WHAT TO DO TO UNDERSTAND A NEW WORD

Before starting reading our book, I am going to give you some tips to help you

understand the stories, don’t worry if at the beginning you don’t understand the

meaning of some words, the important thing is to enjoy the stories.

VOCABULARY IN CONTEXT

As you read, you often come across new words that you don’t understand. In many cases, you can read on

and use other words nearby, pictures or missing pictures in the story to figure out what an unfamiliar word

means. Doing this is called ¨using context clues¨ (claves). Context are the sentences and ideas around the

unfamiliar word.

The chart on the next page shows how you might use context clues. The new word is written in RED, and

the possible clues are highlighted in purple for you.

NEW WORD IN CONTEXT

“Lucy had six brothers. They were all very loud. Sometimes they yelled.

USING CONTEXT CLUES

I’m reading about six boys that are very loud, this means that they make lots of noise, so yelled must mean shout (gritar)

Now you know that yell means shout, not only by the context, but also by the picture, too.

Subject Predicate

A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought (pensamiento).

A sentence names someone or something. It tells what that person or thing does.

Every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with an end mark.

The words are in an order that makes sense.

A declarative (affirmative) sentence tells something. It ends with a period (punto).

An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark (?).

An exclamatory sentence: What a beautiful beach!

Imperative sentence: Stop talking!

Every sentence has two parts. A subject and a predicate.

A subject or naming part tells whom or what a sentence is about.

A predicate or telling part tells what that person or thing is or does.

Example: Lucy had six brothers.
