  • Meeting to focus on multiculturalism and

UCA marriage paper, doctrine and worship ASSEMBLY consultant on doctrine and worship, Rev. Dr Chris Walker (pictured left), will meet with ministers and members of the UC’s culturally diverse communities in Brisbane on Saturday, September 20.

A key matter for discussion will be the Assembly’s discussion paper on a theology of marriage. Dr Walker is coordinating this project, and will report to the Assembly Standing Committee in November on feedback received.

People will hear from Dr Walker about the origins and purpose of the paper, and be able to share their views, questions and any concerns.

Other matters of multicultural interest in the areas of doctrine and worship will also be discussed.

Organised jointly by South Moreton presbytery and the Synod’s Multi Cross Cultural Committee, it will be held at Wesley Kangaroo Point UC, from 9:00 am-12:30 pm. Please RSVP to David Busch, 0438 646 559 or [email protected].

This meeting is in addition to discussions on the marriage paper which are the focus of the Presbytery’s two regional gatherings in September: Tuesday 9th at Yeronga UC (which Dr Walker will also attend), and Tuesday 16th at Banora Point UC.

    New books look at emerging

    Asian theology, religious pluralism

Grassroots Asian Theology: Thinking the Faith From the Ground Up, by Simon Chan (IVP Academic, 2014). $29.95 from Vision Books, 3849 8548.

AS the numerical weight of Christianity shifts decisively to the “global south” (especially Africa and Asia), what new theological insights will emerge from Christian belief and practice in these contexts? In this engaging and thoughtful book, Chan, a highly regarded Pentecostal theologian from Singapore, shows how faith at the level of family and village in Asia is reinvigorating mainstream Western doctrines such as salvation, the church and the Spirit.

Twentieth Century Christian Responses to Religious Pluralism: Difference is Everything, by David Pitman (Ashgate, 2014). From online booksellers, or $80 + postage from the author: [email protected].

LAUNCHED at Trinity College library last Friday, this book draws on Rev. Dr David Pitman’s doctoral thesis to offer a highly readable, insightful and cogent survey of 10 key theologians (exclusivists, inclusivists and pluralists) on the contentious issue of religious pluralism. David’s perceptive analysis always keeps in mind the implications of each view for interfaith relations.

    Fijians attend golden

jubilee conference FIJIANS from Australia, including South Moreton presbytery, are attending the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma this month.

About 4000 people gathered for the opening rally in Suva last Sunday. On Monday, a poignant reconciliation Communion service was held to heal rifts within the Methodist Church, and in its relations with other churches, which have erupted and simmered during Fiji’s political turmoil of the past 30 years.

The Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma became independent in 1964, after 129 years of being a mission church of the Wesleyan Mission of Great Britain and then the Methodist Church of Australasia.

Rev. Dr Jovili Meo of Brisbane leads prayer during the reconciliation

    service in Suva on Monday.
