Welcome to St BarnabasOur parish has been ‘serving and encouraging’ the people living, working or passing through this corner of Pimlico since 1850. St Barnabas, from Cyprus, was a fellow Apostle and missionary with St Paul, travelling widely until his martyrdom in 61AD. Originally called Joseph the apostles renamed him ‘Barnabas’ which means ‘Son of Encouragement’. We worship today in this beautiful Grade 1 listed building. If this is your first time visiting us and you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

• NOTICES •† Thank you to those who cleaned both last Saturday and yesterday.† Brendan Shanahan takes over as the headteacher of our parish school at the beginning of term. Please hold him, and the rest of the school community, in your prayers as the new school year begins.† The St Barnabas Bible Study group will be meeting in church on Tuesday 4th September at 7pm. If you would like to attend, please either email the convenor, Amanda Wright or William know.† Selwyn will be back on Wednesday 5th September.† Alex Norris will be preaching on Sunday 9th September. Fortunately, he is not going far, just around the corner to St Michael’s Chester Square.† The next St Barnabas Supper Club will be on Friday 14th September at 7pm – venue to be confirmed.† Fr John will be on holiday from Monday 17th September for two weeks. OLD TESTAMENT READING Song of Solomon 2.8-13The voice of my beloved!   Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains,   bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle   or a young stag.Look, there he stands   behind our wall, gazing in at the windows,   looking through the lattice. My beloved speaks and says to me:‘Arise, my love, my fair one,   and come away; for now the winter is past,   the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth;   the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtle-dove   is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs,   and the vines are in blossom;   they give forth fragrance.Arise, my love, my fair one,   and come away. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL Psalm 45 (refrain tune Franconia)Refrain/ My heart, address the King: Thy beauties are divine; Thy lips with blessings overflow, And every grace is thine.Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. R/All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia: out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. R/

NEW TESTAMENT READING James 1.17-end Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfilment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing. If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.All standGOSPEL ACCLAMATION Refrain/Alleluia.Welcome with meekness the implanted word: That has the power to save your souls. R/The Lord be with you And with thy spirit. Hear the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to John.Glory be to thee, O Lord.

GOSPEL READING Mark 7.1-8, 14, 15, 21-23Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?’ He said to them, ‘Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,“This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far fromme; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.” You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.’ Then he called the crowd again and said to them, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.’ For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise be to thee, O Christ.SERMON Fr John

It is our custom at St Barnabas to remain quietly seated during the voluntary.

Refreshments are served at the back of church.

The Calvary Chapel (North Aisle, West End)C1910 – Reputed to be Bavarian made in Oberammergau. The words ‘So God loved the world’ are stencilled onto a background which echoes decorative work throughout the church. Corpus Christi (Jesus) is attached to a plain Latin cross. Jesus is depicted as bearded, eyes closed, bowed head, wearing a crown of thorns (which appears to be currently dislodged). Jesus is draped with a golden perizonium (a form of loin cloth). The Virgin Mary stands to the left of the group. Her head is hooded, with a nimbus (halo) and she wears black garments edged in gold. She is wearing shoes. St John is on the right-hand side, bare headed, also with a nimbus. His hands are clasped in prayer and his feet are bare.Calvary, or Golgotha (Biblical Greek Γολγοθᾶ[ς] Golgotha[s], traditionally interpreted as reflecting Syriac (Aramaic) golgolta, as it were Hebrew gulgōleṯ (skull), was, according to the Gospels, a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was crucified. The gospel of Mark and Matthew translate the term to mean "place of [the] skull" (Κρανίου Τόπος Kraníou Tópos), in Latin rendered Calvariæ Locus, from which the English word Calvary derives.

This chapel is most commonly used by the congregation of the Melkite Church, who are based at St Barnabas. You will also notice that there is an image and a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in this chapel.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe, is a Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with a venerated image enshrined within the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The basilica is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world, and the world's third most-visited sacred site. Pope Leo XIII granted the venerated image a Canonical Coronation on 12 October 1895.
