Let’s Talk

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – THE NEW KID IN THE ACADEMIC BLOCK

If the twentieth century belonged to scientific innovations, the twenty-firstcentury well and truly belongs to technology. If we take a close look at thetechnological developments that have changed our lives over the pastcouple of decades, we would be able to comprehend that the pace hasbeen phenomenal.

From the rapid transformations in the telecom industry to the conversion ofinternet to a daily necessity, technology has had an irreversible impact onour daily lives.

1

One of the primary fields that have been directly impacted by these developments happens to be the educationsector. There has been a paradigm shift in how education is delivered over the past half a decade or so. Fromsmart classrooms to e-learning, the transition has impacted students and teachers alike. In the face of it all, another concept seems to have catapulted popular imagination. Artificial Intelligence or AI,as it is more popularly known, has been dominating multiple academic discourses. Billed to be the biggestdevelopment in technology, the nascent development can truly propel education to the next logical level. As wemake a shift towards Industry 4.0, it is worth a try to understand the impact of AI on future educationaldeliveries. The same could be elucidated in the form of pointers for our easier understanding: 1.A Personalized Learning Process: We all have seen how the OTT platforms create personalized contentrecommendations for viewers. The same thing could be done in education as well using AI. Let us understand itthis way. All these while, the students had to gulp down everything that was being shoved down their throatwithout a clear understanding of what they were good at. Thanks to AI, learning could be customized forindividual students so that their strength areas can be tapped. At the end of the day, the idea is to create a skilledworkforce, which is ready to take up responsibilities in any given field. 2.A Global Orientation to the Learning Process: Education, by default, needs to compulsorily have a globalorientation. However, subject to the constraints of the existing educational delivery structure, the same was nota viable proposition always. Thanks to AI, imparting a global perspective to education wouldn’t be too much ofa hassle. The availability of online education would ensure that the repertoire of choices available for a studentis much more than what it currently is. 3.Academic Content Would Become Smart: Virtual educational content in the form of video lectures, smart textbooks, e-books and the likes have practically transformed the educational sector. Gone arethe days when the students had to patiently wait for their desired books in order to get a grasp overtheir chosen subjects. Thanks to AI and the current digital revolution, content of any form and hue is available at the click of a button. In fact, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to note that the advent of AI and digital technologies have democratized the educational delivery process and made it more affordable for people from across the spectrum.

Page 5: Ý Ýªsls.pdpu.ac.in/downloads/mirror-jan-2020.pdfThe session started with a presentation by Dr.Sandhya on “Why economists need to work with data?”. She explained some real economic

4.Administrative Simplification: As teachers and academicians, we all know that administrative hasslessometimes restrict our time to garner new knowledge. Thanks to AI, most of the administrative tasks that theteachers had to do all these while could be done by the smart machines. The usage of digital resources hasalso simplified the process of archiving thereby saving a significant amount of time. When we look at the pointers mentioned above and many more, it becomes more than obvious that AI ishere to stay, at least in the educational sector. The educational community needs to embrace it or becomeredundant in the eventual equation. Have a great read! 22 Jan. 2020: The Economics faculty from the Department of Social Sciences, SLS, organized anexpert session on ‘Use of Data Analytics in Economics’ on 22nd January, 2020 in the campus. Theexpert was Dr Sandhya Krishnan, who is currently working as an Assistant Professor at MeghnadDesai Academy of Economics, Mumbai. The lecture primarily focused on how the contemporary discipline of economics is incomplete withoutthe application of mathematics and statistics in order to understand economic phenomena. Thesession highlighted the significance of data and the application of statistical tools to answer questionsof Economics. The significance of data entails knowing data sources, mining vast amounts of data(big data) and making sense of that data through data visualization tools as well as application ofmathematical and statistical tools. The tools of statistics that are usually applied in Economics are the different types of regressions. The session started with a presentation by Dr.Sandhya on “Why economists need to work with data?”.She explained some real economic situations to make the audience understand the same. Sheexplained the important dynamics in gathering data, identifying the objectives of data collection andthereafter analyse the data. She further interacted with the students to explain how an economicproblem identifies underlying factors that influence an outcome, to what extent can people put up withconstraints, what is the right time to bring about a numerical change for quality assurance, how todemonstrate relationships statistically, and how to test a hypothesis in order to understand cause andeffect relationship among variables. Dr. Sandhya, using live examples, introduced the new approach of mixing qualitative and quantitativedata together and formingBig Data and Machine Learning. Further, she demonstrated on howmachine learning and Big Data can be used to estimate the expenditure pattern among the populationof middle class category in India. The session ended with some useful tips for students: 1. Data collection is the first step towards data analysis.2. A strong statistical background will help analyse the data effectively.3. Data visualization is important to present the result in a comprehensive and simple fashion.4. The advent of big data and machine learning has increased the importance of data and its analysis, not only in the field of Economics, but also beyond.

Let’s learn to adapt. “When the winds of change start blowing, some people build walls, some build wind mills”.
