Alief ISD has prepared this Long-Range Technology Plan, "Transforming Learning in the Digital Age", to articulate a common vision for Technology in the district and identify strategies that will help Alief implement advanced Technology to--

• Develop students’ capacity to communicate and use Technology to think critically & collaboratively solve real-world problems• Develop critical higher order thinking skills essential for academic and workplace success• Build the capacity of all teachers to integrate digital tools effectively into curriculum and instruction

Background

This plan developed from information drawn from a diverse group of stakeholders and sources, including:

• A review of current research to identify best practices• A survey of students, teachers, administrators, other stakeholders and review of school site hardware and instructional media• Interviews with site and district administrators and representatives from the Alief community• Teacher (PK-12th grade) input meetings• Discussions with Advisory Committees, Content Specialists and Technological Support Teams

• Digital learning aligned with the curriculum will positively influence student achievement. • Continuous training and support is necessary to leverage Technology & digital tools. • Support and expertise provided by campus specialists and Technology service personnel play an integral role in the success of the district’s digital learning program. • Integration of Technology will result in improved digital literacy skills and the ability of students and staff to communicate, create, locate, process, synthesize, validate, leverage, and present information in a variety of formats. • Advancements in Technology will continue to increase the efficiency and productivity of the district. • "Transforming Learning in the Digital Age," is a roadmap that will leverage and infuse Technology and digital tools into instructional practices. The roadmap will also provide sound financial practices to assist the district towards planning, purchasing, and integration of Technology for the benefit of our students, staff and community.

Needs Assessment & Planning Process

The Instructional Technology leadership team used a systematic process to engage stakeholders to determine current needs for digital learning. Through meaningful conversations, stakeholders expressed their ideas, thoughts and innovations on learning in the digital age while leveraging Technology and digital resources. After identifying current conditions and analyzing stakeholder feedback, the District Technology/Digital Learning Committee pinpointed the following areas to develop--Learning, Teaching, Professional Development, Leadership and Infrastructure.

Current Conditions-- Teaching and LearningAlief ISD Provides:• Engaging classroom environments and library commons areas utilizing 21st Century Web 2.0 Technology tools including hardware, software, devices, internet connectivity to all classrooms and access to online information literacy resources to support student achievement and development of digital citizens

• Online access to lessons, calendars, databases and student email via the district learning management system to facilitate an online communication between home and school (parent access to learning management system will begin in Aug. 2017)

• Blended curriculum integrating digital tools and delivered through an online learning environment for students

• Identified best practices to facilitate a shift in Pedagogy to enable the transformation of digital classroom environments

• An automated Library Circulation System in each campus library, L4U and subscriptions to online resources for teachers and students including databases and encyclopedias

Identified Needs AISD stakeholders have identified needs in the following five areas: Learning, Teaching, Professional Development, Leadership, and Infrastructure. Area goals were addressed by defining specific objectives with outcomes and strategies assigned within timelines for completion that will facilitate reaching the identified plan goals. The identified Technology goals were also embedded into other district planning documents including Campus Technology Plans and District Improvement Plan. The following needs have been identified:

• Strive to provide equity through a variety of mobile devices within classrooms• Use video archives and digital streaming resources within instructional environments • Update curriculum pacing guides to include Technology rich lessons• Technology integration should be aligned with existing curriculum resources and desired student outcomes • Investigate digital tools that facilitate ease of access for primary students • Teach students to gather and use information and social tools responsibly and ethically and practice safely through research based projects• Establish a minimum standard for digital and blended learning environments• Continue to integrate Responsible Use Practices, internet safety, cyberbullying and digital citizenship embedded into the curriculum • Continue the development of the Library Commons Areas to provide access to district resources and 21st Century environments

• Provide professional development for best practices and classroom management for BYOD• Provide training opportunities on universal design practices that would influence all learners in all classrooms • Provide models of integration of Technology during instruction to enhance digital classroom environments• Provide ongoing professional development through online and face-to-face opportunities

1. The District Technology Committee will meet as needed to evaluate emerging Technology and to review and revise the 2017-2020 Long Range Technology Plan. Committee members represent a cross-section of the district and the community and will serve for at least two years.

2. "Transforming Learning in the Digital Age” LRPT goals are included in the Alief ISD District Improvement Plan with strategy implementation documentation verified annually. Progress reports on strategy development / completion will be presented to the District Technology Committee for review. Copies of all updates will be provided to AISD Board of Trustees and a detailed annual Technology report will be presented.

3. Teacher Technology Competency Surveys / assessments will be administered annually. Results will be presented in the annual district report as well as utilized in the Campus Technology Plans.

4. Each campus will establish a building Technology committee at the beginning of each school year to develop and implement Technology action items that correspond to the district plan. These plans will be incorporated in the Campus Technology Plan. All Campus Technology Plans are updated annually and undergo a peer review.

5. Specific area focus subcommittees will meet as needed for an ongoing process of evaluation of the plan.

Evaluation Methods

1. Student Technology competency proficiency levels will be evaluated annually to measure the advancement of observable learner proficiencies

• Grades Pre K - 6 will utilize teacher observation checklists. • Grades 7 and 8 will utilize a multiple-choice questionnaire combined with teacher observations.

• Grades 9 - 12 will report individual Technology course enrollment pass / fail data.

• Annual data analysis of student performance on state academic standards will be reviewed. • Development of an online Student Competency assessment will utilize data collected from the Web Based Technology Applications resources and end of unit assessments. This format of assessment will be evaluated and considered for gradual phase out of the existing observation checklists.

2. Teacher Technology competency proficiency levels will be evaluated annually with performance reviews by campus administrators. Classroom observations will be used to verify the integration of Technology and be reflected in annual PDAS evaluations.

• Development of an online Teacher Competency assessment will utilize resources from regional and state service centers and internal committees. This format of

• Online curriculum resources will be reviewed annually to ensure the inclusion of Technology resources.

4. Technology Plan will report the acquiring and deployment of Technology and telecommunication services annually.

• Annual inventory of hardware and software will be maintained and reported in the campus Technology plan.
