Zones of Control

After Germany surrendered at the end of WWII, the Big Three, Harry S. Truman (U.S.), Winston Churchill (British), and Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union), met to determine the fate of Germany. They agreed to divide Germany into four zones, one each for the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union to occupy (take care of) and govern. In addition to the four zones of Germany, Berlin the capital city was divided into 4 zones.

Within five years, the U.S., British, and French zones were united to create an West Germany and West Berlin. The Soviet occupied zones would be known as East Germany and East Berlin.

Europe after WWII looks likes the map below, divided between communist and anti-communist powers.

1. List three countries that are southwest of the Soviet Union

Country Economic system

2. Identify three countries that remain neutral. What does it mean that these countries are neutral?

Key: Green- alliances of the anti-communist Western powers

(U.S., U.K., and France) Red- Soviet Union and its

3. Using the map, explain how Europe is divided after WWII. Include in your answer a detailed reason why Europe is divided.

Post WWI Europe- Alsace- Lorraine

At the end of WWI Europe’s countries and their borders changed again as a result of the Treaty of Versailles. For many decades Germany and France have fought over the Alsace-Lorraine territory. Alsace-Lorraine lies southwest of the Rhine River (a river in southwest Germany). This territory contains vital raw materials such as iron ore and coal. These are materials both Germany and France needed for industrial (machinery) factories. The loss of access to Alsace- Lorraine was terrible for the nations’ economy, resulting in job loss, and fewer raw materials to fuel factory produced goods, which meant fewer goods to sell and be purchased.

Answer:How does having control of Alsace-Lorraine impact Germany’s or France’s power?

Post WWI Europe- the Rhineland

The Treaty of Versailles was considered a harsh peace by the Germans. They were especially unhappy with the War Guilt Clause, which declared Germany and Austria were responsible for starting World War I. Germany was required to pay reparations, or money, for the damages received by the Allied powers’ and their people as a result of war. In addition, Germany lost much of its territories such as Alsace-Lorraine and sections of eastern Germany which would be given to Poland. German land along the Rhine River became a demilitarized zone, which meant it was stripped of all weapons and forts. Most of WWI was fought along the French/German border. This hoped to serve as a barrier to any future German moves against France.

1. Predict: How does Germany’s location impact its power during wartime? Use the map to provide two specific examples

2. How do you think Germany felt about the consequences of the Treaty of Versailles?

3. Identify three countries you think suffered the most from the effects of the war.

4. What is one relationship between Alsace-Lorraine and the Rhineland?

5. Use the map to explain, why France would want the Rhineland to be demilitarized?

Zones of Control

After Germany quit fighting at the end of WWII, leaders from America, Britain, and the Soviet Union met to choose what would happen to Germany. They agreed to split Germany into four zones, one each for the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union to take care of and run the area’s government.

Within five years, the U.S., British, and French zones were united to create an West Germany and West Berlin. The Soviet zones would be known as East Germany and East Berlin.

Europe after WWII looks likes the map below, divided between communist and anti-communist powers.

List one country that remained neutral. What does it mean that this country is neutral? (look at the map key!)

Using the map, explain what the two main colors mean for Europe?

Post WWI Europe- Alsace- Lorraine

At the end of WWI Europe’s countries changed a lot because of a peace agreement called, the Treaty of Versailles. For many years Germany and France fought for Alsace-Lorraine. Alsace-Lorraine is land between Germany and France. This territory has very important raw materials like iron ore and coal. These are materials both Germany and France need for machines in factories. The loss of land in Alsace- Lorraine was really bad for the country. They could no longer make things to sell which hurt the amount of money France or Germany had.

Answer:How does having control of Alsace-Lorraine help Germany or France?

Post WWI Europe- the Rhineland

The Treaty of Versailles was not a fair peace by the Germans. They were really unhappy with the War Guilt Clause, which said Germany and Austria had to take the blame for starting World War I. Germany had to pay reparations, or money, for the damages made by the war. In addition, Germany lost much of its land such as Alsace-Lorraine and parts of Germany which would be given to Poland. German land along the Rhine River became a demilitarized zone, which meant all of the weapons were taken away. Most of WWI was fought where the France/Germany meets each other. This was to help keep Germany from starting more wars with France.

Describe: Where is Germany in Europe?

Who is Germany close to? List two countries

What do you think happened to these close countries during World War I?

Do you think Germany liked or did not like the Treaty of Versailles? Why?

Use the map to explain, why France would want the Rhineland to have its weapons taken away?
