FOREWORD
This is a brief write-up by Dr. J.B. Venkat Rau on the subject of
the most important Shiva Kshetras of India. The holiest of the holy
are the twelve Jyothirlingas of Bharat. The five Panchabhuteswara
Lingas of the South, and finally the five Aarama Lingas of Andhra
Pradesh are described in this book. The brief facts based on Puranic
lore are presented by the author in respect of all these Shiva Kshetras.
Worship of Shiva in the form of Linga is the most ancient
practice which can be, historically speaking, traced to Sri Ramayan
times. Ravana worshipped the Linga at home as well as Sri Rudra
Mahadeva in Kailas. The Ramayana describes the city of Lanka as
the abode of nine crores of Shiva Lingas - (Nava Koti Sivalayamulu).
The concept of Atma Linga of Sri Rudra Mahadeva as the ultimate
source and terminal of all Shiva Lingas worshipped in the world is
presented in an episode describing Ravana seeking the Atma Linga
of Sri Rudra Mahadeva. Jyothirlinga is the pure light realized by the
worshipper who worships Shiva in the twelve Jyothirlinga Kshetras.
Dr. J.B. Venkat Rau is a great devotee of Sri Sathya Sai Baba
whose inspiration is responsible for this write-up. I am sure that this
book will be received by the devotee-readers with devotion for better
understanding of the Shiva worship. I congratulate the author.

FOREWORD
I am delighted to write the foreword to the book Dwadasa
Jyothirlingas written by Prof. J.B. Venkat Rau. There are many number
of Shiva and Parvati temples in India. Some of them are famous
pilgrimage centres such as Madura Meenakshi Temple, Chidambaram
Temple and Somnath Temple of Gujarat. When twelve temples are
desquamated as Jyothirlingas, one is inclined to question the basis of
this and also the importance of these centres for pilgrimage.
Prof. J.B. Venkat Rau has attempted in this book to provide the
much needed information in appropriate description to the discerning
devotees. The symbolism of the narration given in this book is
something to be explored by the inquisitive minds. The information
given is enlightening and at the same time it rouses interest and
inculcates creative thinking in our mythology.

SHIVA:
Shiva is the first trinity the God representing, creation, sustenance
and dissolution i.e., Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra. Shiva, is one in whom the
Universe merges after dissolution before the next cycle of creation. The
inviolable law is that all His creation ends in dissolution . He is limitless
controlling the Limited Universe He Creates. Shiva is worshipped in
anthropomorphic (human body and its parts) and Linga form. The former
in uthsavas (celebrations) and the latter linga form for worship commonly
used in temples.
Matted Hair:
Shiva adorns Himself decorates with river ganga, crescent moon
on the head and white coloured, serpents, trident, damaru, wears tiger skin,
garland of skull around the neck and a begging bowl in hand.
The Various names of Shiva are :
Samba shiva, Eswara, Bhaktavatsala, Subha Shankara,
Neela Kanta, Mrutunjaya, Kaamaari, Digambara and Yogasikha.
The secret of creation is evident from the description i.e.,
anthropomorphic form of Shiva. Shiva resides on a silver mountain, white
in colour, possesses matted hair on the head, Ganga emerging from it and
crescent moon on one side. The crescent moon symbolises the consciousness
in the human beings and confers peace of mind on mankind. The moon
light marks out the pilgrim’s route to god and make the journey less toilsome.
The Ganga symbolises the life-force and snakes on his body i.e., around
neck, arms as bracelets and around the waist as sacred thread
(Yagnopaveetham) and all the snakes on the body represents myriads of
filling beings, (maya, illusions).
He has four hands having a trident in one hand, removes bad vasanas,
which is symbolic of the past, the present and the future, the three aspects
of time and also three gunas Satwa, Rajas and Thamasa and trinity Brahma,
Vishnu and Rudra, Damaru (small drum), abhaya hasta (protection) and
varada hasta (boon bestowing). Shiva sounds damaru, fourteen times
while dancing Tandava natya, cosmic dance which are known as
“Maheswara sutras”, the fourteen basic formulae containing alphabets
useful for grammar. Hence the damaru represents the alphabets, and
grammar (the science of language). The alphabets stands for all words
spoken or written or otherwise expressed. The sound produced also spreads

INTRODUCTION:
At the outset I am grateful and deeply indebted to Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba,
an incarnation of Kaliyuga and premaswaroopa for using me as His instrument in writing the
Jyothirlingas in English which caters to youth and in particular those who are conversant
with the English language. They are twelve in number, present all over India and these are
manifestations of the Lord of Kailasa and the Universe. Shiva and Parvathi, are the Universal
Father and Mother. The Shiva Linga represents Shiva and also Panchabhootas i.e., five
elements (Ether, Air, Fire, Water and earth) controlled by Shiva. Similarly, these elements are
also present in the living beings as a part of Universe, hence in mankind. The Lingas teach the
humanity to perform sadhana in order to control the Panchabhootas present in them to attain
liberation and salvation (Moksha). The lingas shed splendour and disperse cosmic rays and
disseminate the cosmic energy into the universe eliminating bad qualities and imbibing good
and virtuous qualities for acquiring sathya, dharma, shanti, prema (Love) ahimsa and bliss
(ananda).
Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has come to wake up the mankind immersed in
physical pleasures following adharma and to make them realize the atmic principle (Soul) in
the journey towards the God. Bhagvan Sri Sathya Sai Baba proclaimed “Sri Shiridi Sai Baba
is Shiva Swaroopa, presently Sri Sathya Sai Baba as Shiva-shakti Swaroopa and the forthcoming
Sri Prema Sai Baba as the Shakthi form (Shakthi Swaroopa)”. As the three Sai Avatharas are
following one another in the Kaliyuga, it is appropriate the kaliyuga may be termed
“Saiyuga” and fill the hearts with divine qualities. These incarnations in the Sai Yuga teach,
Love-cosmic Love which eliminates bad qualities thereby transform the humanity. They
guide the humanity and mankind towards the path of truth and righteousness to reach the
goal of liberation.
The Pilgrimage and Darshan of the Jyothirlingas help to lead a virtuous life and the
stories of these manifestations inculcate eternal peace. The daily recitation of the stothras
of Jyothirlingas help to attain the goal. The Jyothirlingas are prepared in a booklet form as
it gives information regarding geographical location and places to travel. Further Dharshan
of these Lingas motivate the mind towards God during their Journey of Life. The book helps
to read during pilgrimage and travel.
The Pancha Shiva Aaramamulu and Pancha Bhoota Lingas are also included for
completion as these are also important pilgrimage centers. I pray Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai
Baba to bestow His grace on those who read the Lingas, Sthuthi and direct their mind towards
the God and bless them with celestial bliss.

Nirajanam, Sanathanam, Nikestanam, Nithya, Suddha, Buddha, Muktha and
the various Nirmala Swarupinam (beyond qualities, untainted, eternal, ever
abiding, ever pure, intelligent, liberated and immaculate). Out of senses
weakness, man assumes that these attribute only relate to Divine and not
to him. This feeling should be totally eschewed (S.S.S Vol XXVI — P -
188).
Two types of Lingas are known (a) Achala - immovable, stone
form present in temples and (b) Chala – movable, prepared with stone,
clay or dough worshipped in homes and after worship, stone lingas are
washed for next worship. The clay and dough lingas are dispensed after
worship. The linga constitutes three parts i.e., the base, middle, upper parts
also known as Brahmabhaaga, Vishnubhaaga and Rudra or pooja bhaaga
respectively. The Brahma and Vishnu bhaagas are embedded in a pedestal
and pooja bhaaga above the ground. It is five faced, - Isana, Tatpurusha,
Aghora, Vamadeva and Sadyojata. Isana, turns towards Zenith, represents
the highest aspect, also called Sadashiva. It rules and controls the sky
(Ether) on spiritual plane, the deity for liberation. The Tatpurusha faces
east and controls air which represents the forces of darkness and obscuration.
The Aghora faces south controls the element fire, stands for the power
that renovates the Universe. The Vamadeva faces the north, ruling over
the elements of water is responsible for preservation. The Sadyojata faces
west and rules over the element of earth, representing the power that creates.
The pooja bhaaga controls the Panchabhootas in it, thus help to do sadhana
for liberation. ‘There are twelve Jyotirlingas in the Bharat (India) and these
were manifested by Shiva Himself at the behest of devotees for the good
and auspiciousness of the Universe and its protection.
The linga is the form of God emerging from the nirakara to the
sakara. All other akara’s (forms) are all subsumed in the linga form. Prakrithi
or the objective world is the base. It signifies that the lord is established in
that manifestation of His, which is the concrete presentation of His play.
His potentiality and His power, His shakti. That is why Lord is described as
Shiva Shakti, Atmaka Swarupam. (S.S.S Vol VIII— Past 127).
SIVAM:
Sivam of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s mandir in Hyderabad is
not mere a building with Shivalingam. It is also a form of God emerging
from the Nirakara to Sakara. The Prakriti or the objective world is the
base, it signifies that the lord is established in that Bhagvan Baba’s
including arts and sciences proceed out of His will, His play. He wears
tiger skin which removes thamas a qualities, and wears garlands of skulls
around the neck. Long retinue of Nandi and other Ganas always follow
him. He lives in Aadipalli area of Kailasa of Himalaya mountains covered
with snow rendering enchanting beauty. His dearest friend is Kubera, the
lord of wealth. Why He carries begging bowl in spite of all the great wealth
and supreme qualities? It is to demonstrate to the world that every kind of
wealth is hindrance to spiritual advancement or path and renounced
everything. It is through renunciation Shiva became the eternal embodiment
of supreme bliss
His other names are “Sambasiva”, “Eswara” (yogasikha)
“Bhuthanaatha”, ‘Subha Shankara”. “Digambara”, “Mrutunjaya”,
“Sambasiva” — Sam means divinity and Amba refers to the cosmos. Shiva
means supreme purusha (Supreme Person). Yogashikha or Eswara means
the sky is His blue form. The dikkulu (directions) are His garments. Hence
He is known as digambara. Also known as panchanana, the five headed
one. The five are panchabhootas i.e., Ether Air, Fire, Water and Earth
(Sabda, Sparsa, Roopa, Rasa, Gandha) the lord of all created beings and
objects. Shiva is also known as Subha Sankara i.e.. represents
auspiciousness (Subham). He did not carry Sri appellation as Sankara
and Shiva indicates auspiciousness and purity. His neck is blue as He
swallowed poison (Haala-Halam) for the sake of . universal good. It keeps
under Restraints the qualities and tendencies in us that are antisocial,
poisonous, hatred and competitive greeds. (S.S.S Vol XXIII Page 22 - 24.)
He vanquished death, hence called Mruthyunjaya and also Kaamaari
(destroyer of desire). He helps humanity at large to realise the truth and
demonstrate in thought, word and deed because the truth is the basis of His
existence. The truth when once realised makes the man strong, steady,
free from lust, hatred, greed and anger (S.S.S Vol XII P15)
SHIVA LINGAM:
Linga is a word from Sanskrit. Linga, Li means Leeyathe — merges.
It is the form in which all forms merge. Linga is a sign or symbol of Shiva.
The Linga form is manifestation of Shiva, worshipped regularly in
temples and also in homes. For intense devotion, Linga form is preferred
and popular belief is that it bestows Asta - Aiswaryas and liberation.. Eswara
means Aiswarya (Wealth). The Divine is described, possessing eight forms
of wealth. In fact man also endows with all the Astaiswaryas i.e, Nirgunam,

the highest aspect, also called Sadashiva.

On 18th February 2004 i.e., MAHA SHIVARATHRI day, around
6 p.m . Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, brought out orally a Golden Lingam,
a few minutes later brought out two more lingas and displayed to all the
devotees gathered. They are disperising light all around. He later described
about these lingas “ They are symbol or sign of the Lord shiva and His
manifestation. They are solid, gold and contain copper, silver, lead and uranium
and other metals. The Cosmic lingas i.e., ATMA LINGAS present in HIM
and also such lingas are in all human beings but the latter is not aware of
their presence in the body. The cosmic rays from the lingas travel in the
north direction from Prashanti Nilayam and the cosmic rays manifest as
more shiva lingas in areas they spread or pass in due course of time.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba is a Lingodbhava Moorthy. In His Maha-
Shivarathri discourse He proclaimed that in Shiridhi Sai Avatara He swallowed
these lingas and bringing out those lingas in this Avatar and further
emphasised that those who witnessed the celestial Miracle will not
have another birth. Thus Shiva is a protector of the Universe, showing
the path of truth, dharma and the people get liberated from the cycle of
births and rebirths and finally merge with Him which is the goal of human
life. He said that He lost three tons of weight as the lingas emerging from
the body and His body became light.
PANCHARAMALU:
Pancharamalu are FIVE shiva linga pilgrimages, present in the
Andhra Pradesh of India. The area enclosed in the other three shiva linga
pilgrimage temples viz., srikalahasthi, srisailam and Draksharamam is called
“TRILINGA DESAM” and the people are known as “TRILINGALU”
and gradually changed to “TELENGANA” and prestently as “TELUGU

HIRANYAGARBHA:
The principle, Hiranyagarbha is present in every individual. Hiranya
means gold. When the gold is mixed with other metals like copper, silver or
brass it loses its value, brilliance and identity. Hence it is difficult to distinguish
gold from copper, silver and brass. Similarly man’s heart, which is Hiranmaya
is losing its brilliance, value and identity on account of association with
vishaya vasanas (sensual desires). Consequently it is impossible to
ascertain whether one is a human being or an animal or a devil or demon.
There is no love at all in human beings today. Life devoid of love is a devil’s
life. Man is leading the life of demon unaware of path of truth, righteousness,
peace and love. God has not created creatures such as devils and evil
spirits. These are creations of man (S.S.S Mar 99, P-57.)

enunciated love and compassion are tools for liberation. Sri Sathya Sai
Baba used to bring out Lingas on every Maha Shivarathri Day and stopped
for a period of two decades. But in the year 1999 to 2004 on Maha-
Shivarathri day, Baba brought out Lingas from His mouth. Lord Shiva appears
in these Lingas. On the Maha-Shivarathri day of 2003 with a request
and prayer of a devotee Bhagawan Baba created a Golden Lingam with
just wave of hand and in the night, another Golden Lingam ejected from the

where Sri Vaidyanatha Lingam was installed by Lord Shiva. Santhal is 21Kms from Vidyanath Dham and Buses and Autorikshaws are available. The Lingam is 30 cms in length, and a depression is present on the top of it.It is a popular belief, even today, that the people, with faith who doAbhishekam with sacred river waters, get rid of all sins committed, andwhen associating with Sathsang (association with good and pious society)get freed from all Karmic actions, and when totally surrendered get liberated.
Ravana, the ruler of Sri Lanka, meditated on Shiva, near Kailasam, for many years and not getting Darshan, started chopping off, one after theother, his nine heads, and thus sacrificed them. When about to sacrifice histenth head, Shiva appeared, caught his hand, blessed him and granted boons. All the heads were restored and Ravana sought His Atma Lingam. Shivagranted his desire, gave His Atma lingam, on the condition that it should notbe kept on the earth, and install it in Lanka and pray daily. Ravana readilyconsented and was immensely happy. On the way, while carrying the Lingam,Sandhya time (daily Divine Prayer) approached. He found a small boy (noother than Lord Ganesh) and handed over to him the Lingam, and cautionedhim not to keep It on the ground, till he comes back. The boy could not bearthe increasing weight of the Lingam, cried, and before Ravana’s arrival, kept the Lingam on the ground. In spite of all his strength, Ravana failed tolift It from the ground. Ravana left the Atma lingam there, and put histhumb on the top of the Lingam. Thus the impression is seen even today inspite of thousands of years.

Santhal is a place near the Vaidyanatha dham, in the Bihar State,
where Sri Vaidyanatha Lingam was installed by Lord Shiva.

Nara and Narayana (Arjuna and Krishna) performed meditation
on Lord Shiva, for years and also maditated standing on one leg, without
food. Appreciating their intense Thapas (meditation) Brahma, Maha Vishnu
and others gathered there. They appealed to Lord Shiva and Parvathi to
stay back on the mount. The Divine couple granted their wish.
Another story described in the spiritual texts is thus. In Dwapara
Yuga, after killing Kauravas and their army, in the Kurukshetra battle, the
Pandava princes felt guilty of sin. To atone the sin and get liberated from
it, they meditated on Lord Shiva, sitting on mount Kailasa. After a long
period, they found that the Lord had left Kailasam. They started searching
for Him. They found the Lord in the guise of a Cow at Rudra Prayag,
grazing with other cows. They chased the Cow but It went to the mount
Kedarnath and mixed with other cows. Bhima, the strongest among all
Pandavas ran after the cows and keeping one foot on Kedarnath and the
other on mount Badiri observed the cows. He identified the disguised
Cow, ran and caught hold of Its trunk strongly. But the forepart of the
Cow disappeared and only the distal part in his grip remained with him.
The Lord appreciated their intense and consistent devotion, gave Darshan,
blessed them and liberated them from the sin. They prayed to Lord Shiva
to install His form with Mother Parvathi in that place. The Divine Couple
readily obliged. The Kedarnath Lingam represents only the trunk of the
Bull, unlike other classical Jyotirlingas. It is a belief, that the forepart of the
Bull detached itself and formed a Lingam, which is in Khatmandu in Nepal
and known as Pasupathinath Lingam. Those who visit Kedarnath also
visit Pasupathinath and offer prayers to Lingam. Thus the pilgrims complete
the pilgrimage. Those who visit and pray at Kedarnath are bestowed with
divine wisdom and attain Moksha.

The Kedarnath Jyothirlingam is located on the top of mount
Kedarnath, in the Himalayas. The route involves Delhi – Haridhwar,
Rushikesh, Gowri Kundh, from here the Pilgrims go on foot or by pony
and reach Kedarnath. The rivers, Mandakini and Alakananda are on the
western and eastern sides of the mountain respectively. Mandakini starts
from the feet of Lord Kedarnath. The two rivers join with each another at
Rudraprayag and the river Bhagirathi joins it at Devaprayag, and finally
the river Ganga is formed. Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says that there
is no other river like Ganga, no song like Geeta and no mantra like Gayatri
(Divine prayer) . Thus Bhagavan Baba described the sanctity and purity
of the river Ganga. The scenario is delightful to the eye, with green forests
around and sides of mountains covered with ice, clouds touching the hills
and the rivers flowing gently and smoothly with clear water. This was a
rendezvous for sages, sadhus and seekers of truth.
The pilgrims, after crossing Rudraprayag and Devaprayag, trek to
reach the top of mount Kedarnath. The path is on one side of mount
Kedarnath and on the other side river Mandakini is flowing. The journey
is on foot, by pony or jola (chair with four legs which Sherpas carry).
After reaching the top of Kedarnath, the pilgrims, devoid of body
pains and stress and strain of the journey, enjoy the divine bliss.

The train services are availablefrom all major cities in India i.e. Vijayawada, Vishakhapatnam, Hyderabad,Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Chennai etc., It was believed that Varanasi isalways protected from cyclones and hurricanes by Lord Vishwanath’s Trisul(three pronged weapon). Mahavishnu, during his creation of universe, prayed to Lord Shiva, to protect it from evil and natural calamities. LordShiva appeared and granted His wish, and installed Himself with motherParvathi. The great Agasthya also meditated for the same. It is mentionedthat this was the first Jyotirlingam manifested by Shiva’s Grace. Thusthe universal Sanathana couple presented as Kasi Vishwanath and AnnapurnaDevi. After marriage, the Lord was living with Parvathi, for a long time, inHis father's-in-law place. (Himavanthu of Himalayas). Parvathi, oncebroached to Lord Shiva that they better go to Kailasam as, it was a custom, for the bridegroom to take his bride to His place, and live together. LordShiva granted Her wish, but moved to Varanasi. (probably they were thefirst citizens of Bharat). It is believed that those who die in Varanasi withfaith, hear the Lord speaking to them, Taraka Manthram (divine mantra)and get liberated and merge with the Paramatma.
Surrounding Kasi (Varanasi) are pilgrimage centers,Omkarakandam in the North, Kadarakandam in the south,Vishweswarakandam, in the middle (present Kasi). Those who takeDarshan of the Lingam, will be free from all diseases and are awardedMoksha, by the Grace of Lord Vishwanath.

The Bhimeswara Lingam presently is on the Brahmapuri mountain,
near Gauhati, Assam State, North-Eastern Part of India. Regarding the
geographical location of the lingam a difference of opnion is present.
According to one view the Bhimeswara Lingam is present on the
Brahmapuri Mountain in Assam and another view is that it is in a village
Bhimabankaram, 75 KMs. from Pune of Maharastra State. But the story
in the scriptures, manifestation of lingam and the demon involved are one
and the same. Bhima, son of Kumbhakarna, living in the Dhakini areas
enquired about his father. His mother informed him that his father was
killed by Rama, the incarnation of Maha Vishnu. Bhima developed hatred
towards Rama and meditated thousand years on Brahma, to take vengence,
on Rama. Brahma gave him great strength (divine Shakti) and blessed
him. His ego increased day by day, and he waged war on Indra, Maha
Vishnu and Devas, sending them off their abodes and later conquered all
the world. Thus ruling the world he extended, atrocities on other celestials
and sages performing Yagnas. Later he vanquished Sudhikshna king of
Kamarupam and imprisoned him. The people in all the Lokas (worlds),
Brahma and Maha Vishnu, prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva gave Darshan
to all and agreed to kill the demon, and reduced the demon to ashes. The
assembly appealed to Lord Shiva to install Himself in Linga form, and thus
Sri Bhimeswara Linga manifested.

Sri Vishweswara Jyotir Lingam is on the bank of the river Ganga,in the city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
Those who takeDarshan of the Lingam, will be free from all diseases and are awardedMoksha, by the Grace of Lord Vishwanath.

the 100 earthen Linga Puja (Prayers) and immersed them, in the tank. To
her surprise, she saw her son coming out of the water tank. Lord Shiva
also appeared, blessed her and her son and threatened to destroy her
sister Sudheha. But Ghrusma Devi prayed and praised Lord Shiva in
many a way for granting Darshan and restoring back her son alive, and
appealed to spare her sister’s life, and stay in that place. Lord Shiva, the
