Opening Prayer

God of the prophets,in every age you send the word of truth, familiar, yet new, a sign of contradiction.

Let us not be counted among those who lack faith, but give us the visionto see Christ in our midstand to welcome your saving word.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Sonwho lives and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit,God forever and ever.

Introit

SUP 178 LEV2 161

“Go preach my gospel,” saith the Lord,“Bid the whole earth my grace receive,Explain to them my sacred word,Bid them believe, obey, and live.”

“I’ll make my great commission known,And ye shall prove my gospel trueBy all the works that I have done,And all the wonders ye shall do.”

“Go heal the sick, go raise the dead,Go cast out devils in my name,Nor let my prophets be afraid,Though man reproach, and will blaspheme.”

“While thus ye follow my commands,I’m with you till the world shall end.All pow’r in trusted in my hands;I can destroy and can defend.”

He spake and light shone round His head.On a bright cloud to heav’n He rode.

Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, "Look, we are your bone and flesh. For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. The LORD said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel." So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. David occupied the stronghold, and named it the city of David. David built the city all around from the Millo inward. And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him.

Psalm 48

1 Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised; * in the city of our God is his holy hill.

2 Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the hill of Zion, * the very centre of the world and the city of the great King.

3 God is in her citadels; * he is known to be her sure refuge.

4 Behold, the kings of the earth assembled * and marched forward together.

5 They looked and were astounded; * they retreated and fled in terror.

6 Trembling seized them there; * they writhed like a woman in childbirth, like ships of the sea when the east wind shatters them.

7 As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God; * God has established her for ever.

8 We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, * in the midst of your temple.

9 Your praise, like your Name, O God, reaches to the world's end; * your right hand is full of justice.

10 Let Mount Zion be glad and the cities of Judah rejoice, * because of your judgments.

11 Make the circuit of Zion; walk round about her; * count the number of her towers.

12 Consider well her bulwarks; examine her strongholds; * that you may tell those who come after.

13 This God is our God for ever and ever; * he shall be our guide for evermore.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forever. Amen.

Second Reading

2 Corinthians 12:2-10 I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows— was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Hymn 314

God of mercy, God of grace,

show the brightness of thy face;Shine upon us, Saviour, shine, fill thy Church with light divine;and thy saving health extend unto earth’s remotest end.

Let the people praise thee, Lord;be by all that live adored;let the nations shout and singglory to their Saviour King;at thy feet their tribute pay,and thy holy will obey.

Let the people praise thee, Lord;earth shall then her fruits afford;God to man his blessing give, man to God devoted live;all below, and all above, one in joy, and light, and love.

Gospel

Mark 6:1-13 Jesus came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honour, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house." And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them." So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.ALL: Amen

Hymn 215

Come, living God, when least expected, when minds are dull and hearts are cold, through sharpening word and warm affection revealing truths as yet untold.

Break from the tomb in which we hide you to speak again in startling ways;break through the words in which we bind you to resurrect our lifeless praise.

Come now, as once you came to Moses within the bush alive with flame, or to Elijah on the mountain, by silence pressing home your claim.

So, let our minds be sharp to read you in sight or sound or printed page, and let us greet you in our neighbours, in ardent youth or mellow age.

Then, through our gloom, your Son will meet us as vivid truth and living Lord, exploding doubt and disillusion to scatter hope and joy abroad.

Then we will share his radiant brightness and, blazing through the dread of night,

PRESIDENT

All Holy and glorious Father, our Creator God, we give you thanks because in your loving wisdom you brought all things into being, and are truly worthy of praise from every creature you have made.

Again and again

we have turned away from you; yet in every age your steadfast love has called us to return, to live in union with you: for it is your eternal purpose to put new life into all things and make them holy.

Through your Son, Jesus Christ

who took our human nature upon Him you have redeemed the world from the bondage of sin: and by the power of your Holy Spirit you have gathered a people to yourself, to make known in every place His perfect offering which He made to the glory of your Name.

Hear us, therefore, Father,

through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; And grant that these gifts of bread and wine may be unto us His Body and Blood.

For, on the night He was betrayed

He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to His disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And after supper

He took the cup of wine:and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Let faith and love increase in us.

Unite us with all Bishops, all other ministers of your Word and Sacraments, and with the whole people of God, living and departed, whom you have made for yourself.
