BROWN BAG LUNCH TIME SEMINAR

With a focus on the contemporary history of Danish school architecture, this seminar aims to analyze and discuss the sometimes messy, contradictory, and stretched out intra-actions of space, materiality and pedagogy in the making of material school design. The seminar will take its outset in the forthcoming book Making Education. Material School Design and Educational Governance (eds. Grosvenor & Rasmussen, Sept./Oct. 2018), which, inspired by Tim Ingold’s notion of making, explores the relationship between educational governance and material school design as a complex entanglement of people and material matters, political and pedagogical ideas, processes of construction and building but also of aesthetics and practices of everyday schooling. Developing these lines of thought further, the seminar will also include a presentation of an ongoing project about teachers’ pedagogical work and new school buildings in Denmark in the 1970s and 2010s.

Lisa Rosén Rasmussen is associate professor in the field of the contemporary history of schooling at the Danish School of Eduaction (DPU)/Aarhus University, Denmark. In her work she focuses on educational architecture, school space and materialities of schooling as a way of exploring the intercrossings of policy, pedagogy and everyday life.
