Carleton House School is divided into three Key Stages, but our approach and philosophy is holistic throughout the school. Our focus is child-centred, with small class sizes ensuring that we are able to give every child the attention and support they need to realise their educational and personal potential.

The school has three stages, starting with the Early Years Foundation Stage comprising:

• Nursery (age 3-4) • Reception (age 4-5)

Our Key Stage One comprises of two classes (Year 1 and Year 2) catering for children aged four to seven.

Children progress to Key Stage Two, which has four classes (Years 3-6) for seven to eleven age range.

Small class sizes with a maximum of 23 pupils mean pupils benefit from more individual attention - especially important when preparing for entrance exams for secondary school.

Each year our older pupils are given the opportunity to enter the ESB “English Speaking Board” exam. The children are carefully prepared by expert teachers to develop their public speaking skills; as they prepare to speak about a topic of personal interest, read from a favourite novel and recite a poem by heart. These are skills which will stay with them beyond their years with us at Carleton.

At Carleton House we believe in helping children discover and achieve their full potential. This means a well-rounded curriculum including maths, science, english, languages, sports, music and performing arts as well as many extra curricular and outside of the classroom activities.

Carleton House offers the full statutory primary curriculum. Pupils are prepared for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 SATs tests.

Pupils’ attainments at the end of both of these Key Stages is consistently well above the expected level of attainment nationally.

Our pupils are encouraged to shine both inside the classroom and out, with opportunities to take part in many competitions and events which aim to develop our pupils into confident, well rounded young people, ready to make the most of the opportunities presented to them.

Year 4 children spend a weekend at Manor Adventure Centre, in Shropshire, where they have the opportunity to be introduced to archery, orienteering, a mini-caving system and various adventure activities.

Year 5 pupils spend a weekend on a Manor Adventure residential course in Lockerbie, aimed at covering as wide a range of activities as possible, giving the children new and varied experiences, in order to help build their confidence. self-esteem and independence.

In Year 6 the children enjoy a week in Manor Adventure in France. They enjoy experiencing the cultural differences of a French lifestyle whilst enjoying outdoor sports such as kayaking and team building activities.

As part of our Catholic School ethos and to develop children’s moral and social perspective, we give a high priority to working with charities and supporting community projects and initiatives.

Sport helps children to remain healthy, develop leadership skills and understand the value of teamwork and co-operation. All our children take part in physical education lessons and Key Stage 2 have swimming lessons under the supervision of fully qualified swimming teachers and coaches.

We believe in developing a competitive sporting spirit with an emphasis on participation. A wide variety of games are played in the school and at inter-school level including football, cricket, netball, rounders, swimming, athletics and cross-country.

Students are also given the opportunity to try sports such as fencing, cycling, golf, tag rugby, basketball, Judo and high fives netball.

We are lucky enough to have access to an excellent range of neighbouring facilities, including Volair pool and Wavertree athletics track.

The nearby Calderstones Park is also used for cross country training and football sessions.

We believe in providing opportunities for all pupils to participate whilst developing a

competitive sporting spirit with a wide variety of games and activities
