosen colors and style. “Firstly, because the film has a narrator, we know that it doesn’t take place at this moment in time: Christian, our main character, tells us he used to work in the supermarket in the past tense. And second of all, we see that the place itself is not exactly full of the latest technology. In a way I was inspired by
Kaurismäki’s films, who also uses those kinds of things – scenes with twentyyearold American cars, for example.”
The two leading lights in the unpoetic environment are the stars of modern German cinema: actors Sandra Hüller and Franz Rogowski. “It was obvious to me from the very start that Peter Kurth, with whom I had already worked on my previous film Herbert, would play the role of Bruno. And I had wanted to work with Sandra since that time as well, so I know I wanted her for the role of Marion. Of course I also knew Franz, but I hadn’t worked with him. His popularity began to rise a few years ago, but he was already cast before that. We sent the actors to work in a real supermarket for a week so they could play their roles more realistically.”
At work, these characters have everyday talks about the present, but almost nothing is known about their lives outside of the hypermarket. That was on purpose, Stuber says: “Did Bruno have a wife? Yes – but the details are unknown. Christian, on the other hand, probably has no parents. We don’t know for sure, but there’s a certain fatherson dynamic going on, the idea of passing on your experience through the process of learning to drive a forklift. Christian can become Bruno’s successor, take his place. Everything else is left a secret, left behind closed doors. It’s left for the audience to find out, I didn’t want to spell everything out. People need to have their own opinions, especially about the ending.” DM
