We have applied for all the requisite visas and greatly look forward to meeting you all as soon as possible. It reminds me of the old Yiddish saying: “A Mensch Tracht, Und Gott Lacht” – “Man Plans, and God Laughs!” a phrase which has become ever more relatable, this past year. We go through life with clear “plans” and expectations of how things will go, but often these plans change in the most unexpected way, at short notice! This idea is central in this week’s פרשׁה. בּני ישׂראלhad left מצרים, crossed the ,ים סוףdefeated עמלק, received the תורהat הר סיני- all seems set for the “happily ever after” scenario of this new nation imminently entering the Promised Land. However, as we all know, things didn’t go according to plan, and we have the tragic episode of the בָ הָ זַ ל הֶ ּ גֵ . What caused the Israelites to fall so dramatically - to veer off the Divine plan of nationhood, with such tragic consequences? How were they able, having witnessed the Sinaitic Revelation, to fall so low just six weeks later? In contemporary terms, this question is, essentially, how does one maintain inspiration without losing momentum? We can all recall times in our own lives of deep spiritual connection; the transcendent moment under the Chupah, the first visit to Israel, or visiting graves of the righteous. But sadly, the natural way of the world is that, unless one acts on inspiration, it fades. On breaking our fast after יום כפורwe genuinely feel ‘this year will be different’, and then the inspiration and motivation vanishes. The מכילתא(Sh.15.2) observes how mere maidservants at the Red Sea witnessed miracles that even יחזקאל בן בוזי, who experienced the most vivid prophecies, did not, and the Gemara in עבודה זרה(4b) asserts that the Jewish people were then totally righteous, incapable of sin - so what changed? Rabbi Dr Akiva Tatz explains the phenomenon thus. In order to redeem the Jewish Nation, G-d appeared and uplifted us miraculously, without any effort on our part – we experienced His majesty and revelation without earning it. We merely stood back, awestruck by the Divine. However, once made conscious of our own potential and higher reality, the price must be paid, the experience must be earned – we must achieve. At that point, when we ourselves start working back up towards the level of inspiration we once attained, it is no longer granted artificially but acquired genuinely. Immediately following מתן תורה, the Jewish people had not yet developed the ability to work on themselves to maintain the inspiration and internalise their experiences. It was still extraneous to them, thus allowing the בָ הָ זַ ל הֶ ּ גֵ episode to occur. But if inspiration inevitably fades, what hope is there of living lives of meaning and achievement? R’ Golker continued from page 1 A resolution of this problem may be found in the Gemara in

which teaches that an unborn child is taught the ,(30b) נדהentire תורה in the womb by a מלאך, who also reveals to it all the mysteries of creation. However, immediately after its birth, the strikes it on the lip, making it forget all the teaching, so מלאךthat it becomes a simple unlearned baby.

The question is obvious- why teach material that will be forgotten? The teachings are not forgotten – they are driven deep into the unconscious. All we need to know is there – we just have to work on ourselves to bring it out. It is fascinating to consider that frequently, when hearing something beautiful and true, one has the sensation not of learning but recognizing it. In Jewish terms, regarding observance, I have met many individuals who started keeping שבת telling me that although their observance is fresh, it already feels natural to them. It is not new, but rediscovered!

Our world is not geared up for such a message – of working on oneself, one’s relationships and career. Looking around, we perceive a generation of instant gratification. Everything is disposable and replaceable, and tasks requiring hard work and perseverance are unpopular. The “Spotify generation”; if you don’t like the music, change it instantly, and even if the items “aint broke” we still “fix it” chuck out the old and replace it with the new. To a certain extent, we have come to devalue things that require hard work and perseverance.

The challenge of that second phase is to remember the first, to remain inspired by that memory and employ it as fuel for constant growth. Maimonides in his introduction נבוכים מורה describes life as a dark night on a stormy plain; we are lost, with no idea where to go. Suddenly there is a flash of lightning and everything is illuminated – the path through the forest is clear. But then, everything falls dark again, and we are seemingly back at square one. But we are not; we can use the memory of that flash for guidance. We all have the same challenge, to keep our inspiration alive, to ensure our own personal תורה never מתן becomes our own personal הזהב ל It is our job to create .עגvibrant communities like Bnai Yeshurun with immense opportunities to feel inspired, to connect with deep Jewish learning and engage in each other, elevating our own Jewish lives. I look forward to meeting your wonderful community soon.

CBY COVID Safety Protocols In our ongoing efforts to provide a safe makom Tefilla and Torah for our community, the CBY Medical has provided the following health and safety guidelines. By working together we hope to ensure that our shul remains safe.

1. Health: No one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 may attend any event at CBY. COVID-19 symptoms are: • Fever or chills • Cough • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Fatigue • Muscle or body aches • New headache • New loss of taste or smell • Sore throat • Congestion or runny nose • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea

2. Masking: Masking is required at all indoor and outdoor minyanim. Masks should cover both nose and mouth. There are no exceptions.

3. Seating Plans: In addition to masking, we continue to urge social distancing, leaving six feet between seats occupied by non-family members. There are blue stickers in the New Main sanctuary which indicate where people should sit to ensure a safe environment. In all other locations chairs are spaced appropriately; please do not move or add seats in these locations. In the tents we have put out chairs in groups of two to allow one chair for sitting and one for tallis/tefillin/chumash etc.

4. Adding Minyanim: Our shul administration, Rabbis, and gabbaim are doing our best to provide additional minyanim based on the increased need. Each minyan should have a captain who will determine if there is a need to add a simultaneous minyan elsewhere to avoid crowding.

5. Ventilation & Duration: Efforts, including consultation with HVAC experts, have been made to ensure proper ventilation of the space. Masking, distancing, and ventilation reduce risk but do not eliminate it. Every individual who chooses to daven inside must be aware of this risk and signs are posted to this effect. We do suggest N95 masks for those individuals at increased risk as they are proven to be safer in most studies.

6. Avoiding Crowding: While in shul, as well as while entering and exiting, congregants should maintain social distance. 7. Quarantine Guidelines: The Medical Committee is continually looking at COVID trends in our area, research related to

vaccination, and CDC guidelines. With that in mind, please see below for the most recent update to our quarantine policies. • Those individuals who have received both doses of a COVID vaccine, beginning 14 days after their second dose, will

no longer need to quarantine due to exposure or travel, as long as they are asymptomatic, for up to 3 months. • Individuals who have previously tested positive for COVID will be exempt from quarantine due to exposure or

travel, as long as they are asymptomatic, for up to 3 months of their positive diagnosis. • CBY will continue to require a 14-day quarantine for individuals following any known COVID exposure who does

not meet the criteria identified in the above points. • Following return from travel outside the immediate area (NY, NJ, CT, DE, PA) CBY will continue to require a 10-

day quarantine for anyone who does not meet the criteria listed above. If you have unique questions related to your personal situation please contact Elysia Stein at [email protected].

• Please note, any individual who is exhibiting symptoms of COVID, regardless if they have been vaccinated or previously tested positive for COVID, should remain home and consult their doctor.

8. COVID at CBY: In the event that a member or non-member tests positive, we will send out a communication to the entire shul with that information. We will not identify the member or non-member by name without their permission but will attempt to report where (at which minyan) and when that person davened at CBY. Each individual in that minyan should then reach out to their doctor to discuss their individual need for quarantine. We request that any person who davens at a CBY minyan (either indoor or outdoor) contact Elysia Stein ([email protected]) in a timely manner in the event that they test positive for COVID.

We are trusting our members and other attendees to follow this practice. If you have any concerns related to a violation of this policy, please speak with the Gabbai of that minyan or please inform the shul office.

Teen Department – A Message from Rabbi Jonathan Schachter The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts

Parashas Ki Sisa begins with the mitzvah of machatzis hashekel, the requirement to collect a half shekel from each Jewish male who is counted as part of a census. Were we to count actual people instead of coins, a plague would befall the nation, as did happen in the times of David

Hamelech (Shmuel II Ch 24). Why should counting people induce a plague? Furthermore, if using coins can counter that, why are we merely giving half a coin? Surely, each individual would have been happy to donate a full shekel! A few pesukim later in the parasha, we are introduced to the ketores, the pleasant smelling incense offered on the mizbe’ach ha’zahav every morning and afternoon. Listed among its ingredients is the chelbana, which surprisingly had a foul smell. Why then was it included among the ketores ingredients? Rashi (Shemos 31:34), citing the Gemara (Kerisus 6b), explains that the Torah is teaching us the importance of inclusion; if we are to include a foul smelling spice in the ketores, then we must also learn to include a rasha who comes to daven with us. A “tzibbur” is only a “tzibbur” if it combines tzadikim, beinonim and resha’im. From the simple reading of this gemara, it seems that the both the chelbanah and the rasha do not contribute to the overall good, but nonetheless it is still important to include them. The Ran (1300’s, Spain), in his derashos (#1 & #9), however believes that while the chelbanah does have a foul smell on its own, when it is mixed with the other ingredients of the ketores, the overall fragrance is enhanced. Had the chelbanah not been included, the ketores would be inferior! Similarly, the rasha on his own might lack merit, but without his presence the tzibbur would be lacking. By way of analogy, not every instrument in the orchestra sounds pleasant on its own. For example, I would not want to listen to someone practicing the tuba by himself. But if the tuba player would miss the performance, the symphony would be incomplete and inferior. When HaShem revealed Himself at Har Sinai, He purposely waited until we were a full nation, since only a full nation could appreciate His gadlus. The Ran compares this to a genius, who had mastered all the areas of wisdom available to humanity, be it science, math, history or literature. When this individual gives a lecture, it would be a waste to have only scientists or only mathematicians in the audience. The teacher would be limited in what can he or she could teach. Instead, the teacher would want a full audience, with all the various specialists, so that as a group, they can benefit from the full range of the teacher’s vast knowledge. Similarly, if HaShem were to offer the Torah to only Avraham or only Moshe, as great as each was, the full glory of Hashem would not be appreciated. As the Ran writes, even the lowest of the nation has some wisdom or ability that even the

most elite lacks. Only a complete nation could appreciate revelation to its fullest, since the collective abilities and wisdom of the nation exceeds that of even the greatest individual. During my years at Yeshiva University, I had the great privilege of learning under Rav Parnes. When he would pose a question to the shiur, he would address us as the “gadol hador.” What does the “gadol hador” think about this Rambam? How would the “gadol hador” answer this question of Tosfos? He explained that a full shiur was bound to have more answers and insights than even the Rebbi! With this understanding, we can return to the counting of the nation through the machatzis hashekel. If we were to be counted as individuals, instead of by coins, the Heavenly court would temporarily focus on each one of us individually. Our flaws would then be exposed and this would result in a plague, chas v’shalom. But if we use coins, and specifically half coins, then we are asking to be looked at as incomplete parts of a larger group. HaShem will then focus on the tzibbur, and its collective merit. “He’ashir lo yarbeh v’ha’dal lo yam’it.” The rich and poor will be judged together as part of a large nation, who collectively has more merit than even the most righteous individual. Then we will truly merit HaShem’s blessings. Barcheinu Avinu kulanu k’echad!!!!

Virtual Youth Wing! Ki Tisa in “Hashtag” Form

• Jewish #chevra over the age of 20 were commanded to give a Machatzit HaShekel as a means of conducting a census, #AloneHalf #TogetherWhole #Adulting. These silver shekalim were later melted down for the sockets of the mishkan, #SupportThatMikdash.

• Next comes the construction of the Kiyor, a copper wash basin which was filled with water for preparatory #BeisBaths (at least for the hands and feet). Then the Torah describes the components of the Shemen HaMishcha, anointing oil, as well as the anointing process of the Keilim, #OilyOyhel. Last week we learned about the Ketoret and its special mizbeach. This week we learn about what goes into the Ketoret HaSamim, #AromaticAspirations. Betzalel, who was in #TheShadowOfGod, was selected to be the chief architect of the mishkan, #GoGetEm! We are reminded to keep Shabbat #MikdashOfTime, it’s a #VeryVeryVeryVerySpecialSign.

• We then hear about the unfortunate episode of the Eigel HaZahav; according to many, this all happened to BEFORE the commandment to build a mishkan #EinMukdamUMiUcharBaTorah. Moshe asked HaShem to forgive the Jews, which He did #SalachtiKidvarecha #13Middot. When Moshe came down and saw the craziness, he dropped the luchot, #noooooo. He then enlisted the Leviim to help put the wicked in their places #MiLaHaShemElai #ZealousZappers.

• After a brief discussion, HaShem promised to lead us, personally, into Eretz Canaan, and also to exclusively rest His shechina upon the Jewish people #Exclusive #BFFL’z. Moshe then constructs the second pair of Luchot, this time, it was #ManMade. HaShem reminds us: no idols, celebrate the Shalosh Regalim, no chametz on Pesach, redeem the bechorim, and keep kosher!

• When Moshe came down from Har Sinai with the second pair of Luchot #YomKippurStyle, beams of light emanating from his face. Dude, you’re #MamishGlowing. People became afraid, so he put on a mask, yet removed it whenever he spoke to God or delivered God’s messages to the people. In other words, Moshe wore a mask #BeforeItWasCool #TrendSetter.

A Mini-Vort From the Szafranski Table to Yours! Many of the meforshim note that the word “ תנו and they shall ,ונgive,” in reference to the donating of the Machatzit HaShekel, is a palindrome, as it can be read the same way backwards or forwards. The Baal HaTurim (30:12) famously teaches that the same way תנו can be read in both directions, when one gives ונtzedaka, the person will ultimately be paid back in full, and won’t lose out on anything.

For decades Bris Avrohom has been hosting Pesach Sedarim for many of the Jewish-Russian families living in Bergen County and surrounding areas and/or providing such families with all that would be needed for them to have meaningful sedarim at home. Unfortunately, because of the COVID situation, it will not be possible for there to be communal sedarim this year. Moreover, especially in light of the situation, we know that there will be many families who may not be able to have a meaningful and complete seder this year without Bris Avrohom’s help. That said, we are once again reaching out to ask for your assistance so that Bris Avrohom will be able to help these families and provide all that ask with everything they will need for sedarim. Bris Avrohom’s efforts have been extremely successful over the years as dozens of families, who may not otherwise have been able, have attended or been provided with everything they need to enjoy meaningful sedarim. The feedback received over the years from Bris Avrohom has been excellent. Many of the people who have been the beneficiaries of these programs have been inspired to participate in other Jewish programs over the course of the year, and some have gone on to lead Torah observant lives. The participation of the Teaneck Jewish Community in once again helping to underwrite the costs associated with this and follow-up programs would be greatly appreciated. Please consider being a sponsor at one of the following levels: - Sponsor one family Seder $54 - Sponsor two family Sedarim $100 - Event Donor $180 - Event Patron $360 - Event Benefactor $500 or more Of course, assistance at any level with this very important project is appreciated. Please make checks payable to Bris Avrohom and send them to Joel Strauss, 611 Grenville Avenue, Teaneck, NJ 07666. May we all be zoche to have a happy and healthy Pesach! For more information please contact Rabbi Kanelsky of Bris Avrohom at [email protected] or 908-289-0770.
