The Herald 25th April 2014 E01 Page 6 NEWS Animal loving friends set about Romanian dog rescue mission THREE animal lovers will host a fundraising event in Farnham next month to help rescue stray dogs threatened by euthanasia in Romania and find them loving new homes in the UK. Rachael, Jennifer Gilbert and Lisa Webster aim to import more than 100 dogs from Romania, after a new Romanian law provides for the killing of captured strays “in the most barbaric and inhumane way” if not adopt- ed within two weeks. Last month Jennifer and Lisa travelled to Romania to rescue as many dogs as possible from a shelter in Fundulea near Bucharest, where the owners had run out of funds and abandoned the dogs to “rot in their own mess”. They bought medicine, treated pressure sores, built outdoor pens, fed the dogs and rescued around 200 dogs from the shelter - giv- ing them a temporary home with a local vet before importing them to the UK. Rachael, who lives in Farnham, said: “We grew to love nearly every single dog in that shelter and when you’re there you think ‘I can’t leave’. We had to choose the ones we knew would make good pets and couldn’t leave them in that hopelessness.” The trio have already obtained passports and vac- cines for 27 of the dogs, and imported them to the UK by van on April 17. However, it costs £200 to transport each dog to England, and the trio are in urgent need of funds having already spent thou- sands of pounds of their own money. Rachael added: "Last week we discovered that the authority for the Supervision and Protection of Animals (ASPA), which manages strays in Bucharest, planned to come and take away 80 dogs we had left behind. “If they do, they will kill them instantly. If there is a kind sponsor who can assist with the building of a new shelter so we can get the remaining dogs to safety then please, please get in touch. We fear for those we were unable to save.” She added the “lovely” vet in Romania has agreed to build a new shelter for the remaining dogs, but a fur- ther £6,600 is needed to do so. Rachael, Jennifer and Lisa have already raised £1,700 towards the new shelter and travel costs through a fundraiser in Cheam, and hope to repeat this on Saturday, May 10, at the Farnham Conservative Club in Downing Street. The fundraising event in Farnham will feature live bands and a raffle with prizes donated by local busi- nesses across the town. They also hope to estab- lish their own charity to sup- port the dogs, and have con- tacted the Charity Commission. “It was be a long process but is worth it,” Rachael continued. “The dogs have gone from hell to hell. It was hor- rific. The smell in the shelter was overpowering. They had no windows, no air. Dogs were just lying there, they had all given up. “We can’t save them all, but we can try.” To enquire about adopt- ing or sponsoring a Romanian dog, or for more information about their pro- ject, contact Rachael Welch by emailing equestrian [email protected] Care home scoops top award Suffering dogs in Romania BUPA’S Waverley Grange Residential and Nursing Home in Farnham has been named ‘Best Care Home’ at the 2014 Healthcare Design Awards. Now in their 14th year, the Healthcare Design Awards recognise the best properties in the care sector and how their design helps the wellbeing and quality of life for those living there. Karen Smith, home man- ager at Waverley Grange picked up the award at a prestigious awards ceremo- ny at The Lancaster Hotel in London earlier this month. Waverley Grange scooped the Best Care Home Award after it was recognised for its person- centered environment. The home’s spacious living areas, its use of natural night and green credentials all impressed the judging panel, alongside the home’s architectural design which blends in with neighbouring buildings. Commenting on the home’s triumph, Karen Smith said: “I’m absolutely thrilled Waverley Grange has been named Best Care Home. “Everyone living and working at Waverley Grange is extremely proud that our home has been recognised as a special place to live.” The award follows Bupa’s £5.5 million invest- ment into building the new home which opened in June 2013. The 52 bed en- suite home offers specialist residential and nursing facilities for residents in the Farnham area. Its state-of-the-art facili- ties include a cinema, a cafe leading onto the home’s gardens, hair salon, library, an outside play area for children and an activity suite for residents. Jon Chapman, chairman of the judging panel at Pinders, said: “The judges were impressed with the way Waverley Grange offers familiar, domestic architectural styling exter- nally and a light, spacious internal environment. “There has been great attention to detail through- out and long term environ- mental considerations have been employed without compromising resident comfort.” Karen Smith, home manager at Waverley Grange (third from right) receives the award from Laura Wright, a renowned classical music artist. ANDREW Marshman, a type one diabetic from Farnham, completed the London Marathon for a sec- ond time in support of visually impaired children. The father of three was diagnosed with diabetes as a teenager, but overcame his illness to run his first marathon in 2012 followed by the Brighton Marathon last year. He has raised thousands of pounds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) after two of his three children, who also have diabetes, benefited from the charity’s research. But after a chance encounter with a group of visually impaired children at Disneyland, Andrew decided to repeat the London Marathon this year in aid of Visually Impaired Children Taking Action. He completed the marathon in three hours and 42 minutes and has already raised more than £1,000 towards his target of £1,500. Andrew said: “I was hoping to beat three hours and 40 minutes, but it was warmer and sunnier than I had hoped so overall my time wasn’t too bad. “I had a decent first half and was with the three hour, 30 minutes pacer until well after half way. But by 18 minutes I was really struggling with dehydration and wasn’t feeling good. “There’s always next year and I am proud to have raised a significant amount for charity in the process.” To support Andrew, visit his online fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiv ing.com/AndrewMarshman Andrew Marshman with daughter Ella and son Nathaniel. Another marathon effort for visually impaired kids GOOD neighbour scheme Care Farnham has made an urgent appeal for vol- unteer drivers to help local people get to medical appointments. Care Farnham is a reg- istered charity helping iso- lated and often elderly people who cannot get out and about on their own. It was established in 1986 to provide good neighbourly help to those in need by virtue of frailty, old age and ill health. Now, more than 90 per cent of its work involves driving people to doctor, hospital, dentist and other medical appointments. Care Farnham receives nine to 10 transport requests a day, and the demand on its services is increasing year on year. The charity has around 120 volunteers on its books, but is struggling to cope and has appealed for new volunteers to spare just a couple of hours a week. Jon Curtis, Care Farnham publicity officer, said: “We have always relied on word of mouth to find new volunteers, but we have really struggled in recent years. “As our volunteers get older, many stop driving themselves and at the moment we don’t have the people coming forward to replace them. “Most of our volunteers are retired, but they don’t have to be and we are very flexible. Even if people can only help one day a month, that is fine. “We just need to increase our database of volunteers so that we have a greater pool of people we can ring to see who is available.” Care Farnham is fund- ed entirely by voluntary donations from its clients, and drivers may claim a mileage allowance from the charity. The charity also requires more duty offi- cers who can, working from their own homes, record incoming requests and find a suitable volun- teer. Jill Hargreaves, the lead councillor for tourism and events, said: “Last year, more than 6,000 people were estimated to have attended and enjoyed the Music in the Meadow con- certs. This year, we are delighted to welcome Savills estate agents as our main sponsor of the Music in the Meadow pro- gramme.” There are still one or two opportunities left for busi- nesses that wish to sponsor a single concert. Mrs Hargreaves explained: “The concerts are a great way for busi- nesses to raise their profile or to mark a special occa- sion such as an anniversary or birthday.” Including Picnic in the Park, a total of 15 concerts will be held over the sum- mer.
