Third Sunday of Easter How appropriate today’s Gospel for this Jubilee Year of Mercy, both because of the “breakfast” Jesus provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread”) and the number of fish in Peter’s net (“one hundred fifty-three”) (John 21:11–12). Of the fish, Saint Augustine suggests that the roasted fish is the suffering Christ. Saint Gregory the Great adds that Christ lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our humanity; to be caught in the “net” of our death; to be “roasted” in his Passion on the fire of suffering. Saint Jerome claims that “one hundred fifty-three” represents the full number of known spe-cies of fish, signifying that the Church’s “net” has room for all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-in-diversity in the hands of Peter and his successors. Having received God’s mercy as “the beating heart of the Gospel,” may the Church—we—“pattern [our] behavior after the Son of God who went out to everyone without ex-ception” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).
As many of you know, I had to un-dergo emergency surgery to have my appendix removed. This occurred at the most inconvenient time for a priest….Tuesday of Holy Week. There was nothing I could do. I began to
make arrangements for my absence as I was being taken to the hospital late Monday night of Holy Week. I contacted Father Fasano and Deacon Costello. Both assured me that everything would be taken care of, and it was. Their concern for me, and their awareness of what needed to be done in the parishes, assured me that there was nothing to worry about. I was able to fully enter into the process, addressing the de-cisions that would need to be made in a matter of a couple of hours regarding my health. I want to thank Father Fasano, Deacon Tom, and Deacon Dan for making sure Holy Week and Easter was a faithful encounter of the Pascal Mystery. Also, I am thankful to Father Norbert and Father Drew for their support, and willingness to lend a hand to make sure that the Liturgical schedule was covered. Also, I need to thank Father Norbert’s friend, Father Augustine. At the last minute, he made himself available to help out, coming in from Bay Shore. I am very grateful to Bishop Robert Brennan for his celebration of the Easter Vigil at Saint Joseph’s. Bish-op Brennan has a very intense schedule. In spite of that, he made sure he would be able to celebrate the vigil that evening. Last, but certainly not least, I must point out the un-believable staff members of the three parishes of the Five Towns. Every one of them stepped up, and did what needed to be done to make sure that day to day obligations were attended to. Thank you!!! A lot of what you do for our parishes goes unseen. We would not be the vibrant Community of Faith we are, if it wasn’t for your dedication and service to God’s people. To those of you who sent cards, and prayers, thank you. You have no idea how they helped me through a very difficult situation. May God Bless you for your goodness. God Bless us all.
The Second Graders of the Parishes of the Five Towns will be receiving their First Holy Communion in the next few weeks. In past years, the reception of First Holy Communion took place separate from the Community at a Mass celebrated on the First Saturday of May. In consultation with the priests, deacons, Religious Education personnel and the Liturgy Committee, it has been decided that these celebrations should be a part of Sunday Mass in the presence of the Community. With this in mind please note the following:
FIRST COMMUNION WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE FOLLOWING PARISH SUNDAY MASSES.
Sunday, April 17, 2016 - 12:00 Noon - Saint Joseph Sunday, May 1, 2016 - 12:00 Noon Mass - Saint Joseph Sunday, May 1, 2016 - 9:15 AM Mass - OLGC Sunday, May 1, 2016 - 11:00 AM Mass - OLGC
Please pray for those who will receive The Body and Blood of Christ for the first time.
May God continue to bless them and their families.

The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a Golf Outing to help raise funds to repair the damage to the large round stained glass windows in St. Joseph’s church. While the Knights are sponsoring this fund-
raising event it is truly a parish function.
As a parishioner, can we do more to help? Hopefully, you are planning to attend the golf outing as a golfer or join us at 6:00 pm for cocktails and dinner. You can really help by getting sponsors for hole flags or tee signs. We all patronize local businesses, and it’s easy to ask if they are in-terested and willing to sponsor a hole or hav-ing a tee sign. Hole Flag………..$250. Tee Sign………....$100. Simply have them provide what information they want on the flag or tee-sign (a business card will suffice). Collect the appropriate fee payable to:
Charity Inc. or
St. Joseph Church
Give all the information to one of the ticket sellers outside mass on Sunday morning or
contact
Richard Breen 516-569-6317
Working together we can make this event a success and will soon see the repairs of the beautiful stained glass windows begin.

A reminder to one and all to vote on April 19. In addition to the presidential race, there is a special election to the State Senate in parts of Nassau. This is an important vote for us because there are significant issues that effect the Church and the family such as the Education Tax Credit for religiously based schools; religious freedom and freedom of conscience for our schools and hospitals; and legitimate efforts to limit abortion as a form of contraception. Make your decision for the next state senator from Nassau based on a conscience based on the truths of the Church and of natural law.

Over fifty years ago, actress Dolores Hart shocked Holly-wood when she made a momentous announcement: She was leaving Hollywood to join a contemplative Benedictine monastery! In six years, starring with the biggest names in the industry, she had 10 very successful feature films to her credit, plus TV roles and a Tony Award nomination for her debut on Broadway. And, she was engaged to a Los Angeles architect. But in 1963, she entered the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, CT. Today, Mother Dolores Hart is prioress of the abbey! Mother Dolores has been granted the rare privilege of traveling outside the cloister to talk about her book, “The Ear of the Heart: An Actress’ Journey From Hollywood to Holy Vows”
Statement on Political Responsibility by Cardinal Dolan and the Catholic Bishops of New York State
The good of a democratic republic like ours depends on the participation of its citizens. This may seem obvious but it needs to be insisted upon in today’s American society. The most fundamen-tal action of a good citizen is to vote. All other activities in the political sphere depend on the ex-ercise of this most fundamental right – which is equally a solemn responsibility. Regrettably, in our country today an alarming percentage of citizens do not exercise this right. In New York State, on average over the past four years, only 40% of eligible voters carried out their civic duty. As the Catholic Bishops of New York State, we urge every eligible adult Catholic, without ex-ception, to be sure that he or she is registered to vote and that all EXERCISE THEIR SOLEMN REPONSIBILITY OF VOTING in this year’s elections. If you are not registered to vote, or not sure you are registered, please go to the website www.elections.ny.gov or call 1-800-FOR-VOTE. You may also go to our own New York State Catholic Conference website at www.nyscatholic.org and select “Register to Vote.” We thank you for doing that. Now we want to invite you to prepare to vote by becoming familiar with both the candidates and the issues. Just voting for a name you recognize or a party you be-long to does not fulfill your responsibility to build up a good society where human dignity, per-sonal freedom, care for one another – especially the vulnerable – and the common good prevail as values which should be cherished in our democracy. Sadly, determining who to vote for is not always easy. Pressure groups, especially the loudest ones, seek to shout down anyone who disagrees with them. Calm and thoughtful responses to is-sues are often drowned out. That makes the challenge to choose good candidates and support good programs even more difficult than in the past. But it makes these decisions even more im-portant. We do have resources to help you. One trustworthy resource is the booklet published this year by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. To locate this resource, go to www.usccb.org, click on issues and actions and select faithful citizenship. Based on four of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching – human dignity, subsidiarity, solidarity and the common good – this document will help you evaluate the candidates and the programs they support on the basis of our shared Catholic vision of the good society. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citi-zenship can also help you in supporting candidates who are Pro-Life, pro-family and supportive of those policies that promote the common good of our society. If we want to have a good, healthy and virtuous society, we ourselves need to be good citizens, dedicated to the truth and promoters of the common good. We can contribute significantly to a positive political process and reverse the negative spiral of today’s politics. But that means we must all be one in promoting human life and dignity; families that care for the vulnerable of any age or condition; and freedom and security for all our fellow citizens, as well as for all men and women every nation throughout the world.

CARDINAL DOLAN AND ARCHBISHOP LORI TO CONGRESS: SUPPORT THE CONSCIENCE PROTECTION ACT On March 31, Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Arch-bishop William Lori, chairing the U.S. Bishops’ Com-mittee on Pro-Life Activities and Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty respectively, wrote to House
members urging them to support and co-sponsor H.R. 4828, The Con-science Protection Act. The Conscience Protection Act, they wrote, is "essential legislation pro-tecting the fundamental rights of health care providers…to ensure that those providing much-needed health care and health coverage can contin-ue to do so without being forced by government to help destroy innocent unborn children." Most health care providers do not perform abortions and choose to re-spect vulnerable life at its earliest stages. The government must not force them from the healing profession. HR 4828 has a "modest scope," they noted. "While existing federal laws already protect conscientious objection to abortion in theory, this protec-tion has not proved effective in practice… The Conscience Protection Act will address the deficiencies that block effective enforcement of existing laws, most notably by establishing a private right of action allowing vic-tims of discrimination to defend their own rights in court." Cardinal Dolan and Archbishop Lori recalled the Hippocratic oath's rejection of abortion in the profession of medicine, indicating that the Act will benefit not only Catholic medical professionals but "the great majori-ty of ob/gyns [who] remain unwilling to perform abortions." Finally, they explained that conscience protection facilitates access to life-affirming health care: "When government…mandates involvement in abortion as a condition for being allowed to provide life-affirming health care services, it not only undermines the widely acknowledged civil rights of health care providers but also limits access to good health care for American women and men." For more on the bishops' promotion of conscience rights, including a recent video about a nurse who was coerced to take part in a late-term abortion, visit: www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/conscience-protection.
Third Sunday of Easter April 10, 2016
Tercer Domingo de Pascua 10 de abril de 2016
REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first read-ing, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The pow-erful imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all liv-ing creatures, “countless in number” from “heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that we can all be redeemed so completely!
From the earliest centuries, we know that some Christian women desired to vow themselves to a cel-ibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrating the “Consecration of Virgins,” a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a “veiling” of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of marriage with Christ, partly because in the culture of the day a woman’s status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the consecration of virgins were exact-ly the same as the prayers and ritual for the conse-cration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commitment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrat-ed life.
