President’s MessageIt’s July already, and our “Road to DC” is in the final stretch. The national Healthcare Documentation Integrity Conference is just a few weeks away. As you know, we are the ‘host’ region this year as the conference is being held in Alexandria, Virginia. This doesn’t happen very often, so I hope to have many from our region attend this wonderful educational and networking opportunity. This year is 2 conferences in one as we are holding this in conjunction with AHIMA’s Clinical Documentation Improvement Summit. The online brochure, interactive schedule, and registration can all be found at http://www.ahdionline.org. It looks very exciting!!

Because the national conference is in our region, we won’t be having our usual annual meeting in the fall. We are having the “AHDI-NEMA Connection,” a regional component event for NEMA members and friends, at the beginning of our national conference. This will be held Thursday afternoon from 3 til 5:00 in the Arbors Room. Make plans to attend so you can meet other members from your region as well as some of the National Leadership Board members. We’ll have refreshments and activities and education, too. To encourage attendance, taking into consideration the cost of attending this conference already, we are able to have this event without charging a fee to attend. We think it will be a great way to kick off the HDIC.

In addition, AHDI-NEMA is one of the sponsors for Friday evening’s ‘walking public service announcement’ T-shirts. This is a continuation of the MT Week theme of Patient Care Documentation Brought to Life. After a casual reception, attendees will be encouraged to wear their t-shirts and take ‘selfies’ as they go sightseeing around Alexandria and Washington DC.

I so appreciate having some of our open positions now filled with very talented and dedicated professionals. And now we have a new Treasurer, Shirley Howard, CHDS, who also happens to be the current president of the Ohio Valley Chapter of AHDI. Congratulations to Shirley, and we’re happy to have you on the board!

Your regional component always has opportunities for you to get involved. Share your talents and help AHDI-NEMA remain active and vital. Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization. In fact, without our volunteers, we don’t exist. It’s that simple. From fundraising, to working to grow our membership, to helping to plan a meeting, there are tasks that, done as part of a team, take a little time and give a great deal more in return: results and successes for our region, as well as achievement, new connections, and fun for you.

There is so much transition occurring in our industry. Healthcare documentation is changing for sure, and AHDI is working very hard in cooperation with other organizations to be sure the value of our skills in assuring accuracy and quality in patient care is recognized. This takes time, and I believe the tide will turn in our direction. We need to be prepared to use our skills in possibly different ways. I saw a quote recently that I now have on my desk. From Andrew McAfee, PhD, a research scientist: “There has always been job destruction because of automation and technological progress. The important thing to keep in mind is that there has also always been job creation because of the same fo

The word from Southeastern Virginia is HOT. It’s really been a very HOT late spring/early summer here with several strong storms coming through. Keep hydrated and cool if you’re in this situation, but have fun with family and friends because summer will fly by, as usual, and it will be Fall and time for school before you know it!

HEALTHCARE DOCUMENTATION INTEGRITY CONFERENCE

If you haven’t signed up for AHDI’s annual conference in Alexandria, VA, August 7-8, 2015 there is still time to do so. This year is exciting because for the first time AHDI is partnering with AHIMA and its CDI Summit August 6-7, 2015. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, network with your colleagues and attend sessions that will broaden your knowledge of healthcare documentation as well as a first-hand look at health information management topics. Go to the AHDI website at www.ahdionline.org/ACE to register, see the Schedule of Events and make a reservation for the conference hotel. AHDI especially needs YOUR support of our annual face-to-face meeting.

YOU CAN BE A STAR!

Since nothing speaks more powerfully than telling your personal story, AHDI is looking for short video submissions in support of the importance of a credentialed workforce and the value you bring to documentation, accuracy and patient safety. Learn everything you need to know about creating your own HDS story at Video Guidelines. Whether you are a healthcare documentation specialist, speech recognition editor, educator or manager, why not tell your story digitally and share insight into the value that you bring to the table. Videos can also be filmed during the HDIC in Alexandria. The deadline for submissions is 8/10/15. There are prizes for the top submissions so get yours in soon.

Susan Dooley,MHA, CMT, AHDI-F, will end her year as AHDI President on 8/31/15 and Jay Vance, CMT, CHP will step into the presidency on 9/1/15. Who will be President-Elect for 2015-2016? You’ll hear the news in August because the NLB will be voting for President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer at the Board meeting on Thursday, 8/6/15 in Alexandria.

Look for a new AHDI website and association management platform in the Fall. AHDI is transitioning over to YourMembership.com in September so keep an eye out for further information coming your way in the near future.

Some exciting news from the NLB:

--Plans are being made for the 2016 HDIC. The city of choice will be announced at the HDIC in Alexandria.

--Compensation Best Practices Toolkit was presented at the June NLB meeting and approved. Information will be presented at the HDIC with a panel discussion of what is included in the toolkit on this important topic. It’s been a long time coming but now it’s here!

--The Book of Style will soon be getting an update and new title. Work will start on the revision in upcoming months and into 2016. This will be a huge undertaking but is so important for our membership and industry.

A “pay it forward” program to offer membership to healthcare documentation specialists experiencing hardship.

When hardship impacts our career and earnings, belonging to and being active in an association can be a crucial ingredient in plotting our next career move. By pooling our funds together, we can help fellow MTs/healthcare documentation specialists gain access to the valuable continuing education, tools, and relationships available through membership to propel them to the next great opportunity.

Is it your time to pay it forward? You can make a donation by clicking this link: http://ahdionline.blogspot.com/2014/07/random-acts-of-kindness-membership.html

Thank you for sharing!

As always, AHDI members are encouraged to attend our National Leadership Board meetings which are held the 4th Monday of each month from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Eastern time. An individual link to our meetings can be obtained by emailing Linda at [email protected]. You’re always welcome, and we love to see gallery members in attendance! It’s a great way for you to keep in the loop with what’s happening on the national level.

Check out Speech Recognition Errors: Funny or Fatal. Over 1,100 members in this group and yes--funny, fatal and very scary at the same time.

FUNDRAISING We still are encouraging members, friends and family to use the AHDI-NEMA Website to link to when  shopping on Ebay or Amazon.  There is also the link to the recycling program that we have been using. Please check the website for information on what you can send in and where.  These are easy ways to help build our treasury.  I will be at the AHDI National meeting in Alexandria and would welcome any new ideas anyone has for fundraising.  Since the cookbook, our ideas have dwindled.   If you are not attending the meeting and have some ideas we would gladly take them into consideration. Thanks for all your help. Sharon Parker, CMT, AHDI-F

 Introducing Kirk Calabrese

Thank you for electing me to the AHDI Board of Directors.  I reside in upstate New York and work out of my home office as a computer help desk technician for Mmodal primarily helping healthcare documentation specialists. I worked as a transcriptionist/editor for local hospitals in upstate NY and worked virtually from home for close to 20 years. In approximately my 15th year working as a Medical Transcriptionist I took the Certified Medical Transcriptionist exam and passed it becoming a CMT.  I worked as a service team manager for approximately 4 years for the former MTSO Execuscribe.     My education includes a masters degree in Policy Studies, a bachelors in English, and an Associates of Applied Sciences in Information Technology.  I serve as a volunteer on the AHDI Research and Development Committee writing feature articles and quizzes for Plexus magazine.   I recently joined the Plexus editing team a couple of months ago and am editing Plexus proofs.  Also I worked with the RMT exam preparation team in drafting questions for the RMT Exam Guide.  I look forward to the opportunity to meet and network with the members of AHDI-NEMA region at the conference in Alexandria! Kirk Calabrese, CMT, Network+ Certified ProfessionalIT Consultant
