Stop #1

KEG HerefordsKen & Marilyn Stephens

39753 906th Road, Valentine, NE 69201Ken: 402-376-4664

The Ranch is located 5 1/2 miles north of Valentine on US #83, then 2 1/2 miles east on 906th Road, turn north to go up driveway.

The foundation for the KEG Hereford Ranch began in 1965 when Ken purchased BOW MAUDIE REGULATOR for $250. We will celebrate fifty years of having Herefords next year. The focus here is to provide our customers with the genetics to produce cattle that will thrive under tough conditions and still produce steers that will excel in the feedlot. Our range and feed management insure that the cows be efficient grass and hay converters. In a normal year we feed no supplements other than salt and mineral. In dry years we feed only enough supplement to keep the cows healthy. We test this herd every way we can think of. We take birth, weaning and yearling weights. We ultrasound and DNA test. We weigh each cow every fall. Our bulls go to Olsen Ranches each year to collect feed efficiency data and calculate Residual Feed Intake scores. We have twenty years of actual feedlot data on entire sire groups. We also have this data on steers from a number of our customers. About every three years we select a bull from our offering with the poor-est performance numbers and breed him to about twenty-five of our low end commercial cows. All of his resulting steers are then sent to a feedlot trial. So far only one of those bulls has produced steers below the test average. To date we have put 17 bulls through various reference sire tests. They have all been, in our opinion, acceptable. Thank you for stopping by.

Nolles Cattle Co.Mike, Trudy & Katie Nolles

86732 454 Ave., Bassett, NE 68714 Mike: 402-244-5473

Ranch is located 8 miles south of Bassett on Hwy 183, east 10 miles on paved road. At ranch sign go 1 mile south.

Nolles Cattle Company was started in 1953 by Mike’s parents Bert and Irene. Today the ranch and corporation are owned by Mike, Trudy and Katie. Katie is the 6th generation to live in Rock county and the 5th gen-eration on both sides to raise purebred Herefords. The ranch has been in the family for 103 years. Mike’s parents purchased the ranch from Bert’s grandmother in 1953.

Mike and Trudy were both active in the Nebraska and American Junior Hereford Associations. Mike has shown cattle on the national level since 1978. Today Katie carries on the tradition by being involved in those same junior associations and currently serves as the Nebraska Hereford Queen.

The ranch has raised and shown national champion bulls and females along with prior Register of Carcass Merit sires. The purebred cow-herd today consists of approximately 10 donor cows and the calf crop is predominantly ET calves. The cow herd consists of daughters of Lansing, Bailout, Harland, Midas, Davidson and Outcross. These cattle and their progeny will be on display along with bulls that will be in the pen bull show at the National Western this coming January.

Cattle are sold in production sales and private treaty year around.

Stewart Hereford RanchRoy & June Stewart

Jay, Kaye, Rachel & Jayden Stewart45717 875th Road, Newport, NE 68759

Jay 402-244-5457

Welcome to the Stewart Hereford Ranch. Located near the headwaters of the Elkhorn River, this ranch consists of around 13,000 acres. It includes sub-irrigated meadows and 25 to 30 miles south of here are our summer sandhill pastures. The headquarters boasts 23 artesian flowing wells for year round 54 degree water leaving only 8 windmills and 2 solar powered wells around the home place.

Herefords have been successfully used in the family since 1898. The closed cowherd today consists of approximately 300 fall calving heifers/cows and 900 spring calving heifers/cows with all of them being commercial cows. The spring herd consists of 2/3 Herefords and 1/3 Hereford x Angus and Hereford x Red Angus. Currently we are breeding about 550-600 of our females each spring by A.I. to calve in February and March. Presently cows in our herd are sired by Oxley Mark Domino 8020, HH Advance 7676, Jet Domino L617, Gerber Watchfire 117F, CL and HH Advance 063K, UPS Domino 3027, SHF Rib Eye M326 R117, SHF Progress P20, and Schu-Lar Profecient N093. New sires being used this year are MCR BlueStem 977 and THR Thor 4029. The rest of the breeding is done by home raised Her-eford bulls and Angus bulls either home raised or purchased.

Private treaty sales have been used for several years, which have been most-ly to repeat customers. High accuracy EPD’s from proven sires through A.I. have given us a very predictable female base with excellent disposition and uniformity. We use moderate traits with functional females EPD’s that match our environment and management.

Some bred heifers and some Hereford bulls will be on display. We hope you enjoy your visit and you are always welcome to come back and visit again.

From Nolles’s go 2 miles East on the blacktop road, then turn North at the Y intersection onto gravel. Go 8 miles North. Ranch is on the east side of the road.

From Stewart’s, go north on gravel to the blacktop Highway 20, Turn West to Bassett for 9 miles, turn North on Hwy 7, go 26 miles to Springview, turn North on Hwy 183. Ranch is 12 miles north of Springview, 1 mile west, 1 mile north and 1/2 mile west.

History of the Gierau Ranch goes back a long way’s. Rod’s Grandfather homesteaded here in Keya Paha County in 1884, one of the early home-steads of Keya Paha County. Shorthorns were the first breed of cattle that roamed the pastures of the Gierau Ranch. When the turn of the century came, Hereford Breed became the primary herd and has continued on through the next cen-tury turn. The GU Brand was registered around 1900 and remains in the Gierau Name. Down through the years, several partnerships have been formed within the Gierau Families. In the late 1970’s, Rod, wife Nila and son Brett started their Partnership and are currently maintaining the ranch.

From Gierau’s go 2 miles North, 4 miles West, 1 mile North, 1 mile West, 1 mile North, 11 miles West, 9 miles North, Turn east into the ranch.

Ollerich Bros. Herefords is owned by Jerome and James Ollerich. The herd started as a 4-H project in 1969. Some of the foundation females were purchased from Bones’, Flatten’s, Leddy’s, Weise’s, Sellman’s and the Upstream Ranch. BR Blanchard 049 and OBH Grand Slam were two bulls that had the most influence in the early development of our herd. Gerber Leland 069 is the bull that has had the biggest influence on our herd in the past several years.

In 1978, we bought the ranch near Clearfield, South Dakota and moved the op-eration here from Sioux Falls where we grew up. The ranch has all native grass pastures. We have enough farm ground to raise all of the feed for our cattle, in a normal year. We raise corn, oats, alfalfa, rye and Sudan grass. Our bulls are sold private treaty. We also have females for sale most of the time. We have sold cattle into 10 states and three foreign countries. James also drives truck, with our brother Jerry. They haul livestock most of the time and go most anywhere in the U.S. If you have any trucking needs, give them a call.

On our tour stop, we will have our cow herd on display, with a pen of spring calving cows and a pen of fall caving cows. The herdbull displayed with the cows is Pyra-mid Thor 22X, a son of THR Thor 4029, he was the top selling bull on the Mark & Nate Fredrickson bull sale in 2011. The calves on the cows are sired by Thor 4029, Thor 22X, UPS Domino 3027, TH Victor 719T and MSU TCF Revolution 4R. All of the calves will have a sire code on the top of their ear tags: “Thor” is Thor 4029, “3027” is UPS Domino 3027, “719T” is the TH Victor 719T, “22X” is the Pyramid Thor 22X and “REV” is Revolution 4R.

Also on display will be a pen of bulls from the 2013 fall calf crop and a few spring coming two year olds. There will be a pen of replacement heifers that are spring yearlings and fall calves also. Both bulls and heifers will be sired by the bulls listed above.

We want to thank everyone that has taken time to go on the tour. We hope you enjoy the traveling, visiting with other cattlemen and looking at all of the cattle. We invite you to come back to our ranch anytime to look at the cattle.

Adams Bros. & Co. was established in 1896 in Odebolt, Iowa and Wahpe-ton, ND, by William P. Adams for his sons Robert B. and John Q. Adams. In 1946 Registered Herefords were introduced by William P. Adams II, grandson of the founder, who in 1963 moved the operation to its present location in Kilgore, Nebraska. Mr. Adams purchased the ranch from the St. Francis Mission which was always known as the Mission Ranch. The current brand F over reverse lazy S was the Mission Ranch brand which is currently used on the ranch cattle. In 1973 ABC was sold by W.P. Adams to his son-in-law William M.W. Sharp who continues raising Registered Herefords.

In the modern era of the ranch under the management of Roger Che-noweth since 1977, we continue to raise Purebred Hereford cattle. Prior to the range fire in October 2012, our cow herd consisted of 320 Hereford cows of which 2/3 of the cows were bred to Red Angus bulls for F1 re-placement females and feeder steers. The remaining 1/3 of the cows were bred to Hereford bulls for replacement females to maintain the Hereford base. We are concentrating on rebuilding the herd through AI to rebuild our Hereford base females.

Our cow herd is Achiever, 8020, Mark Donald and Line One. Herd Bulls are ABC Red Advance 0019, C&S 3027 Advance Dom 0003 ET, ABC 3027 Bando Domino 2001 and C&S 9075 Advance 2039. Welcome to the Logterman Ranch! We hope you enjoy your time. We calve the first calf heifers in March and the mature cows from the middle of April though May. Our management and breeding philoso-phy mimmicks our commercial rancher neighbors and customers – no creep feed, winter range as long as possible, and attention to convenience traits like good udders, moderate birth weight, vigor at birth and disposi-tion. Sandhills Cattle Assc.Ronna Morse, Manager

130 South Hall Street - PO Box 786, Valentine, NE 69201Ronna: 402-376-2310

From Logterman’s go south on the blacktop to Kilgore, and then east on Hwy 20 to Valentine. Return to the Niobrara Lodge for the Sandhills Cattle Associa-tion Stop.

The Sandhills are 19,300 square miles of rolling, grass-covered hills that stretch across Nebraska and South Dakota and sit atop the Ogallala aqui-fer, one of the largest underground water sources in the United States. This location, along with an abundance of water and over 700 species of grasses, makes the Sandhills a prime grazing area for cattle.

The area is often called “God’s Own Cow Country.” Cattle ranching is the lifeblood of this region and the Sandhills ranchers take their jobs seri-ously. They strive to produce better cattle that will be profitable for both the producer and feeder, yet cost justifiable to the packer and provide safe, nutritious and great tasting beef for the consumer.

The Sandhills Cattle Association was organized in the late 1930’s with the purpose of bringing together cattle feeders from what was then re-ferred to as the “Corn Belt” and ranchers raising cattle in the Sandhills. The Association was to assist with the purchase and sale of Sandhills cattle and to promote a spirit of cooperation friendship and mutual under-standing between producers and feeders.

Today the Sandhills Cattle Association continues to promote the cattle and resources of the Sandhills through education, marketing, commu-nications and unique member services. The Association hosts an annual membership meeting and convention on the Thursday before Memorial Day in May, a ranch tour in late January open to any interested individu-als at no cost and conducts a feedlot carcass contest open to members each year. In addition the office provides industry information relevant to its membership through numerous publications, lists and surveys.

Hoffman RanchDenny & Dixie Hoffman, Jason & Kaycee Hoffman39575 Antelope Valley Road, Thedford, NE 69166

Denny: 530-604-5096

From the Niobrara Lodge, head east 4.5 miles on Hwy 20, turn south on Hwy 83 for 50 miles. Turn back to the west at West Antelope Valley Road, go up the long lane to the barn.

Hoffman Herefords started in Denny’s childhood. Denny was fortunate enough to work at a couple very successful programs over the years. Denny and Dixie started Hoffman Ranch, that is owned with Jason, Kay-cee and their kids; Haxton, Kennedy and a baby girl that is on the way.

Hoffman ranch has had great success in the show ring, however their priorities have always been selling range bulls. The cow herd is based off of very fault free, low maintenance cows that have excellent udder quality.

The Hoffman Ranch was relocated to the Sandhills of Nebraska to be more centrally located and to be based out of the heart of cow country. Hoffman Ranch sells around 200 bulls and 100 females annually. This year Hoffman Ranch registered approximately 300 Hereford calves.

They feel very fortunate to be living in the Sandhills of Nebraska and are excited about the future of their business. A lot of their bloodlines have a Line 1 base and they have also owned and used several polled bulls.
