Instructing with demonstrating bodily interaction:Examples from coaching of Jiu-jitsu techniques

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate how the instructor instructs
Jiu-jitsu techniques with demonstrating bodily interactionwith a partner. The instructor cleverly embeds, in hisutterances and gestures to students, several cues to thepartner, who has not been informed, in advance, ofhow to act, thereby effectively giving the demonstrationwithout disrupting the description. We discuss how thiskind of multiplicity of interaction is related to open-communication.Keywords — instruction, demonstration, bod-ily interaction, multiplicity of interaction, open-communication
