Wimax works on standard IEEE 802.16 standard that is different from Wi-Fi that works on 802.11.Wi-Fi coverage is about 1 Kms but Wimax coverage is about 10 to 15 Kms NLOS. There are newwimax base station that can cover more than 15 Kms NLOS.
Regarding the frequencies of wimax equipments, you have option to choose whether you would liketo work on license frequences or non-licensed frequences.
